History of the Carson Scholars Fund About Dr. Ben Carson The vision for the Carson Scholars Fund came from Dr. Benjamin S. Carson and his wife, Candy, who had long noted that many school display cases were filled with large trophies paying tribute to their teams’ sports achievements, while honor students traditionally received a simple pin or certificate. Then, after reading a research study which said that students in the United States ranked number 21 out of 22 countries in science and math, the Carsons felt compelled to take action. In 1994, the Carson Scholars Fund, Inc., a non-profit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization was launched. Its mission was unique—offering college scholarship awards to students beginning in the 4th grade based on high academic achievement and humanitarianism, regardless of financial need and other factors. The scholarship program illuminated another need in our schools: encouraging independent reading. In his autobiography, Gifted Hands, Dr. Carson wrote about how his life was changed once he embraced reading. For this reason, The Ben Carson Reading Room Project was launched in 2000 to counteract illiteracy, encourage leisure reading in young children, and help all youth grow into stronger students. Since they began, both programs have grown in scope and size. Now, after 15 years of discovering academic promise in young people, the Carson Scholars Fund is thrilled to announce that through the generosity of a W.K. Kellogg Foundation grant we have an opportunity to conduct a research study. This 10-year comprehensive longitudinal evaluation will help measure the impact of the scholarship and reading room programs on students, schools and the community. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation grant will support FERA, an independent research team, who will gather comprehensive data, analyze our impact, and report the findings. We look forward to sharing the impact of our work with our generous donors and stakeholders. Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D., had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home with dire poverty, poor grades, a horrible temper, and low self-esteem appeared to preclude the realization of that dream until his mother, with only a third-grade education, challenged her sons to strive for excellence. Young Ben persevered and today is a full professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and he has directed pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center for over a quarter of a century. He became the inaugural recipient of a professorship dedicated in his name in May, 2008. Dr. Carson holds more than 60 honorary doctorate degrees. In 2001, Dr. Carson was named by CNN and TIME Magazine as one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and scientists. In June, 2008, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the President, which is the highest civilian honor in the land. On February 7, 2009, the movie entitled “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story” premiered on TNT and is based on his memoir. He is president and co-founder of the Carson Scholars Fund, which recognizes young people of all backgrounds for exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishments. The Fund is currently operating in 42 states and the District of Columbia, having awarded more than $ 4.3 million dollars in scholarship funds and honored over 4,300 scholars with their families. Dr. Carson speaks to about 5,000 students annually on the campus of Johns Hopkins during his 75-minute THINK BIG presentations in which he gives a medical slide show and motivational talk discussing his career as a neurosurgeon, other medical careers, and his philosophies. Students attending this presentation come from schools all over the state of Maryland, surrounding states, and even states across the country. This word-of-mouth program has had a profound effect upon those students who have been privileged to attend. Dr. Carson has authored four non-medical books, Gifted Hands, THINK BIG, The Big Picture and Take The Risk: Learning to Identify, Choose, and Live With Acceptable Risk. Dr. Carson has been married for over 30 years to his wife, Candy, and is the father of three sons. And yes, his mother, Sonya Carson, who made all this possible, is alive and well.
