Esteexcitante y muy esperado evento se distinguepor crear conciencia y recaudar fondos paraorganizaciones sin fines de lucro locales en lasIslas Vírgenes Británicas.Desde el primer Poker Run en el año 2002,la seguridad de todos los competidores y susacompañantes ha sido de suma importanciapara todas las organizaciones involucradas.“Durante el evento ponemos en práctica laregla del Conductor Designado,” indicó elorganizador del evento Nick Willis. “Estosignifica que todos los conductores estánllamados a seguir todas las reglas náuticasestablecidas para garantizar que todos losparticipantes pasen un día seguro y divertidoen el agua”.Otra medida de seguridad adoptada paraasegurar el bienestar de los competidores es elPre Poker Run Rendezvous, el cual se llevaráa cabo el viernes 28 de mayo. “<strong>La</strong> idea de estareunión es trazar una ruta segura y coordinadapor Virgen Gorda,” indicó Willis.Este año se estableció un punto de partida fijoidentificado por dos boyas de SOL Petroleum,junto a dos catamaranes de 47 pies. Loscatamaranes estarán separados uno del otropor una distancia aproximada de 1000 yardas,espacio por el cual todas las embarcacionesdeben viajar.Todos los procedimientos de aduana einmigración se llevarán a cabo en el LeverickBay Resort, y todos los mensajes de seguridadserán transmitidos a través del canal 16.“Con esto en mente, hemos desarrollado unainteresante reunión que incluirá miembrosde la comunidad náutica de Puerto Rico, lasIslas Vírgenes de los Estados Unidos y las IslasVírgenes Británicas, en coordinación con laGuardia Costera de los Estados Unidos y lasautoridades locales,” indicó Willis.El personal del Poker Run staff, junto a losauspiciadores, también organizarán otrasactividades como música y juegos playeros,entre otros durante el evento. Éstas incluyenla tradicional cena a la barbacoa, música envivo, un espectáculo de zancudos o “mockojumbies,” y un torneo de voleibol en SandBox.Medidas preventivas también han sidotomadas para garantizar la seguridad de todoslos asistentes y visitantes de la playa duranteel evento. “Nuestra meta es crear un ambienteseguro de sana competencia para amistadesy familiares de todo el Caribe y los EstadosUnidos, todos unidos en un día inolvidable,”concluyó Willis.Aunque caracterizado por los competidores delanchas motoras, el Poker Run está abierto atodo tipo de embarcaciones. Si puede navegaro remar toda la ruta, es elegible para competir.Al igual que en cualquier juego de Poker, loimportante son las cartas en mano. Aquellosque no son propietarios de una embarcación,pero aún así interesan participar, puedenregistrarse como tripulantes en alguna de lasembarcaciones compitiendo. Rudy Polselli, Jr.,aboard his 55-foot Viking, Rude Awakening,earned Top Angler and the prestigious Capt.Johnny Harms ‘Give Him Line’ Trophy with therelease of five blue marlin.Anglers will set their sights on catching andreleasing the most blue marlin, white marlin andsailfish. “This is an all-release tournament,” says Kreiner. “Nofish will be boated or brought to the dock for weigh-in.”IGFA trained Observers, all members of the IGFTO(International Game Fish Tournament Observers), will rideaboard each boat throughout the tournament to verify thereleases. Final registration and the Kick Off Party will takeJuly Open Billfish Tournament Top Boat —Gulf Rascal— with 5 Blue Marlin releasesplace at the VIGFC Clubhouse, in Red Hook, on July 22, from6 p.m. to 10 p.m. This will be the same venue for the sit-downAwards Banquet on July 25 th .Lines go in the water at 8:30 a.m. and out at 5 p.m., except onthe final day of the three-day tournament when lines out willbe at 4 p.m.The public is invited to greet the fleet as theboats come back to the dock around sunset.The number of flags flying on the outriggersindicates how many billfish the boat’s anglerscaught and released for the day. There will alsobe dock parties each night at the American YachtHarbor marina.Past winners of the prestigious Capt. JohnnyHarms ‘Give Him Line’ Trophy read like a Who’sWho of blue marlin sport fishing. Angler ElliotFishman’s winning 845-pound catch in 1968 setan all-tackle world record. Only two anglers havereeled in this honor two times – the late HowardCrouse in 1965 and 1988, and Puerto Rico’s latelegendary angler Ralph Christiansen in 1973 and1984.Proceeds from the JOBT benefit the Boys & GirlsClub of the Virgin Islands.
