news Royal Rousseau KIS – The Little Colt That Could the ChampiOn Of the inaugural Breeders Challenge Sweepstakes held by Scott and Susanne Hassler of Hassler Dressage, Chesapeake City, Md., was Royal Rousseau KIS (Rousseau-Royal Princess OBX/Royal Prince). “Roy” was bred by Wendy and Marty Costello of Kent Island Sporthorses, Stevensville, Md., and is now owned by Hassler Dressage. The Breeders Challenge Sweepstakes is a new breeders’ contest open to all participating stallions’ offspring in the Hassler Dressage program, beginning with foals born in 2011. Through this program Hassler Dressage intends to highlight quality foals and award breeders with prizes and recognition. All entrants were scored blindly – no pedigree, owner information, gender of foal, or other details were given to the judges. Only a video and photographs submitted by the foal’s owners were presented to the judges. Foals were judged on five categories: walk, trot, canter, conformation and overall impression. Judges included National Young Dressage Horse Coach Scott Hassler, internationally respected breeding expert Jacques Verkerk of Holland and World Breeding Championship for Young Horses 8 T HE AMERICAN HANOVERIAN breeder and top stallion producer Ingo Pape of Germany. Each judge submitted their scores independently. Once all scores were tallied, Hassler Dressage kept the results quiet until they made an announcement at Dressage at Devon. Wendy and Marty were awarded $5,000 as well as a $100 breeding credit for any stallion in the Hassler Dressage program. The couple was also invited to Riveredge for a celebration and will receive wide recognition through advertising and other publications. Roy’s dam, Royal Princess OBX (Royal Prince-Brimming/Banter), bred by Don and Dee Kapper of Outer Banks Farm, Ohio, gained Elite Mare status after foaling this colt. Benidetto Foal Wins at First German Foal Show the first qualifier fOr the 2012 German Foal Championships took place at Hannes Baumgart’s stable Schwartze Hof in Verden, Ger., on May 30, 2012. The winner in the filly division was Jochen Dittmer’s 20-day old filly by Benidetto out of a Don Cavallo dam. The 2004 Hanoverian stallion, Benidetto, is owned by Linda Woltz of Walnut Farm, Ohio, and was bred by Dittmer. n COURTESY WENDY COSTELLO
The Dressage Foundation Awards Grant from Elysium Farm Fund for U.S. Breeder Excellence the dressage fOundatiOn is pleased to announce that the inaugural recipient of its Elysium Farm Fund for U.S. Breeder Excellence grant is Laurie Weiser, DVM, owner of Blume Farm Hanoverians, N.C. The Elysium Farm Fund for U.S. Breeder Excellence, established at The Dressage Foundation in 2011 by Abbey Henderson, provides financial assistance to breeders to pursue educational opportunities related to breeding that will advance their careers, promote sound breeding practices and further enhance the quality of U.S.-bred dressage horses. Laurie was awarded $2,860 to attend the Hannoveraner Verband Breeder’s Course in Verden, Germany. Her goal in attending the course is to further her knowledge and education to improve upon her small breeding program. “I desire to one day be able to ‘think’ like successful breeders such as Axel Wendeler or Harli Seifert… to think in generations, to have a solid understanding of the history of bloodlines and to critically assess a mare and stallion pairing. The educational courses I have attended, and additional courses in the future, are geared towards developing and improving these skills,” said Laurie. Blume Farm Hanoverians, located in Pittsboro, N.C., began in 2000 when Laurie purchased her foundation mare, Elite Mare Dorfblume. Laurie’s long-term goal with her program is to consistently produce dressage horses that have the bloodlines, gaits, and conformation suitable for competitive adult amateur riders. Applications will again be received in 2013, with a due date of May 1st. Further information about the Elysium Farm Fund for U.S. Breeder Excellence is available at The Dressage Foundation website, www.dressagefoundation.org or call (402) 434-8585. n Fritz Floto (1924-2012) At the age of 88 years Fritz Floto passed away on June 19, 2012 at his farm near Fergus, Ontario. “The word Hanoverian and the name Fritz Floto are synonymous in North America,” well described this old school horseman in the Canadian magazine Horse Sport in September, 1992. Fritz Floto was the pioneer of Hanoverian breeding in Canada and had much influence on the development of the Hanoverian breed in the U.S. For his merits he was awarded the Golden Badge of Honour of the Hannoveraner Verband in 1980. The Chamber of Agriculture Hannover awarded him with a Golden Medal in recognition of his achievements in building up and promoting the Hanoverian breed in North America, and from the German Equestrian Federation he received the Gustav Rau Plaque. Mr. Floto was also a lifetime member of the Hanoverian Breeders’ Club of Eastern Canada. “The word Hanoverian and the name Fritz Floto are synonymous in North America.” —Horse Sport magazine Fritz Floto was born at Gut Gaedebehn in Mecklenburg in 1924, the son of a family with a long tradition in horse breeding. He IN PASSING experienced the horrors of World War II in a cavalry regiment and with the artillery in Russia, where he was wounded several times. In 1952 Fritz Floto emigrated to Canada. He and his wife Erica settled down in the Guelph area in Ontario and started a dairy farm. The couple had two sons. He sold his cattle in 1968 and accepted employment at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph. In 1961 he bought two mares, Windrose, by Weiler, and Fernanda, by Fernjaeger, as well as the stallion Weimar, by Firnis, all of which had been imported to Calgary a short time before. With these horses he laid the foundation of Hanoverian breeding in Canada. In close cooperation with the German Hannoveraner Verband and the Lower Saxony state stud at Celle he imported further stallions in the following years such as Denar by Duft, Waidmann by Waidmannsdank xx, Ansturm by Adlerfarn II, Equuleus by Eindruck II, Sandsturm by Sendbote, Lepanto by Leibwächer, and lastly Welfenschatz by Walhall. As a judge and its branding representative Fritz Floto was for many decades a pillar for the Hannoveraner Verband in Eastern Canada. He was an honorary member of the American Hanoverian Society and a long standing member of the AHS Mare and Stallion Committee. The Hannoveraner Verband in Germany and Hanoverian breeders all over North America mourn the passing of a great horseman who was always open to discuss the issues with breeding and raising Hanoverians.
