2016 ha sido un año tumultuoso, lleno de cambios para muchas
personas en todo el mundo. Los acontecimientos a menudo
difíciles y tristes que suceden alrededor del mundo siempre
me hacen estar muy agradecida de vivir en el hermoso país de
México y en particular en la maravillosa Riviera Maya. Si bien no
existe un lugar perfecto, doy gracias que esta área de México
está libre de muchas opresiones y dificultades que otras áreas
enfrentan ahora que esperamos la llegada del 2017.
Con eventos de la industria como Global Wellness Summit
(Encuentro Global del Bienestar en español) y la Green Spa
Network (Red de Spas Verdes), ambos realizados en los últimos
meses, el otoño es siempre una época del año muy entretenida. El GWS de este año se celebró en la
hermosa ciudad alpina de Kitzbühel, en Austria. Con un crecimiento extraordinario, la industria del
bienestar en todo el mundo se ubica ahora en 3,72 billones de dólares, con la industria de los spas
en los 98,6 millones de dólares. Ve a la página 6 para obtener más detalles.
Este número de Spa & Wellness México cuenta con el 6º Anual Premios de Productos. Este tiempo

Editor's letter
2016 has been tumultuous year, full of change, for many people around the world. The often difficult
and sad events that happen around the world always make me so thankful to live in the beautiful
country of Mexico and in particular in the wonderful Riviera Maya. While nowhere is perfect, this area
of Mexico is free from many oppressions and hardships that other areas face and for that I am grateful
and thankful as we look forward to 2017.
With industry events such as Global Wellness Summit and Green Spa Network both taking place in
recent months, fall is always a busy time of year. This year’s GWS was held in the beautiful alpine
town of Kitzbühel, in Austria. Reporting excellent growth, the wellness industry worldwide is now a
3.72 trillion dollar industry, with the spa industry accounting for 98.6 billion. Turn to page 6 for more
details.
This issue of Spa & Wellness Mexico features the 6th annual Product Awards. This time of product
testing is a great opportunity to see the innovations in products and ingredients across our industry
and it’s always encouraging to welcome new international brands here in Mexico. See page 28 for the

Cumbre Global de Bienestar, Austria
GWS Día 1
Para mí, el tema más frecuente del
día 1 en GWS fue la conexión entre la
belleza y el bienestar. Esta industria
de 999 millones de dólares es un
sector enorme de nuestra industria
y creo que la belleza sigue siendo la
fuerza motriz y la motivación detrás
de gran parte del gasto en toda la
industria del bienestar en general.
La belleza casi se ha convertido en
una “palabra sucia” en la industria
del bienestar en los últimos años
con connotaciones de superficialidad
y narcisismo. A veces, la belleza se
ve como algo que está solo al nivel
de la piel. Todos queremos promover
la “belleza desde dentro” y los
sentimientos de bienestar.
No podemos negar el hecho de
que estamos lo suficientemente
conectados para reconocer la belleza
en la naturaleza, en el sonido y en
todo lo que nos rodea. Seguramente
ver y sentir belleza cuando nos
miramos en el espejo solo puede ser
una cosa buena. Al adoptar la belleza
y reconocer que somos parte de esta
industria junto con todos los demás
aspectos del bienestar, podemos
trabajar juntos para fomentar una
visión saludable de la belleza, la
imagen corporal y el envejecimiento.
Las empresas de cuidado de la piel
se reunieron en una sesión para
desarrollar “La Intersección de la
Belleza y el Bienestar: Entender la
relación emocional, física, psicológica
y social entre la belleza, la salud y el
bienestar”.
También escuchamos a Katherine
Johnston y Ophelia Yeung,
quienes nos permitieron tener una
vista previa de la más reciente
investigación de la industria que
demostraron efectivamente con una
representación visual impresionante.
Una sesión alegre e interesante que

Johnston y Yeung advirtieron que, de 2013 a 2015, la economía mundial se contrajo un 2 por ciento. Sin
embargo, en este mismo tiempo, la economía global de bienestar creció más del 10 por ciento. Esto se debe al
crecimiento de las clases medias que tienen más ingresos disponibles y pueden dedicarse a su estilo de vida. El
aumento de las enfermedades crónicas y el envejecimiento de las poblaciones también significan más gasto en
estilos de vida más saludables y prevención de enfermedades.

GWS Día 2
El segundo día de GWS empezó con una
explosión. La sesión de Edie Weiner,
“El doble Cambio de Paradigma: La
transformación económica global más
el comienzo de la civilización Alpha“.
Esta sesión predecía cambios futuros,
oportunidades y reacciones. Weiner
describe cómo nos estamos moviendo
en la economía del metaespacio y
necesitamos considerar 10 áreas
principales de crecimiento: Espacio
interior, espacio exterior, micro espacio,
espacio cibernético, espacio de tiempo,
espacio de diseño, espacio verde-azul,
espacio de almacenamiento, espacio
de juego e inter espacio. Ella advierte
que, con este rápido cambio económico
que está sucediendo a tal ritmo, el
resultado de dejar a grandes sectores
de la población “detrás” conducirá
inevitablemente a la negación, al
contragolpe, al estancamiento y al
autoritarismo.
La tarde del Día 2 fue reservada
para actividades de bienestar,
donde caminamos, nos lanzamos en
parapente, practicamos ciclismo de
montaña y almorzamos encima de
la famosa montaña Hahnenkamm.
Aunque no fuimos deleitados con la
espectacular luz del sol en nuestro
día de llegada, la lluvia y la niebla
no pararon la diversión ya que todos
disfrutamos de las actividades y el
delicioso y bien merecido almuerzo.
La cena de gala de la noche se
celebró en Swarovski Crystal Worlds
donde todo brillaba y brillaba para
una noche fantástica. Nos paseamos
por la deslumbrante “Cámara de las
Maravillas” disfrutando de cócteles y
entonces nos dispusimos a disfrutar
una deliciosa comida rodeada de más
cristales de los que puedas imaginar.
La Subasta del 10mo Aniversario logró
recaudar $ 108,000 para beneficiar los

Instituto Global de Bienestar y Susie

GWS Día 3
El día 3 comenzó con el desafío del
estudiante. Más de 60 presentaciones
fueron recibidas este año, y se llegó
a tres finalistas que presentaron
sus ideas al jurado. El ganador
fue anunciado como Shahrin Ali
de la Universidad North South en
Bangladesh quien, incapaz de asistir
a la cumbre en persona, hizo su
presentación a través de Skype.
Su idea es hacer que las toallas
sanitarias sean accesibles al 80% de
las mujeres en todo Bangladesh que
actualmente dependen de opciones
insalubres e ineficaces. El concepto
de Mukto acerca las Toallas Sanitaria
promete reducir los problemas de
salud y sociales asociados con este
tema. Shahrin Ali recibió el primer
premio de $ 5,000.
Irene Forte de los Hoteles Rocco
Forte planteó estrategias para
involucrar al segmento de mercado
de millenials y aconsejó a todos,
basándose en la investigación,
diciéndoles “¡Quieran o no, los
millenials son muy importantes!”.
Después de haber desarrollado el
programa de bienestar para Rocco
Forte, centró su atención en el
desarrollo profesional en la industria
hotelera con una aplicación que
ayuda al personal a centrarse en
sus metas de carrera, aprender
remotamente a su propio ritmo y
avanzar a través de las filas en su
carrera elegida.
El Día Mundial del Bienestar fue
reconocido y celebrado pues
Embajadores y Partidarios Clave de
todo el mundo subieron al escenario
para animar a lo largo de la canción
GWD. Más tarde, la fundadora del
GWD, Belgin Aksoy, fue invitada al
escenario para recibir el Premio a la
Mujer Líder en el Bienestar.
En total, se entregaron cinco premios
a los líderes de la industria:
Líder en bienestar en el lugar
de trabajo: Dr. Fikry Isaac, ex
vicepresidente de servicios globales
de salud de Johnson & Johnson,
pionero en el campo de la promoción
de la salud en el lugar de trabajo y
la salud global.
Líder de la Mujer en el Bienestar:
Belgin Aksoy, fundadora del Global
Wellness Day, un movimiento que
ha llegado a más de 90 países.
Líder en sostenibilidad: Balthasar
Hauser, propietario de Biohotel
Stanglwirt, fue galardonado por su
pionero y sostenible Tyrolean spa
resort.
Líder en Innovación: Richard
Schmitz, CEO de H / S / M Hotel y
Spa Management, por su visión de
futuro adicionando la frase “& Spa”
al nombre del icónico “Brenners Park
Hotel & Spa” en 1983.
Premio Debra Simon al Líder en
el Fomento del Bienestar Mental:
Jeremy McCarthy, Director de Spa
y Bienestar del Mandarin Oriental

de Spas y Bienestar”, recibió este
primer honor por su trabajo en traer
el poder de la psicología positiva a la
industria del Spa.
A lo largo de este décimo aniversario
se nos animó a escribir nuestras
predicciones para el futuro y dejarlas
caer en la cápsula del tiempo. Esta
fue sellada por Edie Weiner de Los
Cazadores del Futuro y será abierta
en 10 años en la cumbre mundial
sobre el bienestar 2026. ¿Estarás allí

GWS Day 1
For me, the most prevalent theme
of day 1 at GWS was the connection
between beauty and wellness.
This 999 billion dollar industry is
a huge sector of our industry and
I believe beauty is still the driving
force and motivation, behind so
much of the spending in the entire
wellness industry overall. Beauty
has become almost a ‘dirty word’ in
the wellness industry in recent years
with connotations of superficiality
and narcissism. At times, beauty is
seen as only skin deep. We all want
to promote ‘beauty from within’ and
feelings of wellness.
We cannot deny the fact that we are
hard wired to recognize beauty in
nature, in sound and all around us.
Surely it can only be a good thing to
see and feel beauty when we look in
the mirror. By embracing beauty and
acknowledging we are part of this
industry along with all other aspects
of wellness, we can work together to
encourage a healthy view of beauty,

together in a session to develop ‘The

Johnston and Yeung advised that,
from 2013 to 2015, the global
economy shrank by 2 per cent.
However, in this same time, the
global wellness economy grew by
over 10 per cent. This is due to
the growth in the middle classes
who have more disposable income
and can dedicate to their lifestyle.
The increase in chronic disease and
aging populations also means more
spending on healthier lifestyles and
disease prevention.

GWS Day 2
Day 2 of GWS started with a bang.
Edie Weiner’s session, ‘The Double
Paradigm Shift: The Global Economic
Transformation Plus The Beginning
Of Civilization Alpha’. This predicted
future changes, opportunities and
reactions. Weiner outlines how
we are moving into the Metaspace
Economy and need to consider 10
major areas of growth: Inner Space,
Outer Space, Micro Space, Cyber
Space, Time Space, Design Space,
Green-Blue Space, Storage Space,
Play Space and Inter Space. She
warns that, with this fast moving
economic change happening at such
a pace, the result of leaving large
sections of the population ‘behind’ will
inevitably lead to denial, backlash,
gridlock and authoritarianism.
The afternoon of Day 2 was set
aside for wellness activities, as
we hiked, paraglided, mountain-
biked and lunched atop the famous
Hahnenkamm Mountain. Although
we weren’t treated to the spectacular
sunshine of our arrival day, the
rain and fog didn’t stop the fun as
everyone enjoyed the activities and
the delicious, well-deserved lunch.
The evening gala dinner was held at
Swarovski Crystal Worlds where we
glittered and sparkled for a fantastic
evening. We meandered through
the dazzling ‘Chamber of Wonders’
enjoying cocktails and then settled
for a delightful meal surrounded
by more crystals than you can
imagine. The 10th Anniversary
Auction managed to raise $108,000
to benefit the future Global Wellness
Institute research projects, and
Susie Ellis was surprised with an
award of $27000 to further her own
development as an international
leader of the wellness industry.

GWS Day 3
Day 3 kicked off with the student
challenge. Over 60 submissions
were received this year, and it
came down to three finalists who
presented their ideas to the judging
panel. The winner was announced as
Shahrin Ali of North South University
in Bangladesh who, unable to attend
the summit in person, made her
presentation via Skype. Her idea
is to make sustainable sanitary
napkins accessible to the 80% of
women throughout Bangladesh who
currently rely on unsanitary and
ineffective options. Mukto Sanitary
Napkin concept promises to reduce
the health and social problems
associated with this issue. Shahrin
Ali received the $5,000 top prize.
Irene Forte of Rocco Forte Hotels
outlined strategies for engaging the
market segment of millenials and
advised everyone that, based on the
research “Like it or not, millenials
are quite important!”. Having
developed the wellness program for
Rocco Forte, she then focused her
attention on career development
within the hotel industry with an
app that helps staff focus on their
career goals, learn remotely at their
own pace, and advance through the
ranks on their chosen career path.
Global Wellness Day was recognized
and celebrated as Ambassadors
and Key Supporters from around
the globe came up to the stage to
cheer along to the GWD song. Later
on GWD Founder Belgin Aksoy was
invited onto the stage to receive the
Leading Woman in Wellness Award.
In total, five awards were presented
to leaders in the industry:
Leader in Workplace Wellness: Dr.
Fikry Isaac, former VP of global
health services for Johnson &
Johnson, a pioneer in the field of
workplace health promotion and
global health.
Leading Woman in Wellness: Belgin
Aksoy, founder of Global Wellness
Day, a movement that has reached
over 90 countries.
Leader in Sustainability: Balthasar
Hauser, owner of Biohotel Stanglwirt,
was honored for his pioneering,
sustainable Tyrolean spa resort.
Leader in Innovation: Richard
Schmitz, CEO of H/S/M Hotel and
Spa Management, for his forwardthinking
addition of the phrase
“& Spa” to the name of the iconic
“Brenners Park Hotel & Spa” in 1983.
Debra Simon Award for Leader in
Furthering Mental Wellness: Jeremy
McCarthy, Group Director of Spa &
Wellness for Mandarin Oriental Hotel
Group, and author of The Psychology
of Spas & Wellbeing, received
this first-ever honor for his work
in bringing the power of positive
psychology to the spa industry.
Over the course of this 10th
Anniversary summit we were
encouraged to write our predictions
for the future and drop them into
the time capsule. This was sealed by
Edie Weiner of The Future Hunters
and will be opened in 10 years
time at the 2026 Global Wellness
Summit. Will you be there when it

We toasted with champagne
to another successful summit
completed. The exciting news is that
next year’s GWS will be held at The
Breakers, Miami, Florida. An easier
journey for those of us coming from
Mexico, the Caribbean or within the
US!

El 9º Congreso Anual de la Green Spa Network pide
Colaboración Consciente
Durante 9 años, el Congreso de la
Green Spa Network se centró en
la importancia de cuidar nuestro
medio ambiente y en la gran
oportunidad o incluso la obligación
de la gente de la industria del
spa y el bienestar de apoyar la
sostenibilidad. Cuando el conjunto
de 120 profesionales del bienestar
se reunió este año en Devil’s
Thumb Ranch en la cresta de las
Montañas Rocosas en Colorado,
estuvo claro que la intensa belleza
de la ubicación proporcionaría un
telón de fondo adecuado para un
enfoque ambiental.
La extensión de más de 6000 acres
ejemplifica un compromiso a largo
plazo con la sostenibilidad, pues
muchos de sus edificios están
hechos de materiales recuperados
o reciclados. El agua se trata y
se recicla, y el calentamiento
y enfriamiento de la fuente
terrestre mantiene los edificios a
una temperatura cómoda. Pronto

For 9 years, the Green Spa
Network Congress focused on
the importance of caring for our
environment and the special
opportunity or even obligation

sustainability. As this year’s cadre
of 120 wellness professionals
gathered at Devil’s Thumb Ranch
on the crest of the Rocky Mountains
in Colorado, it was clear that the
intense beauty of the location
would provide a fitting backdrop
for an environmental focus.
GSN carefully selects the locations
for its main inspirational event;
not only to support a powerful
connection with the natural world,
but also to showcase properties are
committed to operating through
sustainable values. This steadfast
vision by owner/steward Bob
Fanch made Devil’s Thumb Ranch
in Tabernash Colorado suitable
for GSN’s Congress in 2013, and
for their first repeat location this
Fall. The more than 6000 acre
expanse exemplifies a long term
commitment to sustainability, with
many of its buildings made out of
salvaged or reclaimed materials.
Water is treated and recycled,
and ground-source heating and
cooling keeps buildings at a
comfortable temperature. Soon
they will produce 50 percent of
their energy on property via the
largest privately owned solar array
in the state. A sustainable cattle
ranch is in the works, and many
other sustainable operational
practices make one’s experience
at the ranch uniquely “green”.
GSN’s tag line “Vital people, Vital
planet” embodies the association’s
value on community and the
vibrant energy that arises when
like-minded people connect. This
year’s event brought some 15
speakers and facilitators together
to work with an overall theme of
“Manifesting Vision: The Power of
Conscious Collaboration”. From 3
keynote sessions to more than 10
breakout sessions and facilitated
work with the entire group over
the two days, participants got
to approach the art of working
together and dive into a rich
process for forming successful
“green teams” at their own
workplace.
With the urgency of caring for
our future growing every day, the
pursuit of sustainability is both
philosophically and practically
imperative. This year’s GSN
Congress brought the leaders
in the spa and wellness arena
together to connect, and ultimately
cause the changes that will propel
us towards an abundant, positive
and thriving future as vital people
living with a vital planet.

El Awe Spa en él Le Blanc de Cancún
cuenta con 19 salas de tratamiento,
incluyendo 4 master suites con bañeras
de hidroterapia, 3 suites para parejas,
1 Suite de Oro y 1 suite Vichy. La
espaciosa recepción y el área de ventas
son seguidas por un área de cambio que
está bien equipada y a partir de allí,
están las instalaciones de hidroterapia.
La sala de vapor con cromoterapia,
suave y relajante música con liricas
conteporaneas es lo que más destaca,
sin embargo también podrá disfrutar del
sauna, jacuzzi, experiencias en duchas,
agua a presion de hidroreflexología y
piscinas de hidroterapia con guía asistida
a través de todas las experiencias.

ninguno de estos servicios decepcionará,
recomendamos probar el Masaje Maya
Kukulkan.
El Masaje Maya Kukulkan es uno de
los tratamientos exclusivos de Awe
Spa, es un masaje de cuatro manos
con movimientos coreografiados a
los sonidos de la música de la selva y
diseñado para simular animales sagrados
como el jaguar, la serpiente y el águila.
Es una combinación que te transporta a
una realidad alternativa durante un viaje
de 80 minutos.
Awe Spa at Le Blanc Cancun features
19 treatment rooms including 4
master suites with hydrotherapy tubs,
3 couples suites, 1 Golden suite and
1 Vichy suite. The spacious reception
and retail area is followed by the wellequipped
changing area and from there,
the hydrotherapy facilities. The steam
room with chromotherapy and soft,
lyrical contemporary chill out music is
the highlight, however you can also
enjoy the sauna, Jacuzzi, experience
showers, hydro-reflexology jets and
hydrotherapy pools as an attendant
guides you through the experiences.
Awe Spa offers a range of facials, body
wraps and exfoliations and massages
in addition to beauty services such as
manicure, pedicure, waxing and hair
cutting and coloring. While any of these
services is sure not to disappoint, I
recommend trying out the signature
Kukulkan Mayan Massage.
The Kukulkan Mayan Massage is one of
the signature treatments at Awe Spa, a
four handed massage with movements
choreographed to the sounds of jungle
music and designed to simulate the
sacred animals of the jaguar, the snake
and the eagle. The combination of which
can transport you to alternative reality
during your 80-minute journey.

Una Experiencia Spa
JW Marriott, Cancun
El Spa de estilo Maya ubicado en el JW Marriott cubre una
impresionante area que se extiende por 35.000 pies cuadrados en
dos plantas. La planta principal alberga el gimnasio, el bar de jugos,
el jacuzzi y la amplia piscina con vistas a la laguna de Cancún y está
abierto a todos los huéspedes del hotel.
El segundo piso del spa ofrece vistas al mar azul del Caribe desde
las amplias zonas de cambio. El área de hidroterapia cuenta con
sauna y salas de vapor, experiencias en duchas, jacuzzi y piscinas
de inmersión en frío con iluminación ambiental.
Con una amplia gama de servicios faciales, tratamientos corporales,
masajes y servicios de salón el extenso menú ofrece algo para
todos. Recomendamos probar el Ritual de Hunab Ku, un masaje
tradicional maya que incorpora un masaje abdominal único para
ayudar al flujo de energía o un Xamen Ek, un tratamiento corporal
desintoxicante que usa lodos para eliminar toxinas y remineralizar
el cuerpo. Si prefiere una experiencia al aire libre también están
disponibles servicios de masajes en una palapa junto a la playa
donde se puede relajar con el sonido de las olas del océano.

A Spa Experience
The Mayan inspired Spa at JW Marriott spans an
impressive 35,000 square feet over 2 floors. The
main floor is home to the fitness facility, juice bar,
Jacuzzi and expansive lap pool with views of the
Cancun Lagoon and is open to all hotel guests.
The second floor of the spa offers views out to the
blue Caribbean Sea from the spacious changing
areas. The hydrotherapy area features both sauna
and steam rooms, experience showers, Jacuzzi
and cold plunge pools with ambient lighting.
With a range of facial services, body treatments,
massages and salon services the extensive menu
offers something for everyone. Try the Hunab Ku
Ritual, a traditional Mayan massage incorporating
a unique abdominal massage to aid the flow
of energy or a Xamen Ek, a detoxifying body
treatment using muds to eliminate toxins and
remineralize the body. If you prefer an outdoor
experiences massage services are also available in
a palapa by the beach where you can relax to the
sound of the ocean waves.
