STANDBY – Vole

On January 1st, 2010, Andermatt
Biocontrol took over the company
TOPCAT GmbH. Distribution and
production of TOPCAT products
is now carried out by Andermatt
Biocontrol in Grossdietwil. This includes
the TOPCAT traps and associated
tools, as well as the STANDBY
live traps.
Jean Malevez – Inventor of the
TOPCAT trap and founder of
TOPCAT GmbH
While he was looking for an alternative
to conventional vole control
methods, Jean Malevez developed the
TOPCAT trap in the 1990’s. Distribution
of the TOPCAT traps was done by
TOPCAT GmbH, which was founded
by Jean Malevez specifically for this.

The TOPCAT products have been on
the market since 2000. The trap is well
established especially on the Swiss
market. The sales abroad are continuing
to increase.
Later, the STANDBY live trap was
developed, tested and patented. The
system was successfully tested in a
research project at the University of
Berne from 2006 to 2009.
After all the years of intensive work
years, Jean Malevez decided to cut
back. In search of a suitable partner,
TOPCAT GmbH and Andermatt
Biocontrol came to an agreement.
Since January 1st 2010 Andermatt
Biocontrol produces and distributes
the products from TOPCAT GmbH.
Andermatt Biocontrol would like to

collaboration and excellent transfer of
know-how.
TOPCAT – The vole trap
The TOPCAT trap is easy to handle and
ensures an high rate of trapped voles.
TOPCAT is the trap of choice for control
of common vole or field mouse­
(Microtus­ arvalis)­ and water vole
(Arvicola­terrestris). The trap is positioned
in an inhabited vole tunnel. The
voles are captured from both tunnel
directions. This snap trap has a very
sensitive release mechanism and will
snap shut at a pressure of just 8 g. The
release mechanism is purely mechanical
with no bait or chemicals. All parts
of the TOPCAT trap are made of stainless
steel. Every piece of the TOPCAT
trap can be reordered separately.
The product line contains more products
than just the trap. The accessories
(searching rod, ground cutter, bracket,
post) are functional, simplify vole trapping
and increasing the efficacy of
traps.
STANDBY – The vole fence
The STANDBY system stops (re-)immigration
of voles into a protected area.
The STANDBY system is a participatory
system. Natural predators are systematically
involved in vole control.
The system consists of a fence and a
live trap. The fence is around 60 cm
high and is buried 20 – 30 cm into the
ground. This prevents voles from passing
into a protected area underground.
The fence cannot be bitten through by
the voles and will not rust even after
years in the ground. The STANDBY-
live traps are set up along a fence at a
distance of 25 m from each other. The
traps have hatches on both sides by
which voles can enter. Once trapped,
there is no chance of escape. Natural
predators such as foxes, cats, badgers
and ermines will open the box by lifting
the flip top and then steal the bait.
Predators benefit from the STANDBY
system so will regularly scan the area
along the fence. Traps are systematically
checked and emptied.
Distribution of TOPCAT and
STANDBY products
The TOPCAT products can be purchased
from distributors or directly
from Andermatt Biocontrol. The distribution
network at present consists
of about 80 suppliers in Switzerland,
Germany, Austria, France, Belgium
and Slovenia. Andermatt Biocontrol
is currently working on extending the
sales net.
The STANDBY system is exclusively
distributed by Andermatt Biocontrol.
