The Norwegian Crafts Institute – a centre of intangible cultural heritage<br />

• The Norwegian Crafts Institute was established in 1987. Its objective is to safeguard<br />

traditional crafts and raise awareness of and respect for craft traditions, in accordance<br />

with UNESCO’s 2003 Convention on Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage.<br />

• The institute:<br />

– has worked as a UNESCO-accredited NGO since 2009 and plays a key role in<br />

the ICHNGO forum and the online magazine Heritage alive. Both activities are<br />

strongly linked to UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage from an international<br />

perspective.<br />

– was elected in 2016 as a four-year member of the Evaluation body for the<br />

Intergovernmental Committee of the 2003 UNESCO Convention.<br />

– runs projects for documentation and training in traditional crafts with funding<br />

from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture. The projects span<br />

from food production and textile handicrafts to boatbuilding and housebuilding<br />

techniques.<br />

– runs most of their projects in Norway, but also has broad experience from international<br />

projects run in the Czech Republic, Latvia, Hungary, Scotland, Bulgaria,<br />

Georgia and Iceland, The restoration of the wooden old town in Kuldiga<br />

resulted in the Europa Nostra prize in 2013.<br />

– administers the pilot project NordNet ICH with the objective of establishing<br />

a communication platform for the exchange and discussion of good safeguarding<br />

practices between the Nordic countries. Representatives from Finland,<br />

Sweden, Iceland and Greenland – mostly NGOs – constitute the project<br />

group.<br />

– administers related activities, such as the National Register of Craftsmen, the<br />

Secretariat of Rare and Protected Crafts and the network Advancing the Crafts.<br />
