Activistas dicen a Albany: pasen
la legislación DREAM
El evento que se llevó a cabo en la
St. Teresa’s Church en Manhattan,
fue organizado por la coalición del
New York State DREAM, una sociedad
diversa de jóvenes, comunidad, trabajo, y
organizaciones religiosas que han estado
abogando por la aprobación de la legislación
New York State DREAM (Desarrollo,
Alivio y Educación para Menores Extranjeros)
ACT para permitir el acceso a la
ayuda a la colegiatura con financiamiento-estatal
para todos los neoyorquinos, independiente
del estatus de inmigración.
Los líderes religiosos y comunitarios
de Nueva York llamaron a la aprobación
del New York State DREAM un imperativo
moral y en el interés público, enfatizando
que empoderando a la juventud para
que tengan éxito en su educación es lo correcto
y ayuda al estado a prosperar—no
solamente económicamente, pero también
mantiene una cultura vibrante de justicia
y oportunidad para todos.
Con la audiencia de la Corte Suprema
esta semana sobre los argumentos del
caso de la ley anti-inmigrante de Arizona,
SB1070, los líderes religiosos y comunitarios

“Dos días antes que la Corte Suprema
escuche argumentos verbales acerca de
la legalidad de la SB 1070, la ley injusta
de inmigración de Arizona, los líderes
religiosos comunitarios han organizado
esta conferencia de prensa para enviar
un mensaje a los legisladores de Albany:
Ustedes tienen una selección moral que
hacer”, dijo Diane Steinman, Directora
de NYS Interfaith Network para Reforma
Migratoria. Pueden pasar la New York
State Dream Act y tomar una posición por
la justicia, compasión y oportunidad para
toda la juventud de Nueva York. O pueden
dejar de actuar, y bloquear el camino al
éxito para algunos en base únicamente al
estatus de inmigración, cruelmente negándoles
la oportunidad de seguir sus sueños
y ayudar a construir la América de mañana.
Por lo tanto le decimos a Albany: hagan
lo correcto. ¡”Pasen el Dream Act”!
Enmarcando el argumento desde ambas
perspectivas la personal y la moral
estaba el Pastor
Omar Almonte de
Central Baptist
Church de Brooklyn:
“Yo recientemente
marché
con inmigrantes
en Alabama para
protestar la ley copiona
SB1070 que
está destruyendo
las vidas y familia
de los inmigrantes
– y estaba asombrado
de cuán importante
seria para
mi propio Estado de Nueva York repudiar
la cruel injusticia de Arizona y de Alabama
pasando la New York State Dream Act,
asi todos los inmigrantes jóvenes tienen la
oportunidad de asistir a la universidad y
seguir sus Sueños”.
La Oficina del Alcalde para Asuntos
del Inmigrante compartió su apoyo por la
legislación New York State DREAM con
líderes religiosos y comunitarios.
“Toda la gente joven debe tener la
oportunidad de seguir su educación post-
secundaria” dijo Fátima Shama, comisionada
para la Oficina del Alcalde para
Asuntos del Inmigrante. “La Administración
Bloomberg apoya que la universidad
sea mas financieramente asequible y en
crear senderos de legislación para los estudiantes
indocumentados. Debemos abrir
senderos para ayudar más a los estudiantes
indocumentados y permitir que ellos
alcancen su potencial, y contribuyan al
crecimiento y vitalidad de la economía de
nuestro estado.
Activists tell Albany: pass DREAM legislation now
The event, held at St. Teresa’s
Church in Manhattan, was
organized by the New York
State DREAM Coalition, a diverse
partnership of youth, community,
labor, and faith organizations that
has been advocating for passage of
New York State DREAM (Development,
Relief, and Education for
Alien Minors) ACT to allow access
to state-funded tuition assistance for
all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration
status.
New York’s faith and community
leaders called passage of New York
State DREAM legislation a moral
imperative and in the public interest,
emphasizing that empowering
youth to succeed in their education
is the right thing to do and helps the
state prosper—not only economi-
cally, but also by upholding a vibrant culture
of justice and opportunity for all.
With the Supreme Court hearing arguments
this week on Arizona’s anti-immigrant
law, SB 1070, New York’s faith
and community leaders maintain that New
York can provide a welcome counterpoint
to Arizona’s divisive and destructive path
by promoting laws that benefit immigrant
communities and serve the common
good.
“Two days before the Supreme Court
hears oral arguments about the legality
of SB 1070, Arizona’s unjust immigration
law, faith community leaders have
organized this press conference to send
a message to Albany lawmakers: You
have a moral choice to make,” said Diane
Steinman, Director, NYS Interfaith Network
for Immigration Reform. “You can
pass the New York State DREAM Act and
take a stand for justice, compassion, and
opportunity for all New York youth. Or
you can fail to act, and block the road to
success for some based solely on immigration
status, cruelly denying them the
chance to follow their dreams and help
build the America of tomorrow. And so
we say to Albany: do the right thing. Pass
the DREAM Act!”
Framing the argument from both a
personal and moral perspective was Pastor
Omar Almonte from Central Baptist
Church in Brooklyn.
“I recently marched with immigrants
in Alabama to protest its SB1070 copycat
law that is destroying immigrant lives
and families,” Pastor Almonte said, “and
I was struck by how important it would
be for my own State of New York to repudiate
the cruel injustice in Arizona and
Alabama by passing the New York State
Congresswoman / Congresista Nydia Velasquez
DREAM Act, so all young immigrants
are given the opportunity to go
to college and follow their dreams.”
The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant
Affairs shared their support for New
York State DREAM legislation with
faith and community leaders.
“All young people should have the
opportunity to pursue postsecondary
education,” said Fatima Shama, commissioner
for the Mayor’s Office of
Immigrant Affairs. “The Bloomberg
administration supports making college
more financially accessible and
creating legalization pathways for
undocumented students. We must
open educational pathways to further
support undocumented students and
allow them to reach their full potential,
and contribute to the growth and
vitality of the economy of our state.”
