Minutes of the Board of Directors Teleconference Meeting
Friday, February 3, 2012

called the meeting to order
at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
Present: Vanessa Carlson, Steve Carroll,
Judy Hedreen, Doug Langer, Doug
Leatherdale, Suzanne Quarles, Barbara
Schmidt, Edgar Schutte, Cathy Tucker-
Slaterbeck, Meg Williams, and Executive
Director Hugh Bellis-Jones. Not
present Volker Ehlers and Rick Toering.
President Edgar Schutte reported that
the AHS had a great annual meeting
in Florida. Member Sandy Hunt will
organize and host the 2013 meeting
in San Diego. The AHS is considering
sponsorship opportunities for 2013;
Mr. Schutte will report back to the
board when further details are available.
Motion to approve the minutes of
the Board’s January 20, 2012 meeting.
Passed.
Executive Director’s Report: The 2012
Stallion Book is at the printer and will
be mailed the week of February 6.
Carol Hienzsch begins her employment
with the AHS on February 13.
Sandra Werkheiser will continue as
AHS Website Director; she will also
continue to produce monthly press
releases and national advertising in
print media. The Special Marketing
and Education Committee will lead
the search for a new individual to
produce the Stallion Book and quarterly
magazine. The AHS has signed
a five-year (2012-2016) lifetime foal
recording contract with the United
States Equestrian Foundation (USEF).
Judy Hedreen reported on the possible
development of a Hanoverian Young
Breeders Camp. The concept would
be to introduce young breeders to the
Hanoverian breed with the goal of
having an AHS Young Breeders Team
at the 2017 World Championships
for Young Breeders that will be held
in Canada. Maren Schlender from
the Verband would be involved with
this. Scholarship funds may be available.
Christine Kropf, Gina Leslie and
Dorie Vlatten-Schmitz will work on
this project.
The Board discussed the establishment
of a Special Mare Matching Committee
to assist breeders in making breeding
decisions. After lengthy discussion the
Board decided to table this subject
until its next meeting.
Motion to add an AHS membership
directory to the members’ only section
of the AHS website. An opt out option
would be included. Passed.
Judy Hedreen introduced the USEF
Young Horse Championships and
Festival. This is a new week-long
show to be held at the Kentucky
Horse Park in September 2013. The
goal is to showcase young horses,
create a greater market for breeders,
promote American-bred horses, and
attract buyers looking for potential
future athletes. This venue may be
an excellent opportunity to promote
Hanoverians. Judy Hedreen will
report back to the board with any
new developments.
Mr. Schutte reported that the next issue
of Warmbloods Today would feature
a special section on The American
Hanoverian Society. Publisher Liz
Cornell had indicated that at 132
pages, this was by far their largest
issue yet. The board agreed to permit
the AHS mailing list to be used to
send a complimentary copy of this
issue to every AHS member.
The board discussed the planning of
the 2012 Inspection Tour. Motion
that beginning in 2012, the AHS will
require all inspection sites to provide
proof of liability insurance to the AHS.
In addition, the AHS, its officers, judges,
designees, and AHS staff will be listed
as additionally insured parties for
the day of inspection. Passed.
The Board discussed a proposal
from the Virginia Tech Middleburg
Agricultural Research and Extension
Center to conduct a Genetic Analysis
of the Hanoverian horse. After discussion
the Board declined to fund
this project.
There being no further business,
Mr. Schutte adjourned the meeting
at 4:15 p.m. n
