Day 2: It was just getting light when they got up. It was still a good<br />
distance to the base camp at the Upper Blue Lakes. Leaving their be -<br />
loved VW bus at the little parking place at the Dallas Creek trail head,<br />
the team of five set off on the approach walk.<br />
On the way up to the campsite at the upper of the three glacial<br />
lakes (which really are unbelievably blue), the scenery was aston -<br />
ishing. With so much green at 3570 metres it was sometimes like<br />
being in the uplands rather than the mountains, or it would have<br />
been were it not for the 4000ers with their rugged, cliff-strewn<br />
flanks. At base camp the team discussed objectives for the next few<br />
days. Which of the 4000ers should they climb first? Dallas Peak,<br />
Gil pin Peak or Mount Sneffels? They decided on the latter, rated as<br />
one of the most beautiful mountains in Colorado.<br />
