Application to sport<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g Exercise / 28<br />
Guidel<strong>in</strong>es for endurance sports (for example, long-distance runn<strong>in</strong>g, cycl<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
triathlon)<br />
Strategies for refuell<strong>in</strong>g and rehydration dur<strong>in</strong>g these sports need to be <strong>in</strong>dividualised<br />
for each event and each athlete. Assessment of likely sweat losses and the general<br />
guidel<strong>in</strong>es for carbohydrate <strong>in</strong>take dur<strong>in</strong>g prolonged exercise provide a start<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t<br />
for experimentation. Supplies may be provided at aid stations or may need to be<br />
carried by the athlete.<br />
Examples of how to meet both carbohydrate and fluid requirements per hour<br />
of moderate <strong>in</strong>tensity exercise last<strong>in</strong>g longer than 60 m<strong>in</strong>utes.<br />
750ml sports dr<strong>in</strong>k (CHO ~ 50g)<br />
400ml sports dr<strong>in</strong>k, 400ml water, and 1 PowerBar PowerGel (CHO ~ 50g)<br />

Longer events, such as Ironman triathlon or multi-discipl<strong>in</strong>e adventure races, may allow for the<br />
<strong>in</strong>clusion of a greater variety of food options such as a sandwich (made with vegemite, honey<br />
or jam), <strong>in</strong>stant soup, PowerBar Prote<strong>in</strong>Plus dr<strong>in</strong>k or degassed soft dr<strong>in</strong>k.<br />
Team sports (for example, netball, AFL, soccer, basketball, waterpolo)<br />
Opportunities to dr<strong>in</strong>k are usually limited to breaks <strong>in</strong> play and at half or quarter time.<br />
Each person should have their own dr<strong>in</strong>k bottle and monitor their weight before and<br />
after games (and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g) to get an understand<strong>in</strong>g of their fluid losses. <strong>Sports</strong> dr<strong>in</strong>ks<br />
provide a convenient means to meet fluid and carbohydrate needs simultaneously<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g exercise. Some team sport athletes, particularly those dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the game, may benefit from consum<strong>in</strong>g a PowerBar PowerGel at half-time as an easily<br />
