Very rare Froben edition of the
works of Basilius Magnus, in a
fine binding. Known as Basil the
Great, bishop of Caesarea, a
leading churchman in the 4th
century, who had a profound
influence on theology in theory
and practice. The book’s last
chapter (p. 985-1006) relates
Basil’s life, written by Gregorius
Nazianzenus. “The principal
theological writings of Basil are
his «De spiritu sancto», a lucid

and edifying appeal to Scripture
and early Christian tradition, and
his books against Eunomius, the chief exponent of Anomoian
Arianism. He was a famous preacher, and many of his homilies,
including the «Hexaëmeron», a series of sermons on the opening
verses of Genesis and an exposition of the psalter, have been
preserved. His ascetic writings include the «Moralia» and
«Regulae» ethical manuals for use in the world and the cloister
respectively. His numerous letters reveal a rich and observant
nature, which, despite the troubles of ill-health, and ecclesiastical
unrest, remained optimistic, tender and even playful” (Encycl.

ancient funerary lamps found in the catacombs of Rome. Three
parts with in all 115 plates, engraved by Pietro Santi Bartoli;
each plate showing one lamp, image 15 x 12 cm. The first edition
was published in 1691.
Full collation: 4 leaves + 16 p. + 1 engr. t.p. + 36 plates (of 37,
pl. 35 is lacking); 15 p. + 1 engr. t.p. + 46 plates (small hole in
pl. 4 but outside the image of the lamp); 1 blanc leaf + 12 p. 1
engr. t.p. + 33 plates.
