dieses Werk zunächst für Naturfreunde und reisende
Naturforscher. Daraus entwickelte sich der erste
vollständige Reiseführer durch die Schweiz zur
Geburtsstunde des Tourismus. Das Werk gilt als

Ausgabe figuriert in Perrets Liste der 100
berühmtesten Bücher des Alpinismus. Der erste Teil
(Bd. 1) enthält neben allgemeinen Informationen
über das Reisen in der Schweiz (Förderung der
Gesundheit, die nützlichste und wohlfeilste Art und
der richtige Zeitpunkt des Reisens, Einrichtungen
für Fussreisende, Regeln für Reisende im Gebirge
etc.) auch ausführliche “Vorschläge zu Reiseplanen”
und ein räsonierendes Verzeichnis der Karten,
Reisehandbücher und Reiseschreibungen der
Schweiz, auch etwas Landes-Geschichte, sowie
Erklärungen der Kupfertafeln. / Der 2. Teil (Bde. 2
- 4) ist das eigentliche Reisehandbuch, in Form eines
Ortslexikons und die Bände tragen den Zusatztitel:
“Vollständiger Unterricht über alle
Naturschönheiten, geographische, physische und 169
historische Merkwürdigkeiten, so wie über die
mineralogische und geognostische Beschaffenheit
des Alpengebirges”. This guide is a milestone, marking the
beginning of mass-tourism and -alpinism in Switzerland and its
mountains. The rare second edition of the most famous handbook
for travellers in Switzerland, which was for the first édition
“essentially a geological and historical guide to the country”
(DSB IV/275), it now became the first complete travellers
handbook for Switzerland. This edition figures in Perret’s list of

This Underwood Stereoscopic Tour gives 100 positions, with
clothbound guide book by M.S. Emery, 274 pages, and 9
Underwood patent maps. The black cloth volume case,
containing the guide book and the photographs to be reproduced
in three dimensions by means of the stereoscope, resembles three
books in appearance and is intended to be placed on the shelf of
the library.
