1.- EDITORIAL Dear Cracidologists, BULLETIN of the CRACID GROUP - GSG - Vol. 35 – January 2013 As explained in the previous newsletter, the former Cracid Specialist Group is now officially the Cracid Group of the Galliformes Specialist Group (GSG). This responds to the decision of the IUCN to integrate the four Specialists Groups working with Galliformes into a single Galliformes Specialist Group to reduce duplication and forming a stronger and more efficient group. In this bulleting Peter Garson and Ilse Storch, cochairs of the GSG, send us an official welcome from the group. We keep working to enhance the communication among the group and to provide access to useful information. The electronic discussion group and the virtual library are now up and running (see the News section). Next will be to upgrade the content of our webpage and make it available in the three languages. The newsletter, now to be published in January and July, will continue to see changes; with this number we start featuring a different picture in the cover, please submit your best pics. The Cracid Group priority for 2013 will be to work on a new Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan for all Cracids. The last plan was published in 2006, and a new plan is urgently needed to identify and coordinate programs for the management of cracids throughout their range. This document will need a significant effort from the Cracidologist community, and will be facilitated by the GSG. We are receiving the New Year with the Sira Curassow (Pauxi koepckeae), from Peru’s Sira Mountains, being recognized as a full species and not a subspecies, as previously considered. During 2013 we are also expecting a significant increase in Cracid research. As never before, together the increasing of interest in may countries in the Americas, we also have well-established research groups distributed in many universities, museums, zoos and breeding centers. Most of them are now members of this CG and will or are working in constant communication. Our object of study are being benefited from an easier and faster exchange of information, including critical materials such tissue and blood samples, for example, which can be a better guide for ex-situ management. However, the need for field information about the population status for most of species continues to be critical for cracid conservation, as well the loss of their habitats. The need of reintroduction programs are also important, and all these challenges are facing us in 2013. Best wishes for the New Year.
