6Petróleo 2 .- Es una mezcla compleja <strong>de</strong> hidrocarburos,que se encuentra en el subsuelo.La palabra petróleo proviene <strong>de</strong> dos vocablos griegos,PETRA y OLEUM, equivalentes en su or<strong>de</strong>n a piedra yaceite, lo cual etimológicamente significa aceite <strong>de</strong> piedra.Los elementos constitutivos <strong>de</strong>l petróleo son loshidrocarburos, líquidos o gaseosos, sólidos o en disolución,formados especialmente por carbono e hidrógeno, enproporciones <strong>de</strong>l 76 al 86 por ciento el primero y <strong>de</strong>l 14 porciento el segundo, en una extensa variación <strong>de</strong>combinaciones. El gas natural, componente también <strong>de</strong>lpetróleo, pue<strong>de</strong> presentarse asociado a este o enyacimientos distantes <strong>de</strong> él. Contiene también pequeñascantida<strong>de</strong>s (5 por ciento, aproximadamente) <strong>de</strong> otroselementos como oxígeno, nitrógeno y algunos metales ometaloi<strong>de</strong>s como el hierro, vanadio, aluminio, calcio y sodio.Frecuentemente está asociado al agua, que se encuentraemulsionada con el crudo hasta en un 30 por ciento.De acuerdo con la gravedad, el petróleo pue<strong>de</strong> serliviano, medio o pesado. El crudo liviano tiene una gravedadsuperior a 30 grados API, los medianos se sitúan entre 29 y22.3 grados API, y los pesados entre 22 y 10 grados API,con viscosidad elevada y un alto contenido <strong>de</strong> azufre,nitrógeno y metales. Con grados menores tenemos losasfaltos y arenas impregnadas.El petróleo está localizado en el subsuelo, impregnado en formaciones<strong>de</strong> tipo arenoso o calcáreo. Obtiene los tres estados <strong>de</strong> la materia: sólidolíquido y gaseoso, <strong>de</strong>pendiendo <strong>de</strong> la posición, temperatura y presión enque se encuentre, su color varía <strong>de</strong>l ámbar al negro; y, cuando asume elestado gaseoso, es inodoro, incoloro e insípido.Uno <strong>de</strong> los atributos que <strong>de</strong>termina la calidad <strong>de</strong>l petróleo crudo, es la<strong>de</strong>nsidad o peso específico y se mi<strong>de</strong> en grados API, proveniente <strong>de</strong>l2PETROECUADOR “La Industria Hidrocarburífera en el Ecuador” Edt. 7American Petroleum Institute (<strong>Instituto</strong> Americano <strong>de</strong> petróleo), un crudo<strong>de</strong> mayor grado API es <strong>de</strong> mejor calidad y viceversa; otro <strong>de</strong> los factoresimportantísimos es el contenido <strong>de</strong> azufre, el petróleo pue<strong>de</strong> ser agrio odulce, <strong>de</strong>pendiendo <strong>de</strong>l mayor o menor porcentaje <strong>de</strong> este elemento. Elpetróleo con menor contenido <strong>de</strong> azufre, tiene mayor aceptación en elmerado internacional y su cotización es mayor.El petróleo crudo que se extrae <strong>de</strong> la amazonía ecuatoriana, es <strong>de</strong>variado grado API, <strong>de</strong>pendiendo <strong>de</strong>l campo que provenga, estos crudosse mezclan al entrar en el Sistema <strong>de</strong> Oleoducto Transecuatoriano SOTE,sin bajar <strong>de</strong>l grado mínimo que requiere el sistema, para ser transportadoy po<strong>de</strong>r exportarse, luego se realizan las <strong>de</strong>bidas compensaciones por lasdiferencias <strong>de</strong> calida<strong>de</strong>s.El crudo perteneciente a las compañías privadas, en su mayorporcentaje es transportado por el Oleoducto <strong>de</strong> Crudos Pesados OCP,para ser exportado a través el Terminal Marítimo <strong>de</strong> Esmeraldas.1.2. ORIGEN DEL PETRÓLEO 3No se sabe con certeza cómo se formó el petróleo en elsubsuelo, ya que aún está en discusión varias teorías sobresu origen y proceso formativo.Lo que se ha confirmado es que todos los yacimientospetrolíferos que se conocen en el mundo se hallan ensedimentos <strong>de</strong> origen marino, asociados a ellos.
