PATRIMONIO ARTÍSTICO
LA CULTURA DE LOS SENTIDOS
ARTISTIC HERITAGE
CULTURE OF THE SENSES
As Oliva-born writer and poet Enric Sòria defined it, culture is “a continual
struggle in favour of life, an effort to give it back its beauty
and meaning; fair and deserving expression, well-cooked dishes, books
that teach you something, delight you or make you think, wines that
make you happy, music that moves you, wisely-composed and ordered
images, friendliness, all that helps us live, reason, feel and enjoy ourselves
as people.”
‘Culture’ understood in this sense, as something both broad and personal,
is there because people have created it – from the earliest settlers in these
lands who hid their presence in unexpectedly-found archaeological digs, below
the surface in the countryside and under street corners, on the sides of
mountains that bear testimony to each and every stone of that remains of a
splendid past manifested in the gilt-edged Renaissance halls where the echo
still rings out of a name that is universally admired and cursed – in equal measure
– a name that created a dynasty of fathers, warriors and saints, femmes
fatales and extraordinary women...
And with an air that carries the scent of rosemary and salt, this blend of
cultures has gradually marked the cheerful and welcoming character of the
people in this area. Wherever you look, others have already cast their eyes
and turned the sounds into music, the colours into art, the sensations into
words...
a descifrar estilos y épocas.
There’s no need to a history expert: just let yourself be led by the streets
that invite you to uncover the secrets of bygone eras; memories recovered
with either a strikingly clear or just a hazy recollection, but alive nonetheless.
We know that the Muslims were present in seven castles: the Marinyén
(Benifairó), Bairén (Gandia), Borró (Ròtova), Vilella (Almiserà), Palma (Palma
de Gandia), Vilallonga (Villalonga) and Rebollet (la Font d’En Carròs) and all
along the tortuous C/ La Hoz in Oliva. There are also many churches and chapels
that were built on top of old mosques, like Sant Roc (Oliva), Sant Miquel
(Palma de Gandia) and the Collegiate in Gandia. Or those that remained intact
but were converted to Christian churches, like the La Xara mosque in Simat
de la Valldigna.
Together with the first Catalán-Aragonese repopulators, La Safor acquired
sombre, functional architecture, typical of Catalán Gothic and reflected in the

Cotalba Monastery (1388) in Alfauir, part of the Borgia palace in Gandia (14th
century), the Collegiate Church of Gandia (14th-16th centuries), the 15th-century
Sant Marc Hospital and Santa Clara convent (1429) in Gandia.
The palaces of Castellonet de la Conquesta, Gandia, Oliva and Beniarjó; some
of the add-ons to the monasteries of Cotalba and the Valldigna and Sant Roc
church in Oliva (1591), plus its abbey; the churches of Sant Joan Evangelista in
Benifairó; Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Alfauir; Nuestra Señora de Loreto in
Ador; Sant Antoni de Pàdua in Xeresa, and the attractive town hall n Potries
are an example of Renaissance influence in religious and civil architecture of
La Safor.
The majestic Galería Dorada (Golden Gallery) of the Ducal Palace of the Borgias
in Gandia is a real jewel in the crown of the Baroque era in this area.
Much more sombre, but no less striking is Gandia’s first university. The statues
at the entrance to the Escuelas Pías building are of the most illustrious
members of the Borja family.

It is only the façades of the recently-restored Serrano Theatre and the Royalty
cinema in Gandia that reflect the discreet step towards modernism during the
first half of the 20th century.
The Borgias (or Borjas) – a surname with character
The commemoration, in 2010, of the fifth centenary of the birth of San Francisco
de Borja marks a before and after in the revival of Borgia heritage in
Gandia and La Safor. Despite which, the traces left behind by the Valencian
family with the greatest protection in universal history, are still very present
and have been for years in the collective memory of the people of La Safor.
Three members of the dynasty in particular – Alfonso de Borja (Pope Calixte
III, 1456-1458), his nephew Rodrigo de Borja, better known as the pontiff Alessandro
VI (1492-1503), and finally, the patron saint of Gandia, San Francisco
de Borja (1510-1572), not forgetting legendary characters like Alessandro VI’s
children – Lucrecia and Cesar Borja.

Literature with letters of gold
Beniopa-born writer Josep Piera commented that “chance, or the accumulation
of favourable factors mean Gandia and La Safor, famous for housing the
Ducal court of the Borjas, are also responsible for three great names from
Spain’s Golden Age of literature (15th century): poet Ausiàs March; his brother-in-law
Joanot Martorell, author of Tirant lo Blanc, which was, according to
Cervantes, ‘the best book in the world’ – and the poet Joan Roís de Corella.
“Although, later, further names of great prestige were added to the list, like
Francisco de Borja and the illustrated Gregorio Mayans, the way created by
these three is indelible.”
Josep Piera, Ignasi Mora, Joan M. Monjo, Ferran Cremades, Rafa Gomar,
With this legacy, the writing was on the wall that more would follow. In 1932,
one of the most respected poets in the Spanish language was born. A member
of the Generation of 50, Francisco Brines has received some of the most prestigious
awards in this country, like the National Prize in Spanish Humanities
(1999). In 2001 he was elected member of the Real Academia Española de la
Lengua (Royal Spanish Academy of Language).
The 1960s was a key era for literature. Gandia and La Safor have been, since
the transition to democracy, a focal point for literature in Valencian cultural
context. Writers like Josep Piera, Ignasi Mora, Joan M. Monjo, Ferran Cremades,
Rafa Gomar, Àngels Moreno, Enric Sòria, Joan Navarro, Joan E. Pellicer,
Ferran García Oliver, Teresa Pasqual and many others are ambassadors of La
Safor wherever they go.
Maria Josep Escrivà, Josep Lluís Roig, Àngels Gregori, José V. Sala, Maite Insa
and others represent the latest batch of La Safor-born writers who appear to
be unstoppable._
and later into a marsh. Due to this, it reveals a uniform extension of paddy
fields with numerous pockets of clean water that are crossed by a network
of ancient canals. It is within the nature reserve that the rivers Bullent and
Racons start. The quality of the water also allows populations of invertebrates
like shrimps and petxinots. Additionally, the marshland is the main part of the
Valencian territory where the organic rice varieties of Pegonil and Bombón are
grown. Near the nature reserve you will find the Font Salada, a natural spring
of thermal waters said to have curative properties that are kind to the skin.
The woody landscape is mainly formed by different species of pines and
this area also has a wealth of fascinating fauna, such as the mountain cat,
golden eagle, owls and the Parmacella (a type of air-breathing land-slug) from
the Mondúver massif and its nearby ravines.
Also worthy of mention is the highly valuable archaeological heritage in the
area – the Parpalló and Garrofer caves. The first of these is a major European
Paleolithic dig and great example of art from the era – more than 5,000 pieces
of sculpture that cover every stage of the high Paleolithic period have been
found there.
The next destination is Xeraco beach, which also holds the prestigious blue
setting over the mouth of the river Vaca – a truly exceptional scene. For the
more adventurous, the activity that is all the rage in Xeraco at the moment
is a cross between surfing and paragliding, known as fly-surfing. And now
ply demonstrated by its prestigious stamps, ISO-9001; ISO-14001; the ‘Q’ for
quality, and the EMAS award. The Playa del Nord in Gandia is three kilometres
long and 85 metres wide, a vast area that guarantees the comfort of all bathers.
In the extreme north is the windsurfing school and in the extreme south,
the leisure port. We highly recommend you take a stroll along the ‘arm’ of the
port at sundown to contemplate the immensity of the sea at the foot of the
lighthouse. Another possibility is to continue along past the port to the yacht
school, a bit further along, to learn a bit about this exciting sport. Gandia’s
range of beaches finally includes Venècia and Rafalcaïd, two smaller beaches
of fine sand and waters ideal for bathing.
The next stop on your journey is Daimús, with its two beaches – Pedregals
and Playa de Daimús. The latter also has a blue flag and is a tranquil, peaceful
family holiday destination and, of course, of top quality.
plenty of options to spend the perfect holiday. This effort is proving to be
FIESTAS
MUCHO QUE CELEBRAR
FESTIVALS
LOTS TO CELEBRATE
The only way to fully understand the fiestas in La Safor is to get to know
their history. You need to go back in time to at least the founding of the
Kingdom of Valencia by King Jaume I (13th century). The ethnic cleansers
imposed new customs on the moriscos which involved a certain profanity
– such as their passion for gunpowder. Like this, religious fervour,
traditions and customs intermingled, and continued to do so in subsequent
generations, until it resulted in a multicultural society that has
made the fiestas of this part of the world highly unique.
Porrats
These are small Mediaeval-style fairs held next to a church where the image of
a saint is worshipped and arts, crafts and confectionary are sold. These days,
the porrat is also synonymous with cultural and social activities, reliving history
and reviving ancient customs and traditions. A few years ago the Porrat Route

months, Tavernes and L’Alqueria.
Fiestas with fire
Since time immemorial, lighting ritual bonfires has been frequent during certain
festivities and particularly those marking changes in seasons. The Saint
Anthony fires (in Ròtova and Simat) signify the days getting longer; the Fallas
celebrate the arrival of spring, and the San Juan (Saint John) bonfires, the summer
solstice.
The Fallas are modern festivals par excellence and most symbolic of La Safor.
They start with two events to call the fiesta-goers together, the crida and the
44 | The Guide | La Guía
Other significant acts are the Plantà, the offering of flowers to the Virgin,
the San José (Saint Joseph) procession and the Cremà, when the statues are
burnt down.
Unique to Gandia is the Bateig, where the mayor and the Falla queen ‘adopt’ a
baby who was born nearest to the start of the festival.
On San Juan night (June 23-24) many towns have public meals in the street,
eating cocas (mini-pizzas) with tuna and espencat. Next, a bonfire is made with
old furniture and people dance and sing round it and leap over the flames for
good luck and prosperity.
The festival has seen a revival lately, especially in coastal areas, where as well
as lighting fires on the beach and jumping over waves, open-air dances and
torchlight displays are held.
also the seafaring processions in the Grau de Gandia, with fishing boats escorting
different interpretations of the Virgin – the Mare de Déu Blanqueta and Mare
de Déu del Carme.
Religious festivals
In addition to patron saint festivals, the biggest religious celebrations are
Christmas and Easter, or Holy Week. In Gandia, midnight mass has undergone a
revival of its traditions, like the hymn El Canto de la Sibila, which has been sung
since 1979 in the Santa Anna chapel. This is a song of the Prophets dating back
to the 15th century. The sibilas were virgin maids inspired by the gods who announced
the final judgment and the arrival of Jesus Christ.
The biggest Holy Week, or Semana Santa, celebrations take place in Gandia,
Oliva: the living Vía Crucis in Santa Anna (Gandia), or the Visitatio Sepulchri,
a religious play involving San Francisco de Borja. In Oliva, the high point is the
climbing of the Calvary to Santa Anna castle.
Unique fiestas
The Fira i Festes in Gandia is opened in early October by the comical figure, the
Tío de la Porra. A humorous parade through the town accompanied by drums,
children are dragged out of school to join in the festival. Gandia’s streets are
filled with all types of activities, including fairground rides, huge concerts and
first-class dramatic plays. On April 25 the Sant Marc fiesta is held in Beniarjó
involving a series of traditions and rituals concerning the protection of the harvest.
The main act is the Dance of the Flag, in which the flag-bearer carries the
insignia throughout the village then dances in the square, making intricate filigree-type
movements.
Other unique celebrations include the Fanalets procession in Palmera and Miramar,
where children carry a decorated watermelon with a candle inside it; the
Burial of the Dog in Simat, where a dog made of rags is buried to mark the end
of the festival; the amateur dramatic production of the Serp in Xeraco; the bearing
of the image of Saint Joseph in Ador, where the Tío de la Porra also makes
an appearance.

Spectacular fiestas
The Moors and Christians, especially in Oliva, is one of the most traditional and
popular festivals as well as being an international tourist attraction.
It takes place on the third weekend in July and mock battles where they attempt
to re-conquer the town are held, with parades where each army displays its
flamboyant, spectacular costumes with as much pomp as possible. Acts like
Putxero Night deserve special mention, where this stewed meat dish is eaten in
the streets and the Disembarking of the Moors, at dawn on Mitja Galta beach.
Following an arduous battle with bows and arrows, the Moorish troops conquer
the town. The castle will then be re-conquered by the Christian soldiers. The
EL ARTE CULINARIO DE LA SAFOR
CUISINE
THE CULINARY ART OF THE SAFOR
Texto: ANTONIO VERGARA
Rice, cocas (mini-pizzas), figatells (faggots), stuffed peppers, salted meat and
fish, eel stew, the bullit (unique to the area), the farinetes (dough-balls), blat
picat (from Villalonga), the fideuà (like seafood paella made with macaroni – a
dish full of anecdotes about when it originated from), the espencat (peppers,
tomatoes and aubergines, roasted, peeled and served cold) and other recipes
that, if they haven’t always been known as traditionally from La Safor are at
least deep-rooted here and considered its culinary backbone.
The singer Raimon put one of Ausiàs March’s poems to music (a poet born in
Gandia in 1397 or 1400, who died in 1459). This verse, bullirà el mar com la
cassola en forn (‘the sea will boil like a pan in the oven’) is very well known. In
fact, one of the most popular dishes in the area is arroz al horno (oven-baked
a gas o eléctrico.
rice) which should indeed boil, as though it was in March’s metaphorical sea.
There are many different oven-baked rices. All you need is to buy the rice and
own an oven, either gas or electric. When homes did not have ovens, the mise
en place of this dish was prepared at home and the clay pan taken to the kiln
at the local bakery to cook. Hence the name. The variations on the theme
involve adding chickpeas, pork ribs, raisins and pine-nuts, tomato, fresh or
salted tuna, broad beans, pork fat and black pudding with onion, pigs’ trotters
or large meatballs, and a long list of other ingredients. In some cases, arroz al
horno, be it from La Safor or not, comes in a dry version with beans and turnip
– arròs amb fesols i naps.
There is nothing so easy nor so difficult to cook as this dish. For example,
if one day we feel like eating something with rice in it at home, but had not
planned anything, we open the fridge and take a look at what is in it, and
in the cupboards. As long as there is some tomato, onion, some vegetable
^ Coques
or another, chicken, beans, a couple of decent sausages, not much more is
needed to whip up a rice dish, either dry, in paella format or in stock. Cooking
rice allows this and other forms of improvising – in Xeresa, a town of 2,000
inhabitants, the local dish is arròs d’estiu (‘summer rice’) made with stock and
different types of beans, rabbit, chicken and pork ribs.
La Safor is one of the districts where cocas, a miniature variation on the pizza,
are famous, as they are in the Marina Alta. Sadly, in mainstream restaurants
– with few exceptions – they do not hold the status they deserve and are unfortunately
relegated to bar snacks (highly-praised are these establishments
that are the guardians of the coca) rather than restaurant menus. But without
being at all biased, we much prefer cocas to pizzas. Neither would we get into
arguments about whether La Safor inhabitants exported cocas to Naples and
Sicily when the Crown of Aragón took over the kingdom of Naples, or whether
it was the other way round. Why? Because as long as there is flour, water, oil
and salt, the Mothers of All Cocas and Pizzas, there will be both cocas and
pizzas; the products added to them – meat, vegetable or dairy products – do
not alter the nature of this simple and tasty dish.
Lorenzo Millo wrote: “Cocas, and coquetes, pasties and pies are technically
bakery products of worldwide renown, at least in European countries, North
Africa and all over America.” In summary, according to the old Valencian refrain,
tot ix de la mateixa pasterada (‘everything comes from the same dough’).

picados, piñones y especias a discreción.
In this way, from the pasterada or dough, the ingenuity and the needs of the
people meant that cocas, coquetes, coques escaldades, fried cocas and cocas
del forat, coques mintxos and many more, acquired as many ingredients as
they could. The secret is in the dough. With coques escaldades, for example,
fantasy can go as far as you let it. They can be filled with almost anything, with
a huge variety of products.
Also in La Safor, figatells (faggots) enjoy great notoriety. Their official ingre-

dients are liver and lean minced pork, pine-nuts and the discreet addition of
spices. The dough is wrapped in the tissue from the inside of the pig’s stomach
which gives it a more or less oval shape. They are fried, grilled or barbecued.
Figatells, which are always succulent, are also seen in other parts of
the world under different names – like in Aragón where they are known as
fardeles, or on the island of Corsica where they are called figatello or, in the
plural, figatelli, and where they are also very typical.
Finally, let’s look at a seafood dish (in Miramar, there is also a delicious and
ancient recipe for stuffed octopus which is similar to the putxero) and the fi-

deuà, whose recipe, like that of paella, continues to be controversial. There is
also dispute over who invented it. Us, being neutral, like Pontius Pilate, would
simply describe it as (because it seems to be at first glance) very similar to a
seafood paella but with macaroni instead of rice. And as for who invented it
– well, none of us knows who thought of fabada asturiana, chicken and rabbit
paella, steak tartare, garlic soup or the butifarra sausage with mongetes, okra
with pears, gazpacho andaluz or Bellavista lobster. In any case, the debate is
none of our concern._

TRAS LAS HUELLAS DE LOS BORJA EN VALENCIA
THE BORGIAS ROUTE
IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE BORGIAS IN VALENCIA
Por SANTIAGO LA PARRA LÓPEZ (Escuela Politécnica Superior de Gandía-UPV)
By Santiago La Parra López Gandia Polytechnic University
The name Borja has gone down in history, in its Italian format Borgia,
as a synonym of scandal and depravation. A large part of this dark
legend, or at least the diffusion of it, can be blamed on the Romantics,
with Victor Hugo at the head of the movement. We believe that not all
the sins attributed to the Borjas are fruit of legend, neither is their
history entirely dark, but here we will simply follow the footsteps of
these universal characters who started their historical saga in the
county of La Costera and wanted to return to their roots, in Gandia,
to offer sainthood to the counter-reform after having governed the
Catholic church twice over.
Acompañó a Alfonso El Magnánimo
The Canals of Alfonso de Borja (Pope Calixto III)
Our journey starts in Canals, at the foot of the only remaining trace of the
popular tradition known as the Borja Palace. An imposing tower rises up opposite
the Santa Cruz chapel where the Final Judgment altarpiece, attributed
to the anonymous ‘Borbotó Master’ is preserved. This is part of one of those
altarpieces of such popular souls as El Quinientos – commissioned by Rodrigo
de Borja-Llansol y Montecada (nephew and grandson of Pope Alexander VI,
Lord of the Baronies of Castellnou, Anna and Villalonga) who appears on his
knees next to the Virgin Mary.
It is taken for granted that Alfonso de Borja was born in Canals, on December
31, 1378 and that it was he who would take the family name from this humble
village of the new Kingdom of Valencia to the highest summit of the Catholic
Church, rebranding it in Italian – Borgia – so that in the language of Dante
it sounded just the same as it did in the language of Ausiàs March. Alfonso
based his success on his solid legal training. His contribution to the happy solution
of the Western Schism earned him the nomination of Bishop of Valencia
(1429) making him the first Valencian to achieve this much-coveted title.
He accompanied Alfonso the Magnificent during the Naples Conquest but
this close friendship broke-up because the cleric defended the supremacy of
italianos: Adriano VI y Juan Pablo II.
Pontifical authority over that of the Monarchy. In 1444, Eugenio IV named him
Cardinal and on April 8, 1455, he was elected Pope, under the name of Calixto
III, during a meeting called after the death of Nicholas V.
This first Papal election of a Borja was marked by the fall of Constantinople
in the power of the Turks (1453). They say the Pope even went as far as to
pawn his own crockery to raise funds to finance the crusade. All these efforts
were finally compensated with the triumph of the Papal army during the battle
of Belgrade (1456) which momentarily halted the advance of Turkish forces
through Europe. The news of this unpredictable victory reached the Vatican
on August 6 and, to celebrate it, the Pope institutionalised that day as the
Festival of Transfiguration and the prayer of Angelus. He could never have
imagined, of course, that on that same day, two years later, he would meet

his death. On April 23, 1456, he had signed the contract for the construction
of Budapest Cathedral, which has been considered a kind of foundation act
of the Hungarian capital.
In the Vatican of Calixto III, one started to hear conversations in valenciano,
since the new pope turned to his friends, relatives and countrymen to be able
to govern such a complex institute as the Catholic Church, particularly as he
was a ‘foreigner’ (that is, non-Italian). This unique situation would continue,
before half a century had passed, with the Papal election of his nephew Rodrigo
who became Pope Alexander VI on August 11, 1492. During the next
five hundred years after the death of the second Borja pope, between 1503
and 2003, there have only ever been two other non-Italian popes: the Dutch
Adrian VI and Polish John Paul II.
The Játiva of Rodrigo de Borja (Pope Alexander VI)
Rodrigo was born in Xàtiva on January 1, 1431 and he was baptised at Saint
Peter’s Church. He was son of Isabel de Borja (sister of Calixto III) and Jofré
de Borja, Lord of the small farmstead of Atzueva. An orphan after his father’s
death when he was ten, Rodrigo’s uncle took him to Bologna to study and as
soon as Alfonso de Borja became Calixto III, Rodrigo became a doctor of law,
a Cardinal and finally, elected Pope during that annus mirabilis of 1492. Apart
from his completely exceptional character, the surprising election of a second
Borja as pope in less than fifty years can be explained by taking into account
that Rodrigo had accumulated various titles and this made him one of the
richest Cardinals in the district; and, secondly, because from his uncle’s Papal
seat he had been carrying out the role of vice-chancellor of the Church, which
meant he knew better than anyone how to find his way around the Vatican and
he controlled the resorts of bureaucracy.
Historical irony dictated that Isabel de Borja wanted – and, naturally, got her
wish – the descendants of her daughter Juana (married to Pedro G. Llansol of
Romaní, Lord of Villalonga and the only one who had children) to change the
order of their surnames so as not to lose the title of Borja. What this feisty
woman could not have imagined at the time was that her son Rodrigo, despite
being a man of the Church, would make this universal but using the
Italianised spelling of Borgia; because Rodrigo, in effect, admitted paternity
of nine children: Pedro Luis (first Duke of Gandia), Jerónima, and Isabel, of
one or several women – we do not know for sure; then with Vannoza Cattanei
he fathered the most famous children, César, Juan (second Duke of Gandia),
Lucrecia and Jofré; next came Juan, over whom hung the suspicion of incest
(which is true, although never proven), and finally, Rodrigo, who was born
shortly after the death of his father.
The traces of the Borgias that most stand out and which we can still find today,
strolling through Xàtiva, are the following:
THE COLLEGIATE: Originally constructed on the site of a mosque, the imposing
temple of today is not the one that the Borjas knew, since it was since
completely reconstructed – starting from 1596. Its main doorway is flanked
by bronze sculptures of both Borja popes, the work of sculptor Octavio Vicent
(1962) and at the peak is the stone that commemorates the foundation of
the Chapel of the Virgin of the Fevers by Francisco de Borja and Navarro de
Alpicat, bishop of Teano, Pontifical treasurer and president of the Chamber
of the Apostles.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the Chapel of Santa Ana (owned by the
Borja family) disappeared. It was originally built by Alfonso de Borja, and
some of the remains of it are held in the Almodí Museum.
In the Collegiate Museum, the magnificent Santa Ana altarpiece is well-conserved.
This is better known through the name of Alfonso de Borja, his sponsors
in 1452 (who appear in portrait beside him), the work of Pere Reixach
and not Jacomart as we used to believe. Here, a chalice of gilded silver and

enamel is also kept, and a lignum crucis, both donated by Calixto III, as well as
a wax seal of Alexander VI. It is not displayed here, but this Pope also donated
the impressive casket, or ostensorium that dates back to the end of the 15th
century.
Although the lintel of the so-named Casa del Arcediano (Ardiacà House) near
the Collegiate features three Borja coats of arms, the building has no known
relation to the family.
In the stately street of Montcada, near the modern-day Mercantile Circle, you
will find the house of Pedro Luis de Borja, first Duke of Gandia, acquired in
1487 and of which today only the magnificent white marble coat of arms remains,
now the property of the Bellús family. In one of the arch tips of the
hours of the morning of September 3, 1562, by express order of King Felipe II,
accused of the murder of the bastard son of the Duke of Segorbe.
The Gandia of San Francisco de Borja
In 1485, the Cardinal Rodrigo de Borja bought Gandia for his eldest son, Pedro
Luis, attracted as he was by the lucrative nature of such an exotic crop as the
sugar cane, exported from here to the Americas and would form the basis of
the prosperous Duchy of Gandia’s wealth. The Borja family maintained itself
at the head of this dominion, expanding it with successive purchases until the
middle of the 18th century. In 1740, the 11th Duke, Luis Ignacio, died without
leaving any children, and he was succeeded by his sister Mariana, who died in
1748, likewise with no successors. At this point the Duchy was firstly inherited
by the Pimentels (Duke and Duchess of Benavente) and shortly afterwards by
the Téllez-Girón family (Duke and Duchess of Osuna) who still, today, hold the
honorary title of Duke and Duchess of Gandia. The Borja Duchy (1485-1748)’s
period of splendour was between the reign of María Enríquez (1497-1511) and
the governing of her grandson Francisco, the Holy Duke and fourth in the dynasty
(1543-1550).
THE CITY WALLS OF GANDIA: Saint Francisco de Borja took possession of the
Duchy of Gandia in May 1543 and in July, began the construction of a new
walled area to protect the Vilanova, or new town, an urban conglomeration
bordered by the street, C/ Duc Carles de Borja, and its parallel, C/ Sant Francesc
de Borja. The only witness to this new urban ‘belt’, which was pulled
down in 1881, is the popular Torreó del Pi, a tower with a tree on top.
THE COLLEGIATE OF SANTA MARÍA: The parish church of the Assumption
was built on the level of the Collegiate by order of Alexander VI on October
26, 1499, at the request of his daughter-in-law, the reigning duchess María
Enríquez. It was constructed in what is now the Plaza de la Constitución, formerly
Comprising just one room, two lateral chapels joined to its walls, it constitutes
a magnificent example of the Gothic architecture diffused by the Christian
conquerors of the new Kingdom of Valencia, characterised by its practical
nature as a parish temple and a sobriety that retains vestiges – evident in the
capitals of its columns – of its original austerity, the stamp of the Cistercian
monks of the neighbouring Santa María de la Valldigna monastery.
The current apse of the Collegiate is, sadly, a poor, and rushed, reconstruction,
the original having been destroyed during the Civil War. This is followed
by the section built during the time of the Royal Duke and Duchess (1399-
1424), which goes as far as the Santa María portal or the gateway to the market,
the work of Nicolás Esteve and the Llobet family (father and children) and
in which the arches decorated with musical angels and the gables with the
image of the Virgin Mary are particularly striking. From this doorway through
to that of the Apostles, at the foot of the temple, is the part that was finished
under María Enríquez’s reign.

The reigning duchess expanded the dominion by buying the Barony of Realenco
capacity for production), contributed to the healthy public funds that helped
to turn Gandia into an attractive place for the immigration of new liegemen,
promoted the colonisation of the wetlands and finished the construction of
the parish temple. For these works, no expense was spared and she employed
the most prestigious artists of the time, starting with the great master Pere
and finishing with Paolo da Sanleocadio (the Italian artist who painted
the images on the apse of Valencia cathedral). That this pious woman opened
come of age and was old enough to govern, she entered the convent of Santa
Clara in Gandia, where her only daughter Isabel, aunt of San Francisco de
Borja, had been waiting for her since the previous year. The original bell-tower
was destroyed by earthquakes in 1598 and 1599, and the modern-day version
was built in the mid-18th century.
SANTA CLARA CONVENT: Despite Paolo da Sanleocadio having carried out
the lion’s share of his works in Gandia, all that remains of them today are two
of his altarpieces, both in the church of this convent, the access to which is
restricted.
The monastery was initially founded in 1423 by Violante, daughter of the Royal
Duke Alfonso of Aragón (Alfons el Vell) and once again half a century later
by a group of Coletina nuns (nuns who observe their faith very strictly) who
had come from the French convent of Lezignan. This was a heavily-frequented
venue by the Borjas, often visited by girls of the Ducal family, since it was
cheaper to make them into nuns than to marry them off with someone of their
superior lineage.
SAN ROQUE CONVENT: The Gandia Convent of San Roque was founded by
Carlos de Borja, fifth Duke of Gandia, in 1588 although it was not until 1591
that the first Franciscan ‘Alcantarino’ monks (followers of Saint Peter of Alcántara,
who encouraged the order to return to man’s original state of poverty)
entered the convent. The façade of the church retains the marble coat of arms
of its founder, his wife Magdalena Centelles, heir to the family of Counts of
Oliva. This is where the legendary Andrés Hibernón (Murcia 1534 – Gandia
April 17, 1602) lived and died. Hibernón was beatified by Pope Pío VI on May
13, 1791, and enjoyed great fervour among the people of Gandia.
SAN MARCOS HOSPITAL: Although the specifics of its founding is not known, it
is very probably that the origins of this sanatorium date back to the end of the
13th century and, despite its many financial struggles, it kept its doors open
until 1974. Mediaeval hospitals only attended to the poorest of citizens – beg-
gars, tramps and street urchin children, with those suffering from contagious
illnesses being denied entry. The mother of San Francisco, Juana of Aragón,
expanded the old San Marcos Hospital, which would later take the name of
the fourth Duke, Francisco de Borja, the patron saint of Gandia. After years of
neglect, was restored as the Gandia Archaeological Museum (MAGA).
GANDIA UNIVERSITY (1549-1772): In 1546, San Francisco de Borja founded
the Saint Sebastián school, situated in the outer walls of the hermitage, which
would be the first of the Company of Jesuits that permitted free access (for
children who did not wish to follow an ecclesiastical career path). With the
building not yet finished, Francisco de Borja managed to obtain from his good
friend Paolo III the Papal Bull, or charter, to turn the school into a university
in 1549, being the first in the world to be run by the brand-new Company of
Jesuits. Such illustrious characters as the Duke himself passed through these
halls of academia, as well as Baltasar Gracián, Pope Juan Andrés, the botanist

Antonio José Cavanilles and the Hebrew scholar Pérez Bayer. It finally closed
its doors in 1772. Since 1807, this building, which would later be used for such
incompatible functions as a prison, has housed Escolapian fathers – members
of the Escolapian religious order – and later, the UNED, the distance-learning
university. In front of its main façade are five statues of members of the Borja
family: the two Borja popes, César, Lucrecia and San Francisco.
October 28, 1510, he lived here until his hurried departure on July 25, 1521,
when he was forced to flee the Germanía troops. He completed his education
in the house of the Archbishop of Zaragoza, his maternal uncle. In 1528, he
was sent to the Court where he would establish a close friendship with King
Carlos I, for whom he would later be designated executor, and the Empress
Isabel of Portugal. In 1529, Francisco married Leonor de Castro, also Portuguese,
and had eight children with her.
In 1539, after presiding over the funeral of the Empress in Granada, he left for
Barcelona where he became Viceroy of Cataluña. His governing of the principality
stood out for his implacable persecution of bandits, and a policy of
defensive public works, which was not always very well received by his contemporaries.
In the city of Barcelona he got to know the first fathers, Araoz
and Fabro, of the recently-founded Company of Jesuits. In 1543, he inherited
the Duchy of Gandia, which he governed until 1550, mainly keeping control
over strict public and private moral values.
On March 27, 1546, his wife died and, shortly afterwards, Francisco joined the
Company of Jesuits as his profession, something he kept secret at the express
advice of San Ignacio. On August 30, 1550, he left for Italy to start the next leg
of his life as a Jesuit. He formally renounced the Duchy in Oñate on May 11,
1551, and on May 23 of that year he was ordained as priest. On August 1 of
that year Francisco gave his first private mass in Azpeitia, and later, his first
public mass on November 15, 1551 in Vergara.
Elected third General of the Jesuits on January 20, 1565, during his governing
reign he contributed to the expansion of the Company of Jesuits all round the
world, promoting missions and, mostly, foundations in schools. To this end,
he promoted the construction of the Il Gesú, the temple that the Company of
Jesuits commissioned in Vignola and what would be the prototype of the new
Baroque architectural trends. Francisco died in Rome, on the night of September
30, 1572. He was beatified by Pope Urbano VIII on November 23, 1624 and
canonised by Pope Clemente X on April 12, 1761.
THE DUCAL PALACE OF GANDIA: The building where the Holy Duke was born
has become property of the people of Gandia thanks to the Company of Jesuits,
which acquired it via public auction on January 16, 1890 when it was a mere
ruin, having been totally abandoned after the Duke and Duchess of Osuna, its
previous owners, let it fall into disuse. During the time of Francisco de Borja,
its most illustrious resident, it still conserved – albeit not in perfect condition
– its fortress-like appearance that it had when the Royal Dukes first occupied
it at the end of the 14th century, a design intended to protect and distinguish
the space of those who ruled from that of the liegemen who obeyed. From this
early era, only the access doorway and bolt that locks it inside remain.
The fourth Duke would add the Hall of Crowns to the existing building, a room
that is accessed directly from the Patio of Arms, where canvases painted by
Brother Martín Coronas (S.I.) bring together episodes relevant to the life of
the Holy Duke. On the upper frieze of this hall, the wise advice of the Duke to
his children remains – instilling in them the importance of being honest and
not cheating, abiding by the words of Saint Paul: Sic currite ut comprehendatis

ent musical instrument. These were uncovered again in 2004 when the false
domed roof that had covered them since the 17th century was taken down.
These artists would therefore be the creators of a fragment of the fresco of the
Nativity in the doorway to the Holy Chalice chapel, and of the Adoration of the
Shepherds (1510) in the Cathedral Museum.
The San Francisco de Borja chapel is presided over by the family coat of arms,
bearing the famous red bull, although the most prominent feature here are
the huge canvases that decorate it: the Maella (1787), above the altar, which
narrates once again the famous scene in the crypt of the cathedral of Granada,
where during the burial of the beautiful Empress Isabel legend attributes to
San Francisco the (implausible) promise he made never again to serve any
other mortal Lord. On the lateral walls are two enormous canvases by Goya
commissioned by Josefa Alonso Pimentel, Duchess-Countess of Benavente
and Duchess of Gandia. One of these depicts the family farewell to the Holy
Duke and on the other, now a Jesuit, he appears expelling the devil from the
body of a dying man.
It is found in the Plaza de San Lorenzo. Its construction started in 1484,
with the famous Pere Compte taking part in this, and was opened by the third
Duke of Gandia, Juan de Borja Enríquez, San Francisco’s father, in 1520.
Of the original construction, only the façade, slightly concave, and the high
gallery of the ogee arches, remains. After the end of the 18th century, when
the Osuna family inherited the Duchy of Gandia, the building would be used
for such disparate purposes as an operatic theatre or spinning-wheel factory.
In 1973, the building was acquired by the State and on March 15, 1980 proceedings
were commenced to enable it to be declared a National Heritage
Monument. In 1983, the Ministry of the Interior handed it over to the Valencian
Parliament for its headquarters._
V CENTENARY OF THE BIRTH OF FRANCISCO DE BORJA
PROGRAMA DE ACTOS - PROGRAM OF EVENTS
the culture of the sugar cane, and promoted music and theatre.
Gandia wants to remember San Francisco and his origins in 2010. Due to this
fact, the city has scheduled an interesting calendar of activities in many different
fields, like the Classics Parade, where more than 200 first-rate actors will
recreate Borgian important characters and literacy classics. The Visitatio Se
Jordi Savall are well worth seeing.

GANDIA
A noble city with a rich historical past, Gandia is nowadays the perfect
blend of modernity and tradition. If we add to this its beautiful natural
countryside, its beaches and its many other charms. Gandia is an
unmissable destination for your holidays.
Town centre
Your tour through the capital of La Safor starts in the Ducal Palace, the most
striking building in the whole of Gandia. Located right in the town centre, it
comprises a huge central patio in which the two-tier staircase on either side
stand out, as do its impressive halls spread throughout the complex. At just
a few metres from the palace is the Plaza Mayor, which is the civic, administrative
and religious centre of the town and still, today, conserves part of
its ancient porticos. The town hall (1778) conserves its façade from this era.
Built in a Neoclassical style, it is finished off by a balustrade upon which rest
four stone busts representing the four virtues that any governing body should
possess.
The Collegiate Church of Santa María, in the same square, is a clear example
of the Catalán-Aragonese Gothic architecture of the 14th and 15th centuries.
In 1931 it was declared an official National Historical and Artistic Monument.
Behind the Plaza Mayor you find the old Sant Marc Hospital, built at the end
of the 14th century by the duke Alfons el Vell. Nowadays, totally reformed, it
houses Gandia’s archaeological museum. Its roof and pointed arches are its
most striking features.
nante.
The Santa Clara monastery, very close to the archaeological museum, is
another of the monuments in the town that you shouldn’t miss. Part of this
building is joined to the old city walls that date back to the 13th and 14th
centuries. At the end of the Calle Mayor is the Plaza de Escuelas Pías. Here
you will find the old university, installed in 1549 by San Francisco de Borja and
run by the company of Jesuits. The building comprised bedrooms, a refectory,
nurses’ quarters, offices, classrooms, academy and church. The Jesuits gave
lectures in this centre until 1767 when they were expelled. In 1806 the people
of the Escuelas Pías Catholic order took over the centre. Nowadays, they are
the owners and still dedicate themselves to teaching.
With this building, the tour of Gandia’s main monuments ends – or at least,
those inside what used to be the old walled city. Only tiny parts of the wall
remain, such as the Torreón del Pino tower, built in 1543.
Gandia also has many other buildings of interest, like the convent of Sant Roc
located in the La Vila Nova district. The Casa de Cultura Marqués de González
de Quirós, on the Paseo de las Germanías, is the most important civil building
of the city. Former residenc of the Vallier family, it dates back to the end of
the 19th century. Of a palatial, defensive structure with a ground floor, upper
floor for the nobles and attic, it is flanked by two towers. The building itself is
complemented by two lateral gardens that link to one in front of it.
El Raval is one of the most attractive neighbourhoods of the town. It retains
its narrow streets where Christians, Jews and Muslims lived together. Here,
you will find the church of Sant Josep, built in 1770. Its ancient structure was
demolished during the Civil War, although it retains its bell-tower from the
18th century. Equally symbolic is the Santa Anna district where the calvario, a
footpath up a mountain dotted with religious imagery, leads you to the 14th-
century hermitage of the same name which offers you a panoramic view of
the town. Now outside the town itself, in the marshes, you will come to the
Alqueria del Duc, a 15th-century rural fortress that used to be the summer
residence of the Dukes of Gandia. Its Arab tower is its most striking feature,
and it retains a sun-dial that dates back to 1780.
Natural countryside
Gandia’s most significant natural heritage is formed by its beaches and surrounding
areas. Considered one of the best beaches in the area, Gandia has
five kilometres of coastline characterised by its abundant, fine sand and topof-the-range
facilities. In fact, it boasts the European blue flag and the ‘Q’ for
quality awards. The beach is separated from the marshes by a line of dunes.
Behind this line of dunes is the wetland. This is of vital importance given its
ullals, natural sources of fresh water. From here you can see Bairén Castle on
top of a small hill where species of mountain shrub._
OLIVA
Taking a stroll along the shore, losing yourself among small and historical
street corners, relaxing in the sun with the sound of the sea
and the music of the chiringuitos, or beach bars, in the background is
just the tip of the iceberg of oliva’s attractions.
Town centre
The old Moorish neighbourhood, or arrabal, is one of the most attractive of the
town, particularly Calle La Hoz, with its unique winding uphill structure and
houses built on rocks. You can also visit Sant Roc church, a former mosque
that stands out for the frescoes on the inside of its domed roofs.
Natural countryside
The beauty of Oliva’s beaches resides mainly in their unspoilt nature and the
long line of dunes that surrounds them where a rich variety of indigenous flora
and fauna have their natural habitat. Ten kilometres of fine sand form the six
beaches of Oliva, each one with their own individual charm. The quality of
its waters is evidenced by its European blue flag, given to beaches with the
cleanest waters in Europe.
Paseo natural
Festivals
Oliva enjoys some of the area’s most popular festivals like the Fallas and Semana
Santa at Easter, but if anything in its fiesta calendar jumps it for its
spectacular nature it is the Moors and Christians, on july 17th._
The countryside of Tavernes is a union of sea and mountains in perfect
harmony. La Goleta and Tavernes are quiet beaches which are connected
by various routes with the marshland.
The church of Sant Pere Apòstol is situated in the oldest part of the town.
This monument was built in 1535, although the oldest relics preserved date
from the 18th century. Also in the centre of the town is the municipal market
where traders, even today, still sell regional products, predominantly food, at
42 market stalls. On the outskirts of Tavernes de la Valldigna, you can visit the
“Calvario” (Stations of the Cross), one of the most well-preserved examples in
the Comunidad Valenciana.
Among the celebrations in this area, the traditional porrats are a big feature
and these take place during the summertime –the “Dia de la Sang” in the Clot
de la Font on 13 July, and the “Dia de Sant Llorenç” in the hermitage dedicated
to this saint, on 10 August. The fiestas for the patron saint , in September,
consist of traditional activities such as throwing and dragging competitions,
music concerts, etc._
