Hardiness:<br />
A native breed of the Pyr<strong>en</strong>ees, where conditions are known to be among the harshest in <strong>France</strong>: extremes of heat and<br />
cold, huge daily temperature ranges (up to 30°C). In the spring and autumn wh<strong>en</strong> the animals are outsi<strong>de</strong>: wind, rain and<br />
snow, and insects. Poor forage which is sparse and wi<strong>de</strong>ly scattered in summer. The breed has <strong>de</strong>veloped the hardy traits<br />
that are ess<strong>en</strong>tial to live in these surroundings, and it can be kept, with its calf, in year-round outdoors rearing:<br />
- B<strong>la</strong>ck mucous membranes and area around the eyes, a paler coat in summer<br />
- Maintains rectal temperature for excell<strong>en</strong>t fertility<br />
- Resistance to cold and external parasites (short, thick coat)<br />
- For long difficult travel in harsh terrain: b<strong>la</strong>ck hooves<br />
- The Gasconne knows how to find its own food and accepts and makes excell<strong>en</strong>t use of everything it is offered<br />
- Fawn-coloured calf at birth, with a darker coat in winter, with the ability to un<strong>de</strong>rgo periods of prosperity and<br />
scarcity alike, with no consequ<strong>en</strong>ces for its fertility (one calving a year)<br />
- Easy calvings : 97%, weight of calf at birth: 38 kg = peace of mind for the farmer<br />
