the exchange of knowledge and
lore and for strengthening the
relationships between the townspeople.
These beliefs, in which
the two world views –Catholic
and native Mexican– are merged,
are thus valued and transmitted.
For this reason, MMAPO has the
privilege of displaying some of
the characteristic elements of
this singular and inclusive ritual:
a wreath of coral vine flowers, a
scapular beautifully ornamented
with ribbons of bright colors,
and two rosaries, one made with
animal crackers, and the other,
with marigold flowers.
Feast of the
Parish of Saint
Peter the Apostle
in Jantetelco
Franck Ibarra Sedeño*
Jantetelco is a town located in
eastern Morelos, bordering with
the state of Puebla. The political
and ecclesiastical communities
that constitute it are the same. Ii
is also a parish seat and the seat
of the municipal government, and
it comprises the villages of San
Antonio La Esperanza, Santa Ana
Tenango, San Mateo Chalcatzingo,
Santiago Amayuca and San
Pedro Jantetelco. Jantetelco is
equally the host town of the parish
feast.
The Holy Jubilee
The jubilee begins five days before
the feast. Jubilees have been
celebrated since the days of the
Old Testament (Cf. Ex 23, 10-11;
Lev 25, 1-28; Dt 15, 1-6). These
were times dedicated to God in a
particular way. Every seven years,
there was a “Sabbatic year”, and
a “Jubilee year” –which was more
solemn– occurred every fifty
years. As a sign of the celebration,
the land was allowed to rest,
slaves were set free, and debts
were condoned. The purpose of
the celebration of the Jubilee year
was to restore equality among all
the children of Israel. The Jubilee
year was meant to reestablish
social justice. Today, refers mostly
to the feeling of joy experienced
at the upcoming feast; it is also
a special time when the Holy
Sacrament is displayed from 8
am to 4:30 pm for the benefit of
the believers, as well as a time of
solemn blessings for the people.
Everyday at 4 pm during this time,
Jantetelco welcomes with open
arms those pilgrims who visit the
town from various communities.
Pilgrims from Amayuca are welcomed
at the arch at the entrance
of the town. Pilgrims from other
communities are welcomed, also
at 4 pm, at the doors of of the
building of the 11th Public High
School of the State of Morelos
(Colegio de Bachilleres del Estado
de Morelos, Cobaem). A Holy
Mass is celebrated every day at 5
pm, after which snacks and drinks
are offered to the pilgrims and to
the townspeople in general in the
atrium of the parish church.
Musical soirée and prayers in
honor of Saint Peter the Apostle
This year, Jantetelco is celebrating
the “Third soirée” on June 28.
It was the 2011-2014 administration
of the festivities committee,
presided by Professor Franck
Ibarra Sedeño and his wife Deni
Castellanos Abdón, who established
these soirées leading up to
the feast. Parish choirs, mariachi
bands, brass bands and music
groups perform successively
from 6 pm to 12 am, ending the
performance with the traditional
“Mañanitas” birthday song. The
participations of the choirs are
brief, and they alternate with
prayers and guided chants. The
image of Saint Peter, our patron
saint, is displayed for worship by
the faithful. This all may change
according to the organization of
the committee in turn.
On Monday, June 29 at 4:30 pm
firecrackers are shot off in salutation
in order to awake the faithful
and announce the traditional
“Mañanitas” to be performed at
5 am by a mariachi band and the
