ing virus isolates are on the market for
plant protection (Switzerland, Germany,
Italy, Netherlands). These products
decisively ease the resistance situation
in affected countries. This brings
relief especially to organic farms, as
they again have access to highly effective
solutions to fight codling moth
with new granulose virus isolates.
Providing for the future with ABC-V15
New resistance incidents cannot
be ruled out in the future. In theory,
new resistance is probable wherever
virus isolates are used intensely,
which is the case in many organic orchards.
This is the reason Andermatt
Biocontrol is continuously developing
new virus isolates for codling moth
populations that are difficult to treat
(see AG-Journal 2010, p. 11 – 14). The
newest product, ABC-V15, has been
proved to be the most efficient generation
of the codling moth virus. Laboratory
tests on highly resistant codling
moth populations (graph 1) as well as
field trials on CpGV-M sensitive (graph
2) and resistant populations (graph 3),
show excellent responses to the new
isolate.
Registration strategy
Naturally, all virus isolates must be
registered before they can be bought
by growers. Thanks to the simplified
registration process for new virus isolates,
fast-track processing is guaranteed
at least at the EU-level. For the
Annex I inclusion of ABC-V15, submission
arrangements are already in
progress.
Continuation of the anti-resistance
strategy
The codling moth granulovirus will
maintain an important role in high
quality pest management strategy: on
the one hand, to use efficient, chemical
residue free CpGV products that
are also gentle to beneficials and on
the other, to prevent development of
resistance caused by chemical pesticides.
For countries showing CpGV-
M resistance, new virus isolates
have been registered ( MADEX Plus,
MADEX 100 or MADEX Max) or will
be authorized soon. ABC-V15 a new,
highly efficient virus isolate will also
be available in the future. In order to
continue an effective virulence management
strategy, it is our goal to register
ABC-V15 within the next 4 – 6
years, especially in countries where
there is resistance to former products.
Acknowledgements
Thanks to all our partners who conducted
the experiments with the new
virus isolates. Special thanks to Intrachem
Bio Italia, but also to the growers
who provided us with their orchards
for our numerous field trials.
