El número de canteras y de empresas extractoras de mármol en España también ha aumentadoen los últimos años.La evolución del comercio exterior de mármol en la Comunidad Valenciana también muestralas importantes cifras de negocio de este sector. La Comunidad Valenciana es la ComunidadAutónoma que más exporta mármol.La evolución de las exportaciones de mármol para el período 2000-2004, tanto enla provincia de Alicante como en la Comunidad Valenciana y en España, reflejan unatendencia ascendente que se vio interrumpida en el año 2003. Sin embargo, en el últimoaño del período considerado se inicia de nuevo una tendencia al alza de las exportacionesde mármol de Alicante y de la Comunidad Valenciana.En el año 2004, las exportaciones de mármol de la Comunidad Valenciana representanel 62,60 % de las exportaciones nacionales de mármol, siendo Alicante la provincia quedomina, tanto a nivel regional como nacional, con un porcentaje de ventas al exterior del50%.En la actualidad los principales destinos del mármol de Alicante son EEUU, con más del30% de las exportaciones totales de mármol. Seguidamente, las exportaciones a China yMéxico, representan el 8% y el 6% respectivamente.Los principales países de los que Alicante importa mármol son Turquía e Italia. Casi el75% de las importaciones totales de mármol proceden de estos dos países.Existen dos instituciones de apoyo al sector del mármol, la Asociación Mármol de Alicante.Asociación de la Comunidad Valenciana y la Unidad Técnica del Mármol (UTEM), del InstitutoTecnológico de la Construcción (AIDICO).
