The <strong>American</strong> <strong>Hanoverian</strong> <strong>Society</strong><br />
Minutes of <strong>the</strong> Board of Directors Teleconference Meeting<br />
Friday, February 3, <strong>2012</strong><br />

called <strong>the</strong> meeting to order<br />
at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time.<br />
Present: Vanessa Carlson, Steve Carroll,<br />
Judy Hedreen, Doug Langer, Doug<br />
Lea<strong>the</strong>rdale, Suzanne Quarles, Barbara<br />
Schmidt, Edgar Schutte, Cathy Tucker-<br />
Slaterbeck, Meg Williams, and Executive<br />
Director Hugh Bellis-Jones. Not<br />
present Volker Ehlers and Rick Toering.<br />
President Edgar Schutte reported that<br />
<strong>the</strong> AHS had a great annual meeting<br />
in Florida. Member Sandy Hunt will<br />
organize and host <strong>the</strong> 2013 meeting<br />
in San Diego. The AHS is considering<br />
sponsorship opportunities for 2013;<br />
Mr. Schutte will report back to <strong>the</strong><br />
board when fur<strong>the</strong>r details are available.<br />
Motion to approve <strong>the</strong> minutes of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Board’s January 20, <strong>2012</strong> meeting.<br />
Passed.<br />
Executive Director’s Report: The <strong>2012</strong><br />
Stallion Book is at <strong>the</strong> printer and will<br />
be mailed <strong>the</strong> week of February 6.<br />
Carol Hienzsch begins her employment<br />
with <strong>the</strong> AHS on February 13.<br />
Sandra Werkheiser will continue as<br />
AHS Website Director; she will also<br />
continue to produce monthly press<br />
releases and national advertising in<br />
print media. The Special Marketing<br />
and Education Committee will lead<br />
<strong>the</strong> search for a new individual to<br />
produce <strong>the</strong> Stallion Book and quarterly<br />
magazine. The AHS has signed<br />
a five-year (<strong>2012</strong>-2016) lifetime foal<br />
recording contract with <strong>the</strong> United<br />
States Equestrian Foundation (USEF).<br />
Judy Hedreen reported on <strong>the</strong> possible<br />
development of a <strong>Hanoverian</strong> Young<br />
Breeders Camp. The concept would<br />
be to introduce young breeders to <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Hanoverian</strong> breed with <strong>the</strong> goal of<br />
having an AHS Young Breeders Team<br />
at <strong>the</strong> 2017 World Championships<br />
for Young Breeders that will be held<br />
in Canada. Maren Schlender from<br />
<strong>the</strong> Verband would be involved with<br />
this. Scholarship funds may be available.<br />
Christine Kropf, Gina Leslie and<br />
Dorie Vlatten-Schmitz will work on<br />
this project.<br />
The Board discussed <strong>the</strong> establishment<br />
of a Special Mare Matching Committee<br />
to assist breeders in making breeding<br />
decisions. After lengthy discussion <strong>the</strong><br />
Board decided to table this subject<br />
until its next meeting.<br />
Motion to add an AHS membership<br />
directory to <strong>the</strong> members’ only section<br />
of <strong>the</strong> AHS website. An opt out option<br />
would be included. Passed.<br />
Judy Hedreen introduced <strong>the</strong> USEF<br />
Young Horse Championships and<br />
Festival. This is a new week-long<br />
show to be held at <strong>the</strong> Kentucky<br />
Horse Park in September 2013. The<br />
goal is to showcase young horses,<br />
create a greater market for breeders,<br />
promote <strong>American</strong>-bred horses, and<br />
attract buyers looking for potential<br />
future athletes. This venue may be<br />
an excellent opportunity to promote<br />
<strong>Hanoverian</strong>s. Judy Hedreen will<br />
report back to <strong>the</strong> board with any<br />
new developments.<br />
Mr. Schutte reported that <strong>the</strong> next issue<br />
of Warmbloods Today would feature<br />
a special section on The <strong>American</strong><br />
<strong>Hanoverian</strong> <strong>Society</strong>. Publisher Liz<br />
Cornell had indicated that at 132<br />
pages, this was by far <strong>the</strong>ir largest<br />
issue yet. The board agreed to permit<br />
<strong>the</strong> AHS mailing list to be used to<br />
send a complimentary copy of this<br />
issue to every AHS member.<br />
The board discussed <strong>the</strong> planning of<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>2012</strong> Inspection Tour. Motion<br />
that beginning in <strong>2012</strong>, <strong>the</strong> AHS will<br />
require all inspection sites to provide<br />
proof of liability insurance to <strong>the</strong> AHS.<br />
In addition, <strong>the</strong> AHS, its officers, judges,<br />
designees, and AHS staff will be listed<br />
as additionally insured parties for<br />
<strong>the</strong> day of inspection. Passed.<br />
The Board discussed a proposal<br />
from <strong>the</strong> Virginia Tech Middleburg<br />
Agricultural Research and Extension<br />
Center to conduct a Genetic Analysis<br />
of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Hanoverian</strong> horse. After discussion<br />
<strong>the</strong> Board declined to fund<br />
this project.<br />
There being no fur<strong>the</strong>r business,<br />
Mr. Schutte adjourned <strong>the</strong> meeting<br />
at 4:15 p.m. n<br />
