• Snack — Suitable for athletes with high-energy requirements (for example, athletes<br />

undertak<strong>in</strong>g a heavy tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g load, adolescent athletes undergo<strong>in</strong>g a period of<br />

growth, or strength or power athletes tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>crease muscle mass). Also a<br />

convenient, portable snack for athletes with a busy lifestyle.<br />

• Pre-exercise — Provides a source of prote<strong>in</strong> and carbohydrate prior to weight<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g workouts. Pre-exercise <strong>in</strong>take of these nutrients may be important to<br />

promote recovery and adaptation to the session.<br />

• Post-exercise — Compact, portable source of prote<strong>in</strong>, carbohydrate, and other<br />

nutrients for post-exercise recovery. Post-exercise use is targeted to recovery after<br />

resistance tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g workouts and other exercise requir<strong>in</strong>g optimal prote<strong>in</strong> synthesis.<br />

Ideal for use when appetite is suppressed follow<strong>in</strong>g exercise or access to food is<br />

Considerations<br />

Food sources should always be considered as the first option for meals and snacks.<br />

Overuse may lead to <strong>in</strong>appropriate replacement of whole foods. Additional source of<br />

carbohydrate may be needed for post-exercise situations where refuell<strong>in</strong>g is important.<br />

Higher energy content may not be suitable for all athletes.<br />
