Long-term energy restriction — the downside<br />

Long-term energy restriction can lead to reductions <strong>in</strong> metabolic rate, a disturbed<br />

menstrual cycle and decreased testosterone levels. These outcomes can lead to<br />

decreases <strong>in</strong> strength/power and an impairment of bone health. It is important to have<br />

close guidance from a sports dietitian to ensure that key nutrients are be<strong>in</strong>g provided<br />

(especially iron and calcium) and to have regular ways to assess that long-term health<br />

and performance are be<strong>in</strong>g ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

A note on <strong>in</strong>jury and off-season<br />

The <strong>in</strong>jured or taper<strong>in</strong>g athlete has reduced energy requirements compared<br />

to their needs dur<strong>in</strong>g regular tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Some athletes cont<strong>in</strong>ue to eat the same<br />

amount of energy despite a reduction <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, lead<strong>in</strong>g to weight ga<strong>in</strong>. The<br />

guidance of a sports dietitian can help athletes adjust their energy <strong>in</strong>take to<br />

their specific needs.<br />
