AIR COMPRESSOR SELECTION GUIDE
IN SELECTING YOUR COMPRESSOR, THE FOLLOWING IS SUGGESTED:
A) For a typical Service Department, take the number of service bays and multiply x 2.4 c.f.m./bay to arrive at the amount of c.f.m.
required for the department, e.g.:
12 bays x 2.4 = 28.8 c.f.m.
From the air compressor selection charts, under a c.f.m. @ 175 p.s.i., this could be handled by a 10 hp vertical or horizontal
machine (34.8 c.f.m.).
B) The same requirements are involved in the Body Shop except that the air usage is substantially higher (air buffers, sanders, spray
equipment, etc.). The industry uses 5.5 c.f.m./bay. The calculations are the same, e.g.:
5.5 c.f.m. x 12 body bays = 66 c.f.m. total
The selection would be a 20 hp unit (76.7 c.f.m.).
C) In the event both the Body Shop and Service Department are in one building, it will be necessary to add both the air requirements
together, e.g.:
From A (Service Dept.) 28.8 c.f.m.
From B (Body Shop) 69.6 c.f.m.
Total = 98.4 c.f.m.
This would require a 30 hp unit.
TO PROVIDE THE MOST ACCURATE AIR REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUR APPLICATION,
IT IS SUGGESTED THAT YOU USE THE FOLLOWING CALCULATIONS:
A - Service Bays Number of bays x 2.4 = _______ Total
B - Body Shop Number of bays x 5.5 = _______ Total
C - If all in one building Add together _______ Grand Total
To base compressor selections on just service bays, use calculation A. On just Body Shops, use calculation B. If all in one building,
use calculation C. If the calculation falls between two sizes, then chose the higher hp. When the whole operation is depending on
one compressor, it is recommended that a duplex unit or a double packaged compressor be used. In all cases we strongly suggest a
two-compressor package or a duplex, rather than a single unit.
NOTE: Since water in air lines is damaging to air tools and is especially damaging to car painting operations, it is strongly
recommended that both aftercoolers and compressed air dryers be used.
Duplex air compressors are a unique configuration that lets you alternate automatically between two compressors, or, when required,
operate two compressors simultaneously to deliver double the c.f.m. of a single unit. They are specifically designed to accommodate
additional capacity in peak periods. This system also provides 100% back up in case one compressor is down for maintenance or
repairs.
Rotary screw compressors are an alternative to the reciprocating compressor. Designed for a 100% continuous-duty cycle. Continuous
operation means that the compressor may be sized closer to the actual required capacity (c.f.m.) that is needed. Compressor units
come completely packaged with sound enclosure standard for extremely low noise operation. They have a small footprint and can
be installed right in the work environment eliminating the separate compressor room. There are few moving parts in the compressor,
which reduces maintenance costs. The rotary screw compressor is designed to run 100% of the time and is most efficient when running
continuously.
