<strong>Providence</strong> Willamette falls Medical foundation<br />

n With the sooth<strong>in</strong>g sounds of harp and voice, a certified musicthanatologist<br />

is offer<strong>in</strong>g comfort and support to patients and their<br />

loved ones at <strong>Providence</strong> Willamette falls Medical Center. The<br />

foundation provided a one-year grant <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong> for the part-time<br />

services of Suzanne Cerddeu. Music-thanatology is a cl<strong>in</strong>ical practice<br />

that addresses physical symptoms, anxiety and spiritual pa<strong>in</strong> through<br />

live, prescriptive music of harp and voice at the bedside. The music<br />

is tailored to respond to the patient’s condition and needs. although<br />

the ma<strong>in</strong> focus is on end-of-life care, music-thanatology can also be<br />

used to provide comfort care for any patient.<br />

“i’ve worked with people <strong>in</strong> transition all my life, from maternity<br />

to adolescent health and now end of life,” said Suzanne, who had a<br />

long career <strong>in</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g. “When you are present with someone at the<br />

end of their life, you can feel the gift. it creates so much beauty and<br />

calm and conveys love.”<br />
