<strong>Report</strong> on NPCIL, Kakrapar Gujarat Site’s
participation in “Adivasi Mahotsava” at Ukai, Gujarat
Gujarat Rajya 20 th Adijati Mahotsava was held in Ukai Town of Gujarat
from 18 th Feb, 2012 to 20 th Feb, 2012 as part of Gujarat Government initiative to
promote Adivasi culture and traditions and bring adivasi’s into mainstream of
development. Adivasi’s from different parts of India, namely, Gujarat, Maharastra,
Rajasthan and Goa attended the Mahotsava. Collector, Tapi District Proposed that
KAPS should support this Mahotsav by giving Momento to the participants(about 1000
no.). It was decided to support the mahotsav and install an exhibition of KAPS in the
Mahotsav, Collector consented for the same. Ukai is a town in Surat district at a
distance of about 30 KMs from KAPS. Industries like Thermal & Hydel power plants
and a paper mill are located at Ukai.
NPCIL, Kakrapar Gujarat Site has utilized this opportunity to increase
the awareness and clear the misconceptions on nuclear power among the public by
addressing a wide array of people including residents of Ukai. An Exhibition stall with
the display items viz. Reactor Building model, Animated Flow diagram of the standard
PHWR, a dummy fuel bundle, banners conveying the message that “Nuclear Power is
a clean & green power” & “Nuclear Power fuelling the future” was put up at the
Mahotsava venue. A TV Monitor (46” size) and LAPTOP were used for running the
cartoon film. Working of the nuclear power plant, its environmentally benign nature,
the safety features, operating safety record and the need for nuclear power for the
growth of the country were explained to the public who visited the stall.
The Adivasi Mahotsava was inaugurated by Honourable Minister of
State for Panchayat, Gram Gruha Nirman and Nagarik Apoort, Government of Gujarat,
Shri Narottam Patel. Other dignitaries present in the function were Honourable
Minister of State for Co-operative, sports, youth and cultural affairs, Government of

Gujarat, Shri Ishwar Bhai Patel, Chairman, ST Nigam, Gujarat, Shri Kanti Bhai Gamit,
Parliamentary Secretary, Adijati Vikas, Government of Gujarat, Sh Harsad bhai
Basava. Site Director, Kakrapar Gujarat Site, Shri L K Jain was one of the
distinguished guests who participated in the inaugural function.
The Honourable minister Shri Narottam Patel, along with state officials
including the Tapi district collector Shri. R.J. Patel and DDO, Ms. Shalini Agrawal
visited NPCIL exhibition. They were received by Site Director, Kakrapar Site, Shri L K
Jain. Chief Superintendent, KAPS, Sh P R Bansal, Maintenance Superintendent, Sh
M P Hansora, Training Superintendent, Sh D Rajendran, AGM (HR), Smt. Sujaya
Kujur, Senior Training Officer, Sh C Rajani Kumar were also present on the occasion.
Shri Narottam Patel was keen to know about operational aspects of Nuclear power
plant including future NPCIL plans, especially in the state of Gujarat.
The exhibition was visited by people from all walks of life including
school children, villagers, state officials, public sector (Ukai Thermal and Ukai Hydel)
and Private sector (J K Paper Mills) employees. Cartoon film - Mansukh, allaying the
fears about nuclear energy was a big draw amongst the students and the youngsters.
More than 2000 persons visited NPCIL display stall. Booklets in Gujarati language
named “Ek Hato Mansukh” Part-I & “Kakrapar Atomic Power Station” (brief about
nuclear energy & plant operation) were distributed to the public who visited the
exhibition stall. People were showing keen interest to learn about nuclear power
operation and appreciative of the message that nuclear power is a clean & green
power and the increasing nuclear power generation is vital for India’s growth.
The whole public awareness programme was co-ordinated by Shri D
Rajendran, Training Superintendent, KAPS. S/Shri C Rajani Kumar, R K Dubey, J B
Soni, Y J Prajapati, J S Wanker, Shailesh Nikam and Naveen participated as
volunteers in public awareness programme. S/Shri Itesh Nathubhai Gamit, H D Rana
from HR group have coordinated with the state authorities for conducting the
programme.
Closing ceremony of the Mahotsava was presided over by Honourable
Minister of State for Tribal development, forest and environment, Government of
Gujarat, Shri Mangu Bhai Patel. Honourable Minister of State for Road transport,
