En Chile se practica heli-ski desde fines de la década de los 80,
impulsado por los centros de ski Valle Nevado, cuyo terreno va
desde los valles de El Cepo y Olivares hasta el de Parraguirre, en una
superficie de alrededor de 200 mil hectáreas; y más recientemente
Puma Lodge, un complejo que ofrece una superficie de 5.000 km 2 de
laderas, cumbres, glaciares y riscos, ubicado al interior de la ciudad de
Rancagua, entre la Reserva Los Cipreses y el Río Tinguiririca.
En Portillo, donde se cuenta con un helicóptero con capacidad para
cuatro esquiadores, un guía y el piloto, se define el lugar de acuerdo
a la calidad de la nieve y el menor riesgo de avalancha. Después de
dejarlos se visualiza el trayecto que hacen los deportistas para definir
el lugar donde vuelven a abordar el aparato. Hay paquetes turísticos
desde uno a siete días.
Con alrededor de 4.600 kilómetros de cordillera, es fácil suponer que
hay una extensa lista de lugares desde donde “lanzarse”. Pero no. Para
poder practicar heli-ski se debe cumplir con condiciones geográficas
específicas que combinen seguridad y calidad de la nieve. En general,
y según las empresas que ofrecen estas excursiones, esta disciplina
puede practicarse de junio a octubre en distintos puntos, que se
distribuyen entre San Felipe y la Patagonia.
Así lo explica van Bebber: “Las condiciones ideales de nieve, por la
altura de las montañas, condiciones climáticas y disponibilidad de
helicópteros para practicarlo, se presentan entre la V y la VI regiones.
En la región Metropolitana hay varias opciones accesibles para
practicar heli-ski, tanto saliendo desde Santiago o bien directamente
desde Valle Nevado, donde hay mucho movimiento de helicópteros,
sobre todo después de nevadas y con días despejados”, señala, y
agrega: “Pero, para los que quieren tener una experiencia completa
de heli-ski, por superficie esquiable, hotelería y vasta experiencia de
los guías y tripulación de vuelo, recomendaría el Puma Lodge, ubicado
en la cordillera de la VI región a 2 horas 30 minutos por tierra desde
Santiago”.
Heli-ski practice started in Chile by the end of the 80s, supported

In Portillo, the helicopter's (with capacity for 4 skiers) crew is led by a
guide and a pilot, who define together the safest location based on
snow quality and areas less risky of suffering an avalanche. Once the
helicopter drops off skiers, the experts visually follow their trail so they
can determine the pick up spot. There are special packages for tourists
from one day to seven days.
With about 4,600 kilometers of mountain range, it is easy to believe that
there is a long list of places for just "diving in". But no, it's not that simple.
Weather, safety and snow quality conditions must comply before hand.
In general, and according to the companies offering these excursions,
this activity may be performed from June to October at different points,
present between San Felipe and The Patagonia.
As explained by van Bebber: "The ideal conditions in regards of the
snow, mountain height, weather conditions and helicopter availability
to practice heli-ski are particularly easier to find between the 5th and
6th regions in Chile. In the Metropolitan Region, we may encounter
many options as well, leaving from Santiago or departing directly from
Valle Nevado, where there's a busy helicopter traffic, specially after a
snowfall or clear days". he states and adds: “But, for those seeking
a full heli-ski adventure in terms of surface, lodging and experienced
crew on board, I would recommend Puma Lodge, located by The
Andes and only a 2 1/2 hour drive from Santiago".
