A finance committee, whose duty shall be to adjust as far as neces sary the financial concerns of the Grand Lodge up to the close of the last session. 3rd. A General Grand Lodge Committee. 4th. A Committee on Charity. 5th. A Committee on Returns of Chartered Lodges having failed to re port at the regular time. nth. A Committee on Grievances; or such other committee or commit tees as the wisdom of this body may devise. Since I arrived in this city the resignation of Bro. Pickett, as Rt. W. Grand Secretary, was received by me, consequently that office is now va cant, and an immediate election to fill the vacancy is recommended. A very fraternal communication was received by me from the M. W. Grand Lodge of Virginia, inviting the officers and members of the Grand Lodge of Illinois, to participate with them in the pleasing duty of Masonic- ally laying a corner stone of a monument to be erected in the City of Rich mond, to the memory of our illustrious Bro. George Washington. The invitation was received too late to permit me either notifying you or attending myself. 1 will not interfere with your time in addressing you at this communica tion upon matters not pertinent to the intentions of this meeting. At the regular communication I will take the liberty of presenting many proposi tions which in my opinion will be of importance to the fraternity. In conclusion I will congratulate you on the unprecedented growth of the fraternity within this jurisdiction. New lodges are springing up vigor ously and securely in almost every village and town of any size throughout the length and breadth of the State. General harmony prevails, and from the reports 1 have had the pleasure to receive, I am induced to believe that the subordinates are in a most healthy and prosperous condition. More than ordinary caution is avowedly exercised by the lodges in the reception of members -consequently our altars are, measurably, sacred from the of ferings of the unworthy, and our sanctuaries unj>olhited by the presence of the mercenary ami the profligate. Which address on motion was referred to a special committee consisting of Bros. Warren, Bray man and Snyder. Bro. Warren submitted the following preamble and resolutions, which
606 were unanimously adopted, and Bros. Warren, Lavely and Keys appointed a committee to correspond with the widow and relations of our deceased brother, and to transmit to them copies of the resolutions: It is with feelings of the deepest sorrow, that we have learned that an other link has been broken in the chain of fraternal affections, and another domestic altar destroyed by that great leveller of human distinctions, death. Our esteemed Bro. H. S. Cooly, Past Grand Orator, is no more. To him the r,avel has sounded in the East, and to his work has been applied the unerr ing square of the Grand Overseer above, and we doubt not, that it has been pronounced such work as was directed to be received, and such as was en titled to wages. In the death of Bro. Cooly, society has lost one of its brightest orna ments, the State an able officer, the needy and distressed one whose fondest wish was to contribute to their wants, to relieve their necessities and com- misserate their sorrows. But in the Masonic body and at the domestic altar a void has been made which can only be filled by the reflection that "what is our loss is his gain." Resolved, That this Grand Lodge tender to the afflicted widow and rel ations of our deceased brother, our deepest sympathy. Resolved, That the members of this Grand Lodge will wear the usual badge of mourning for the space ot thirty days. Resolved, That Bros. , be a committee to correspond with the widow and relations of our deceased brother, and transmit to them copies of these resolutions. Bro. Warren from the special committee, to which was referred the ad dress of the Most Worshipful Grand Master, begs leave to recommend: The appointment by the Most Worshipful Grand Master, of the follow ing committees as suggested by him: ist.
