n Providence Portland Medical foundation and a board
representative helped coordinate an outdoor Mass of Thanksgiving
that celebrated Providence Portland Medical Center’s 70th
anniversary of serving the greater Portland community. archbishop
John G. Vlazny presided at the Mass, which honored all those who
serve at and are served by the hospital that archbishop Edward
Howard dedicated on Sept. 8, 1941. The anniversary also was a
farewell celebration for Sister Rita ferschweiler and Sister lenora
Donovan, the last Sisters of Providence to reside in the convent at
Providence Portland. They were moving to the Sisters of Providence
retirement residence in Seattle.
n Providence Cancer Center researchers andrew Weinberg, Ph.D.,
and brendan Curti, M.D., received new support to continue
research on oX40, a promising immunotherapy approach in
cancer treatment. Their clinical and laboratory research led to
a partnership with Medimmune, a division of astraZeneca.
Medimmune will provide funding for continued oX40 study at
the Robert W. franz Cancer Research Center in the Earle a. Chiles
Research institute. The foundation provided the initial funding for
this important research.
