NEWS & EVENTS European Land Robot Trial (ELROB) 2008 The research team of the L3S Institute for Systems Engineering, Real Time Systems group (RTS) at the Leibniz universität Hannover participated in the European Land Robot Trial (ELROB) 2008. In four different missions, the team’s autonomous robot RTS-HANNA was able to achieve twice the second place and twice the first place, competing against more than 20 international teams. The European Land Robot Trial (ELROB) was organized from June 30th through July 3rd in Hammelburg, Germany. In four challenging, real-world scenarios, more than 20 international teams from academia and industry demonstrated their capabilities in the field of autonomous mobile land robots. The L3S Institute for Systems Engineering team participated in three trials and achieved 2nd Place in the “Transport- Mule” scenario, 2nd Place in the “Autonomous Reconnaissance”. In addition, the team won 1st place in the “Convoy” scenario. In the “Convoy” trial, a group of at least two vehicles were to be moved along a muddy and hilly track limited to a single driver. By following the manual driven leading vehicle autonomously, the team of the RTS was the sole participant able to complete the 10 km track within the allotted time of 60 minutes. On the asphalt part of the trial, a top speed of 35 Km/h was achieved. The L3S Institute for Systems Engineering entered the ELROB 2008 with its brand new robotic platform called RTS-HANNA. The robot is based on an off-the shelf Kawasaki Mule 3010 side-by-side vehicle with diesel engine. Fully street licensed, the vehicle is equipped with a driveby-wire retrofit kit from PARAVAN GmbH which enables manual as well as fully computer control of the vehicle. For autonomous operation the vehicle is equipped with a various sensors, including two 3D-Laserscanners and a DGPS for precise positioning. In the context of the M-ELROB 2008, RTS-HANNA is utilized as a demonstrator for robotic technology that can be adapted to any steer-by-wire platform. Additional infos: www.m-elrob.eu L3S Launches Future Internet Research Seminar Series The L3S Research Center is organizing its new “Future Internet Research Seminar Series” to provide more information on all relevant aspects of the Future Internet and to provide a forum for discussions and collaboration on related issues. The topic “Future Internet” is one of the important federated research themes in the European FP7 IST work program 2009ff, and prominently covered in the FIND/GENI activities sponsored by the NSF as well as in the BMBF IT Strategy 2020. The L3S Research Center is working on various aspects of Future Internet design and applications including: new transmission schemes and network protocols; innovative ways to access and use digital content in digital libraries and multimedia search; integration of information in the Web in the context of the Internet of Things. I3 Research Initiative “Future Internet - Internet, Information & I” is significance and L3S builds upon experiences gained its numerous projects; such as PHAROS, LiWA, LivingKnowledge and UKoLoS. Importantly, competences from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, TIB, RRZN, as well as colleagues from other faculties at the Leibniz University of Hannover combine to realize aspects of this initiative To provide more information on all relevant aspects and to provide a forum for discussions and collaboration on Future Internet related issues, the L3S Research Center is organizing its new “Future Internet Research Seminar Series”. Events in this series will be organized every two to three weeks, from November 2008 to June 2009, providing both an overview as well as detailed information about important building blocks for the Internet of the Future.
