2011 HiGHliGHTS 

Providence benedictine nursing Center foundation 

n Providence benedictine nursing Center received the Excellence 

in action award from My innerView, a national source of data 

on skilled nursing facilities. The award honors facilities rated 

in the top 10 percent nationally for outstanding customer 

satisfaction. “We are honored to be considered among the 

nation’s best,” said Emily Dazey, executive director of Providence 

benedictine. “This award belongs to everyone on our team 

for the excellent, compassionate care they provide every day.” 

Donations play a significant role in helping the nursing center 

maintain its superb service. 

n Thanks to a pledge from a generous donor, the nursing center 

was able to begin building an endowment for the maintenance 

of its therapy gardens. These colorful, sensory-rich gardens are 

an integral part of the environment and a popular haven for 

residents, families and staff. Studies show that patients exposed 

to natural light and the beauty of the outdoors feel better and 

heal faster.

n new engineering in the way mattresses are made is providing 

patients and residents with high-tech mattresses that literally shift 

their weight for them, making a big difference in health and 

comfort. Donors to the 2010-2011 special-equipment campaign, 

dubbed “While You Were Sleeping,” gave $24,846 to provide the 

nursing center’s most fragile residents with state-of-the-art mattresses. 

n Providence benedictine’s nationally accredited Child 

Development Center gives nursing center residents abundant 

opportunities to interact with children. Together, the generations 

can enjoy friendly visits, exercise classes, craft projects, games, 

parties, parades and more. Having children visit daily in the 

nursing center brightens everyone’s day. More than $22,000 was 

raised from the Juan Young Trust, other foundations, individuals 

and staff to replace the children’s well-worn climbing structure.

Providence Child Center foundation 

n Donations made possible the staffing, educational materials 

and classes that parents and families seek from the Swindells 

Resource Center of Providence Child Center. Providing 

resources that enhance the lives of children with disabilities, the 

Swindells center in 2011 assisted more than 12,000 families and 

professionals across oregon and southwest Washington at its 

five locations. Many of the children and families served reside in 

rural regions with limited medical and educational resources. 

n Charitable gifts from generous community supporters helped 

out in so many ways: They helped give medically fragile 

children a voice by funding speech therapy and tools for 

assistive communication; provided greater access to a physical 

therapist and aquatic therapy sessions; and strengthened the 

children’s developmental abilities through recreational therapy 

using art, music and play. 

n The Pediatric Specialty Dental and Medical Clinic exists 

because of the generosity and vision of the community. opened 

in 2010, this one-stop clinic enables Providence Child Center’s 

medically fragile children to receive the dental and medical 

care they need without having to leave the center. Dental 

care for children with disabilities requires a true commitment 

to serve children with special needs in a loving and caring 

manner, including human touch, significant encouragement 

and patience. Children with special needs from the community, 

along with their siblings, also may receive dental care there. 

now a visit to the dentist or doctor means less interruption in 

the lives of the children, their families and the center staff.

Providence Community Health foundation 

n Providence festival of Trees in Medford celebrated 20 years of 

holiday joy. from the first event in 1992, which raised $63,000 

for Providence Hospice, through the 20th annual event, more 

than $6 million has been raised in support of priority projects 

at Providence Medford Medical Center. The formal opening 

night Gala welcomed 275 guests; the Holiday Party entertained 

close to 550 people; and the Evening of Giving reached out 

to more than 1,200 children in need and foster families. More 

than $463,000 was raised during the five-day event, with net 

proceeds going to support Providence Spine institute and 

interventional pain management. The foundation acknowledges 

that the festival would not be possible without the generous 

support of community sponsors and helping hands of all the 

volunteers. 

n The southern oregon branch of the Swindells Resource Center 

of Providence Child Center attracted significant funding in 

2011. This will allow it to provide sign language classes, create 

a speakers series, and expand its hours to meet the growing 

requests from families of children with disabilities. The

n in addition to the 39,000 hours that Providence Guild 

volunteers donated to Providence Medford, the Guild board 

contributed $45,552 to the sterile processing department and 

perioperative services. 

n a variety of community events supported the Sister Therese 

Kohles fund, which enables women in financial need to receive 

screening services at the hospital’s leila J. Eisenstein breast 

Center. The annual Tee it up to battle breast Cancer golf 

tournament in July at Rogue Valley Country Club raised more 

than $13,000, and breast Cancer awareness Month activities 

in october brought in $25,000. The foundation is grateful to

Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital foundation 

n on a sunny Saturday in June, businesses, individuals and groups 

joined together to play the 20th bedpan open golf tournament. 

Golfers enjoyed a healthy lunch during play and, later, a 

casual dinner and auction under the stars. Tourney proceeds 

supported “Growing Gorge Kids,” a collaboration between 

Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital foundation and 

other community organizations, which emphasizes preventing 

childhood obesity and promoting good nutrition. Most of 

the funds went toward a new community kitchen. attendees 

cheered the winning golf team from Providence Health Plans: 

Cheryl Scarcelli, William olson, Eric olson and Carol Herman. 

n Hood River loves to celebrate local heroes, and the annual 

Hearts of Gold events are a great way to do this. Guests 

at the november luncheon and gala enjoyed an intriguing 

atmosphere featuring a “Casablanca” theme. The Hearts of 

Gold award recipients for 2011 were Gordy Sato, beloved 

community member and volunteer, and J. Kyle House, D.M.D, 

a pediatric dentist known for providing free dental services 

to uninsured children. Proceeds from both events benefit the 

Julie beliel Cancer Screening Voucher Program, which provides 

mammograms, other cancer screenings and preventive education 

for people in financial need. as a special touch, Julie herself 

served as emcee at the luncheon and gala, sharing laughter, tears 

and joy with the crowd.

Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital foundation 

n The Gorge Dental access Coalition continued to provide free 

dental vouchers to underserved Hood River County residents. 

This community group, made up of providers, health department 

employees, school district representatives and the hospital 

foundation, plans to renew efforts to raise funds for this vital 

effort in 2012. The coalition also is considering expanding 

services to more patients in other age groups. in March 2011, 

the program was honored as co-recipient of the Providence 

Mission leadership award.

Providence Milwaukie foundation 

n Expanding lifesaving services for women, Providence 

Milwaukie foundation in 2011 completed its $360,000 

fundraising campaign to purchase a much-needed second 

digital mammography machine. The new, state-of-the-art 

device generates 3-D images of the breast to increase diagnostic 

accuracy. Providence Milwaukie Hospital is only the second 

facility in oregon to acquire this advanced technology. 

n Generous gifts from the community and a lead gift from 

Safeway enabled the hospital to host its second annual 

mammography clinic. During Mission Week in September, 

staff provided free screenings for 90 uninsured Clackamas 

County women. “We’re proud that Providence Milwaukie’s 

clinic has inspired our colleagues at other Portland Service area 

hospitals to hold their own clinics, so that many more women 

without access to a mammogram will be served,” said Penny 

Wilson, diagnostic imaging manager.

n benefiting mammography services, the 2011 Partners in Health 

dinner oct. 13 featured a video testimonial from grateful 

patient and special guest Pam lamb. Pam’s husband had lost his 

job, and with no insurance she hadn’t had a mammogram for 

years. She learned about the hospital’s free mammography clinic 

and was relieved to secure an appointment. after being called 

back for more testing, Pam received the good news in December 

that her health was fine. 

n a couple who exemplify community spirit and the Providence 

Mission, John and Peggy brockamp, were presented the 2011 

outstanding inspiration award at the annual Donor barbecue 

on aug. 25. John is a past president and lifetime member of 

the Providence Milwaukie foundation board who is active in 

community service. Peggy, a retired nurse, has volunteered at 

many of the hospital’s Community Health in Motion clinics. 

active in their church, the brockamps also volunteer with 

the Tarahumara Children’s Hospital fund of oregon, which 

provides financial support for a hospital in Mexico that provides 

lifesaving care for the Tarahumara indians. 

For their generosity of spirit and their service, John and Peggy 

Brockamp were honored with the 2011 Outstanding inspiration 

award at the annual Donor Barbecue.

Providence newberg Health foundation 

n Supporters of Providence newberg Health foundation were issued 

a challenge by a newberg company, uSHio america, inc: for 

anyone willing to make an estate gift commitment in 2011, uSHio 

would promptly contribute $1,000 to the foundation in recognition 

of this generosity. Matching gifts were to be made for the first eight 

commitments, for a total of $8,000. 

n More than 95 children with special needs received rehabilitation 

therapy free of charge in 2011 through the foundation’s HoPE for 

Children fund. With the support of title sponsor integra Telecom 

and more than 35 other companies, the annual HoPE for Children 

Golf Classic Tournament in July 2011 raised more than $156,000 – 

a record sum – for the fund. 

n Hearts of Gold, an annual luncheon supporting and celebrating 

newberg community organizations and individuals, raised nearly 

$50,000 for the Mike olberding Education fund. Those honored 

with 2011 Hearts of Gold awards on June 7 were Early bird 

newberg Rotary, noon Rotary of newberg, Kiwanis of newberg, 

and John and nancy nyberg of newberg. The fund provides 

scholarships for further education and training of Providence 

newberg health care providers. 

n More than 690 older adults received a helping hand from the 

more than 1,000 faith in action volunteers who gave more than 

10,000 hours of service. 

n During 2011, Providence newberg Medical Center was able to provide 

excellent, compassionate patient care on nearly 200,000 occasions for 

members of the community, thanks in part to generous donors.

n Providence Portland Medical foundation and a board 

representative helped coordinate an outdoor Mass of Thanksgiving 

that celebrated Providence Portland Medical Center’s 70th 

anniversary of serving the greater Portland community. archbishop 

John G. Vlazny presided at the Mass, which honored all those who 

serve at and are served by the hospital that archbishop Edward 

Howard dedicated on Sept. 8, 1941. The anniversary also was a 

farewell celebration for Sister Rita ferschweiler and Sister lenora 

Donovan, the last Sisters of Providence to reside in the convent at 

Providence Portland. They were moving to the Sisters of Providence 

retirement residence in Seattle. 

n Providence Cancer Center researchers andrew Weinberg, Ph.D., 

and brendan Curti, M.D., received new support to continue 

research on oX40, a promising immunotherapy approach in 

cancer treatment. Their clinical and laboratory research led to 

a partnership with Medimmune, a division of astraZeneca. 

Medimmune will provide funding for continued oX40 study at 

the Robert W. franz Cancer Research Center in the Earle a. Chiles 

Research institute. The foundation provided the initial funding for 

this important research.

n on feb. 2, 2011, nearly three years after the opening of the 

Providence Cancer Center tower, foundation board members 

watched the final piece of the “Center of Hope” come into place at 

the dedication and blessing of the fountain Café. board members 

were instrumental in raising funds to complete the cancer center. 

after the ribbon cutting, attendees were treated to samples from the 

new café’s menu. 

n Toward building a new guest housing facility, Providence 

Portland Medical foundation received more than $475,000 in 

gifts, which brought the total to almost $1 million, pushing us 

closer to ground breaking. The facility, featuring 30 guest rooms, 

will provide a welcoming place of lodging for patients and 

families from out of town.

Providence St. Vincent Medical foundation 

n Through Providence Heart and Vascular institute, patients now 

have access to the most progressive cardiac care procedure in the 

world. Gifts of support helped fund the new Providence Valve 

Center, one of the first 25 sites in the nation to offer the new 

Sapien valve to patients who are too sick to have traditional openheart 

surgery. The collapsible Sapien valve, manufactured by 

Edwards lifesciences Corp., is made of cow tissue and polyester 

and supported with a stainless steel mesh frame. it is implanted in 

the heart in a minimally invasive procedure via a catheter threaded 

through the circulatory system from a groin artery incision. 

Providence also has been invited to participate in clinical trials for 

the valve’s next version. 

n Providence orthopedic institute has quickly established itself as a 

leader in patient care, research and education. in 2011, the institute 

embarked on a data registry to compare the success of various 

therapies in order to provide the best patient care, and received 

approval for an orthopedic surgery residency that will enable two 

senior residents to train at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. 

Providence Sports Care Center, located at JElD-WEn field, 

opened in april 2011 and features a state-of-the-art orthopedic 

rehabilitation center.

Providence St. Vincent Medical foundation 

n in 2011, Providence Telestroke network expanded to encompass 

14 partner hospitals in oregon and southwest Washington. The 

program received a $253,000 federal grant to provide telestroke 

services to five hospitals in remote parts of eastern and southern 

oregon. Through Providence’s commitment to education and 

training, stroke care processes and patient outcomes have improved 

measurably in the partner hospitals. 

n My little Waiting Room, the hospital’s on-site child care center, 

celebrated its first anniversary in april 2011 and was co-recipient 

of the Providence Mission leadership award. The facility served 

more than 3,840 families during the year. 

supported by donors, My little Waiting room offers free 

drop-in child care to ease the way for parents attending 

medical appointments or visiting hospitalized loved ones.

Providence Seaside Hospital foundation 

n Helping keep infants healthy, warm and comfortable is the 

new, high-tech baby warmer that Providence Seaside Hospital 

foundation provided for the hospital’s family birthing unit. The 

GE Healthcare Panda® warmer not only rewarms and stabilizes 

the newborn immediately after delivery, but also provides optimal 

resuscitation if the infant needs respiratory care. for purchase 

of this equipment, the foundation received funds from many 

supporters including the b.P. lester & Regina John foundation, 

the Juan Young Trust and Providence Enterprise information 

Systems. Proceeds from the 2011 Hot Rod Classic Charity Golf 

Tournament and Dinner/auction, cosponsored by the foundation 

and the Seaside Downtown Development association, helped fund 

the baby warmer and other upgrades to the family birthing unit. 

n Residents of the hospital’s Extended Care unit got a boost in safety 

and comfort, thanks to new equipment provided by donations to 

the foundation. The unit acquired two low-height beds, designed 

to minimize falls, along with two special mattresses engineered 

to prevent bedsores. also, the unit received funds to purchase 

equipment in 2012 for lifting and transferring residents. 

The b.P. lester & Regina John foundation gave $15,000 for the 

Extended Care unit equipment. other donors provided amenities 

such as CD players, televisions and garden plants. 


gearhart golf links provided the scenic summer setting for the 

hot rod Classic Charity golf Tournament and Dinner/auction, 

which benefited the hospital’s family birthing unit.

Providence Seaside Hospital foundation 

n by funding technology to detect heart disease early, the foundation’s 

Providence festival of Trees held in December 2011 helped 

ensure that some community members will have many more 

holiday seasons to enjoy. The festival raised about $75,000 

toward purchasing software that interfaces with a CT (computed 

tomography) scanner to check for calcium deposits in plaque on 

the walls of the coronary arteries. The presence of calcium is a 

sign of coronary artery disease, which can lead to heart attack. 

Early detection can be a lifesaver. The new technology is in use at 

Providence Heart Clinic-north Coast. 

Partygoers raised bid cards and charitable funds at the Providence Festival of 

Trees gala and auction in seaside during the holiday season.

Providence Willamette falls Medical foundation 

n Specialized equipment that can make a quick, accurate and 

noninvasive diagnosis was purchased by the hospital’s Emergency 

Services Department, thanks to a grant from Providence 

Willamette falls Medical foundation. When an emergency 

patient is admitted with lower-abdominal pain, it’s important to 

determine whether there is urinary retention. The department’s 

new bladderScan, essentially a mini-ultrasound, is able to assess 

urinary retention and monitor urinary output. 

“Without this equipment, we may have inserted a catheter in the 

bladder, only to learn it wasn’t necessary,” said John Yarris, M.D., 

medical director of emergency services at Providence Willamette 

falls Medical Center. The scanner is especially helpful to patients 

who have had a spinal cord injury or are paraplegic. “We are 

grateful to the foundation,” Dr. Yarris said, “for this support to 

provide compassionate, quality care to our community.”

Providence Willamette falls Medical foundation 

n With the soothing sounds of harp and voice, a certified musicthanatologist 

is offering comfort and support to patients and their 

loved ones at Providence Willamette falls Medical Center. The 

foundation provided a one-year grant in 2011 for the part-time 

services of Suzanne Cerddeu. Music-thanatology is a clinical practice 

that addresses physical symptoms, anxiety and spiritual pain through 

live, prescriptive music of harp and voice at the bedside. The music 

is tailored to respond to the patient’s condition and needs. although 

the main focus is on end-of-life care, music-thanatology can also be 

used to provide comfort care for any patient. 

“i’ve worked with people in transition all my life, from maternity 

to adolescent health and now end of life,” said Suzanne, who had a 

long career in nursing. “When you are present with someone at the 

end of their life, you can feel the gift. it creates so much beauty and 

calm and conveys love.” 

Music-thanatologist suzanne Cerddeu, who has loved the harp since 

childhood, brings comfort care to the hospital bedside of sally stiglbauer.
