LOTS TO CELEBRATE<br />

Solo se pueden entender las fiestas de la <strong>Safor</strong> conociendo su historia.<br />

Es necesario retroceder, al menos, hasta la fundación del<br />

Reino de Valencia por Jaume I (siglo xiii). Los conquistadores impusieron<br />

sus nuevas costumbres a los moriscos que aportaban, por<br />

su parte, el aspecto profano, como su afición por la pólvora. Así el<br />

fervor religioso, las tradiciones y costumbres se entremezclaron<br />

—también con las generaciones siguientes— hasta conseguir una<br />

multiculturalidad que ha moldeado la singularidad festiva de esta<br />

tierra.<br />

Los ‘porrats’<br />

Es una feria pequeña que se celebra junto a una iglesia o ermita donde se<br />

venera la imagen de un santo, y en la que se venden productos artesana-<br />

The only way to fully understand the fiestas in La <strong>Safor</strong> is to get to know<br />

their history. You need to go back in time to at least the founding of the<br />

imposed new customs on the moriscos which involved a certain profanity<br />

– such as their passion for gunpowder. Like this, religious fervour,<br />

traditions and customs intermingled, and continued to do so in subsequent<br />

generations, until it resulted in a multicultural society that has<br />

made the fiestas of this part of the world highly unique.<br />

Porrats<br />

These are small Mediaeval-style fairs held next to a church where the image of<br />

a saint is worshipped and arts, crafts and confectionary are sold. These days,<br />

the porrat is also synonymous with cultural and social activities, reliving history<br />

and reviving ancient customs and traditions. A few years ago the Porrat Route
