History of the Carson Scholars Fund About Dr. Ben Carson
The vision for the Carson Scholars Fund came from Dr.
Benjamin S. Carson and his wife, Candy, who had long
noted that many school display cases were filled with large
trophies paying tribute to their teams’ sports achievements,
while honor students traditionally received a simple pin or
certificate. Then, after reading a research study which said
that students in the United States ranked number 21 out of
22 countries in science and math, the Carsons felt compelled
to take action. In 1994, the Carson Scholars Fund, Inc., a
non-profit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization was launched.
Its mission was unique—offering college scholarship
awards to students beginning in the 4th grade based on high
academic achievement and humanitarianism, regardless of
financial need and other factors.
The scholarship program illuminated another need in
our schools: encouraging independent reading. In his
autobiography, Gifted Hands, Dr. Carson wrote about
how his life was changed once he embraced reading. For
this reason, The Ben Carson Reading Room Project was
launched in 2000 to counteract illiteracy, encourage leisure
reading in young children, and help all youth grow into
stronger students.
Since they began, both programs have grown in scope and
size. Now, after 15 years of discovering academic promise
in young people, the Carson Scholars Fund is thrilled to
announce that through the generosity of a W.K. Kellogg
Foundation grant we have an opportunity to conduct a
research study. This 10-year comprehensive longitudinal
evaluation will help measure the impact of the scholarship
and reading room programs on students, schools and the
community. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation grant will
support FERA, an independent research team, who will
gather comprehensive data, analyze our impact, and report
the findings. We look forward to sharing the impact of our
work with our generous donors and stakeholders.
Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D., had
a childhood dream of becoming a
physician. Growing up in a single parent
home with dire poverty, poor grades,
a horrible temper, and low self-esteem
appeared to preclude the realization of
that dream until his mother, with only
a third-grade education, challenged her
sons to strive for excellence. Young Ben
persevered and today is a full professor
of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at
the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and he has directed
pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children’s
Center for over a quarter of a century. He became the
inaugural recipient of a professorship dedicated in his name
in May, 2008.
Dr. Carson holds more than 60 honorary doctorate degrees.
In 2001, Dr. Carson was named by CNN and TIME
Magazine as one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and
scientists. In June, 2008, he was awarded the Presidential
Medal of Freedom by the President, which is the highest
civilian honor in the land. On February 7, 2009, the movie
entitled “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story” premiered on
TNT and is based on his memoir.
He is president and co-founder of the Carson Scholars Fund,
which recognizes young people of all backgrounds for
exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishments.
The Fund is currently operating in 42 states and the District
of Columbia, having awarded more than $ 4.3 million
dollars in scholarship funds and honored over 4,300 scholars
with their families.
Dr. Carson speaks to about 5,000 students annually on the
campus of Johns Hopkins during his 75-minute THINK BIG
presentations in which he gives a medical slide show and
motivational talk discussing his career as a neurosurgeon,
other medical careers, and his philosophies. Students
attending this presentation come from schools all over
the state of Maryland, surrounding states, and even states
across the country. This word-of-mouth program has
had a profound effect upon those students who have been
privileged to attend.
Dr. Carson has authored four non-medical books, Gifted
Hands, THINK BIG, The Big Picture and Take The Risk:
Learning to Identify, Choose, and Live With Acceptable
Risk. Dr. Carson has been married for over 30 years to his
wife, Candy, and is the father of three sons. And yes, his
mother, Sonya Carson, who made all this possible, is alive
and well.
honor roll” as one of his favorite activities! He plans on becoming a dentist in the future, and has a clear
list of steps planned out to help him reach his goal of becoming Dr. Rolle. He is very involved with his
church and volunteers at a food pantry. He also uses his extra time during the school day to work with first
grade students. In addition to helping them with reading, he serves as an excellent role model for these
younger students.
Emily Simonson
very involved with her school’s violin program, and has played at a Mayoral Inauguration, a fundraiser,
a City Council Meeting, numerous holiday events, and at retirement homes. She is also a member of the
drum and choir groups at her school. Beyond music, Emily is an extremely committed volunteer. When
asked what rule she would make for her school, she answered that every student should have to volunteer!
Even at a young age Emily understands the benefits of volunteering, and views community service as a
way to learn kindness and compassion, help others, and build a sense of community.
positive humanitarian qualities of a Carson Scholar. Honored
guests included: Tony Dungy, former NFL coach of the
2006 World Champion Indianapolis Colts; James V. Kimsey,
founding CEO and Chairman Emeritus of American Online,
Inc.; and General Charles V. Krulak, 31st Commandant of
the United States Marine Corps. The honorees addressed
the scholars and shared life lessons. Dr. Carson delivered
an inspirational keynote address and then the scholars were
recognized.
Friendraiser
Dr. Garth McDonald and his engaging wife Jennifer hosted a
beautiful event at their charming home in Phoenix, MD on
May 10th. These dear friends of longtime Carson Scholar
supporters, Eddie and Sylvia Brown, had more than 50
attendees drinking in the enchanting setting as the sun
slowly sank.
Dr. Ben Carson’s informal talk stretched from the precarious
state of our nation, to opportunities to make a difference to
improve our plight. Candy Carson spoke on the effect of the
Ben Carson Reading Rooms, and how comprehension levels
and test scores have risen as a result of the other “arm” of
the organization. Two Carson Scholars, Danielle Saman
from Sparks Elementary School and Andrew Schaefer from
Hereford Middle School, delivered impressive remarks to
the invited guests.
During the question and answer period a local engineering
firm partner, Fred Mirmiran, challenged everyone with a
very generous match. The match was met, making this one
of our largest fundraising events of the year.
