The fourteenth annual Carson Scholars Fund Awards
banquet, emceed by legendary newscaster Sam Donaldson,
was held Sunday, April 11th at Martin’s West in Baltimore.
Over 400 of the best and brightest students were honored.
All met the high standards of academic excellence and
positive humanitarian qualities of a Carson Scholar. Honored
guests included: Tony Dungy, former NFL coach of the
2006 World Champion Indianapolis Colts; James V. Kimsey,
founding CEO and Chairman Emeritus of American Online,
Inc.; and General Charles V. Krulak, 31st Commandant of
Dr. Garth McDonald and his engaging wife Jennifer hosted a
beautiful event at their charming home in Phoenix, MD on
May 10th. These dear friends of longtime Carson Scholar
supporters, Eddie and Sylvia Brown, had more than 50
attendees drinking in the enchanting setting as the sun
slowly sank.
Dr. Ben Carson’s informal talk stretched from the precarious
state of our nation, to opportunities to make a difference to
improve our plight. Candy Carson spoke on the effect of the
Ben Carson Reading Rooms, and how comprehension levels
and test scores have risen as a result of the other “arm” of
the organization. Two Carson Scholars, Danielle Saman
from Sparks Elementary School and Andrew Schaefer from
Hereford Middle School, delivered impressive remarks to
the invited guests.
During the question and answer period a local engineering
firm partner, Fred Mirmiran, challenged everyone with a
very generous match. The match was met, making this one
of our largest fundraising events of the year.
