LOTS TO CELEBRATE
Solo se pueden entender las fiestas de la Safor conociendo su historia.
Es necesario retroceder, al menos, hasta la fundación del
Reino de Valencia por Jaume I (siglo xiii). Los conquistadores impusieron
sus nuevas costumbres a los moriscos que aportaban, por
su parte, el aspecto profano, como su afición por la pólvora. Así el
fervor religioso, las tradiciones y costumbres se entremezclaron
—también con las generaciones siguientes— hasta conseguir una
multiculturalidad que ha moldeado la singularidad festiva de esta
tierra.
Los ‘porrats’
Es una feria pequeña que se celebra junto a una iglesia o ermita donde se
venera la imagen de un santo, y en la que se venden productos artesana-

These are small Mediaeval-style fairs held next to a church where the image of
a saint is worshipped and arts, crafts and confectionary are sold. These days,
