out that Winzalot was allergic to the internal sutures so he herniated. He had a second surgery to replace the sutures with metal staples, but he reacted to the staples as well and UC Davis performed a third surgery to remove those. It’s been a long haul, and this was only their second show of the 2012 season. Luckily, Pestana was able to ride Winzalot a bit between surgeries and that helped get them back in the show ring. “I’m working on getting his strength back,” explained Pestana. “At each show he’s been a little stronger. Friday, in the team test, he was a little excitable but Saturday’s Individual test was better. I thought moments of it were some of our best moves ever. And then there were movements when his attention span just wasn’t there. Overall, I was happy with him considering everything. He’s finally getting his fitness and strength back.” Winzalot, a 16.3-hand dark bay, placed second in all three of the Young Rider selection classes with scores of 66.272%, 24 T HE AMERICAN HANOVERIAN 68.772% and 73.042%. The pair placed second in the Freestyle by only .208%. Their freestyle music was put together by Terry Gallo, which included “Fun House” by Pink for the walk work, music from Slum Dog Millionaire for the trot, and “Today is Your Last Day” by Nickelback for the canter. “I thought his canter work was pretty good other than one spook,” said Pestana. “It was the most rideable he’s been in the canter. His trot work was maybe not our best but he was still satisfactory. And his canter pirouettes were really good.” Pestana purchased Winzalot as a threeyear-old. Dennis Callin had found him for Pestana at Catherine Haddad’s barn in Germany. He was bred by Hans- Heiner Duescher. Chelsey Sibley of Sonora, Calif., rode Starr Vaughn Equestrian’s 10-year-old Hanoverian stallion Donner Starr to wins in the Prix St. Georges on all three days. His scores went up as the show went on earning 66.97%, 68.289% and 71.842%. “Here, he’s just been a star,” said Sibley. “He’s finally starting to get the whole program down. He’s really strong in the Prix St. Georges and I’ll start showing him at Intermediaire I soon.” “He was so easy and strong riding through the test,” continued Sibley. “Everything has gotten better. His pirouettes have progressed. They’ve sort of been a problem that he’s had for a little bit, now he’s doing really well. I’m working on keeping him up more in the extended trot. He’s coming out of his shoulder now that we’ve started working on the Grand Prix movements.” “Rancho Murieta was a new place for him and he was a little worried the first day and distracted by stuff, but he did everything I wanted and was really good. When he’s good he’s easy to ride. You just sit up there and ride him through the test and it’s automatic. He’s been getting like this the last few months. I’ve had him for two years and it seems like it takes me about that long to really get to know a horse and for
them to get to know me and my aids. I feel that we’re really in sync now and he’s understanding everything that I want,” said Sibley. Starr Vaughn Equestrian of Wilton, Calif., bred Donner Starr (Domiro-EM Waranja/Walt Disney I). His dam EM Waranja is one of Genay Vaughn’s young rider mounts, and placed sixth at the Festival of Champions at Gladstone earlier this month. Carrie Harnden of Escalon, Calif., scored over 70% in all of her classes with her four-year-old Hanoverian mare Cabria JW. They won four of their five classes at the show. Cabria JW is by the Elite stallion Cabalito out of Pagoda, by Prinz Gaylord, and was bred by Josie Walsh of Los Gatos, Calif. Harnden purchased Cabria JW from Walsh as a two-year-old. Donner Star was bred by Starr Vaughn Equestrian Center of Wilton, Calif. “She has jumping lines but she’s proving to be a good dressage horse,” said Harnden. “I broke her and she’s been very easy and so uncomplicated. She’s the best horse I’ve owned in my life. Her trainability is amazing.” This was Cabria’s third show under saddle and she won all of her classes at the Shasta Chapter of the CDS show in May and at the Dressage in the Redwoods show. Label photos clearly and send to: Terri Ralenkotter, AHS Publications Editor 12574 Andrews Road ■ Walton, KY 41094 E-mail: ahs_editor@hanoverian.org SHERI SCOTT PHOTO 2012 INSPECTION TOUR REMINDER Mare Inspection Photos Needed Photos of all new 2012 Elite Mares, Elite Mare Candidates, High Score Hanoverians and non-Hanoverian mares from the inspection sites, new Jumper Breeding Program mares, and the mares upgraded from Studbook to Main Studbook in 2012 through performance are needed for publication in the inspection reports included in the fall and winter issues of The American Hanoverian, as well as for the Mare Book section of the 2013 AHS Breeders’ Guide and Stallion Directory. The AHS would like to include as many photos of these mares as possible. Photos must be received immediately after the inspections for use in The American Hanoverian reports, and no later than November 20, 2012 for inclusion in the 2013 AHS Breeders’ Guide and Stallion Directory. Calif., last weekend. Cabria was awarded Reserve Champion Filly at the USDF Region 7 Championships last October. “Cabria was a little tense out there, but her trainability is so great,” said Harnden of their Materiale class on Saturday morning where they scored 78.1%. “She just settled as she went on out there. She was unflappable. The judge [Sarah Geikie] loved her.
