Pauxi koepckeae recognized as new species BULLETIN of the CRACID GROUP - GSG - Vol. 35 – January 2013 SACC (South American Classification Committee of AOU) has officially recognized the Sira Curassow (Pauxi koepckeae) as a full species, per the recommendation of Gastañaga et al. (http://www.hmns.org/files/SiraCurassow.pdf). There are now 52 species of Cracids, and both Peru and Bolivia each have their own endemic curassow (Pauxi koepckeae in Peru and P. unicornis in Bolivia). 2.2. Training workshop on the ex situ breeding of Blue-billed Curassow Crax alberti and discussion forum on the conservation of the species. Participation included various zoos of the Colombian Association of Zoos, Aquariums and Allied interested in the conservation program for the species, and Christopher Holmes (Houston Zoo) and Michael Taylor (White Oak Conservation Center) who made theoretical training in technical captive management of the species. In addition, experiences were shared between Colombian zoos. It was an opportunity for meeting between the professionals, NGOs and government agencies who have worked with the species. Final thoughts include: o Colombian zoos have the technical capacity and the willingness to develop successful experiences in managing and achieving success at captive breeding. o Zoos need to implement management methodologies and procedures consistently, and dynamically evaluate their results. o There is need to increase the general knowledge about artificial incubation procedures and to improve the technical aspects of hatchery operation. o It is important to develop management protocols for rearing chicks for release, to ensure the viability of this strategy. o It is vital to include research that improves our understanding of the genetic variability of the population both in situ and ex situ o It is necessary to strengthen cooperation with foreign institutions that possess the species in their collections, to share lessons learned o The action plan must include as a line of action the captive management aspect, considering the strength that zoos have with their experience on technical and management capacity. o The effectiveness of the conservation plan will result of collaboration between research institutions in situ, zoos, institutions and management control of natural resources and civil society. 5
