volumes incl. atlas of plates bound in 2 volumes. Paris,

browning and (mainly marg.) foxing in places, with atlas
containing 380 finely steelengraved plates, libr. stamp on
fly title as well on first plate of both vol. ‘V. Berthoud

New fully revised and enlarged edition of the best contemporary
dictionary of sciences, literature, arts, industry, agriculture and
commerce, which was first published in 1832 under the direction
of Courtin.

62. FELIBIEN DES AVAUX, Jean François (1658-
1733): Les plans et les descriptions de deux des plus belles
maisons de campagne de Pline le Consul. Avec des
remarques sur tous les bâtimens, et une Dissertation
touchant l’architecture antique & l’architecture gothique.

leaves + 189 p. + 23 p. + 7 (5 folding) engraved plates,
some hw. former owner’s names on end paper, on t.p.,
and on p. 61, calf binding on raised bands, red title label
on spine, gold tooled spine, ca. 1 cm cut off both spines,
rubb. a. bumped, corners a. edges scraped. [52212] 850.-
First edition. Jean Felibien des Avaux, French classicist architect,
was secretary to the Académie d’Architecture. At the time there
was considerable interest in ideals of the ancient world. In the
above work, Felibien presents his reconstruction of two villas
(the Laurentine and Tuscan) that Pliny the Younger so
affectionately details in his letters (2nd century AD). (In latin
with a French translationand copious notes). Respectively four
and three labelled plates illustrate the plan of each with the
surrounding gardens. Felibien also reproduces a text by the great
renaissance architect Scamozzi, that is his interpretation of the
Laurentine villa, pointing out inaccuracies according to Pliny’s
precise details, here in the original Italian with French translation.
The volume ends with a short dissertation (p. 169-189) promoting
the classical style over the gothic, the former ‘founded on nature’s
principles’, the latter ‘opposed to nature’, followed by a alphab.
index. Front endpaper partly detached, two folding plates with
tear the shorter one has been repaired with paperstrip, light
