Zur Ausgestaltung dieses neuen Profils trugen die Mitglieder einflußreicher Familien der Stadt mit ihrem Reichtum, ihrem Ansehen und ihren Beziehungen bei. Dies ergibt sich aus ihrem Wirken, das uns aus inschriftlichen Zeugnissen bekannt ist, besonderes Weih- und Grabinschriften. Diesen sollte auch die im folgenden zu besprechende neue Weihinschrift hinzugefügt werden. GEMIMI UND CLAUDII: DIE GESCHICHTE ZWEIER FÜHRENDER FAMILIEN VON THESSALONIKI seiner Patronin Geminia Olympias auf Beschluß der Stadt aufgestellt hat, worin die Geehrte als "άξιολογωτάτη θυγάτηρΤ. Αΐλ. Γεμεινίου Μακεδόνος τοΰ ' Ελλαδάρχου" bezeichnet wird 5 . Beim dritten Text handelte es sich um eine Grabinschrift, die sich auf einem Bruchstück eines Sarkophagen des 3. Jhs eingemeißelt ist: ihn stellten Geminia Olympias und ihre Mutter, Aequana Antiochis bereit. Der Tote ist Geminius Olympos. In demselben Sarkophagen wurde später eine früh verstorbene Enkelin von ihm beigesetzt 6 . Leben und Laufbahn von Geminius Makedon, der eigentlich das bekannteste Familienmitglied ist, hat, wie es zu erwarten war, das Interesse vieler Gelehrter auf sich gezogen. Grundlegend bleibt die von M. Tod anläßlich der Erstveröffentlichung der ersten Inschrift verfaßte Studie, der sich später Ch. Edson im wesentlichen anschloß 7 . Der neue Fund verändert sicherlich nicht unser Bild über den Werdegang von Geminius Makedon, ergibt jedoch Anlaß zur Bestätigung oder Verbesserung gewißer Teilaspekte. So zeigt etwa die Tatsache, daß sowohl Geminia Olympias als auch ihr Vater Geminius Makedon in der neuen Inschrift nur mit dem zweiten gentilicium der Familie (Geminius) erwähnt werden bei der Seltenheit dieses Namens in Onomastikon von Thessaloniki 8 , daß die früher geäußerten Bedenken bezüglich der Identität der in der Sarkophaginschrift gennanten Geminia Olympias und ihres Vaters Geminius Olympos mit den Familienangehörigen übertrieben sind und aufgegeben werden sollten, wie auch Edson vorgeschlagen hatte 9 . Im Gegensatz dazu ist nicht unproblematisch die Behauptung des letzteren, der Titel Έλλαδάρχης sei equivalent zum Titel άρχων τοΰ Αττικοί} Πανελληνίου 10 , zumal diese Ansicht von keinen Parallelen gestützt wird, wie schon B. Puech in ihrer jüngst veröffentlichten Studie über die Helladarchen bemerkte. Schon die Tatsache, daß sich Makedonien zur dieser Zeit an der delphischen Amphyktionie beteiligte, spricht bereits für die von derselben Forscherin vertretenen Ansicht, Geminius Makedon sei zu Ende des 2. oder zu Beginn des 3. Jhs n. Chr. Helladarch dieser Amphiktyonie gewesen 11 . Unser bisheriges Bild von der Laufbahn von Geminius sollte in einer weiteren Punkt korregiert werden: es handelt sich nämlich um die genaue 5.IGX2,1,187. 6. IGX 2,1,628 (3. Jh. n. Nach dem Reichtum des Mannes hat sich auch M. Rostovtzeff, The SocialandEconomic Historyofthe Roman Empire II (Oxford 19572) 650, Anm. 97 gefragt, der anläßlich der oben erwähnten Geminius' Spende von zehn Tausend Kubikelle Bauholz an die Stadt zur Bau einer noch nicht bekannten Basilika vermutete, das Holz stamme von dessen Landgütern—ähnlich zuletzt A.-J. Spawforth-S. Walker, "The WorldofthePanhellenion",7Ä575 (1985)87. Diese reizvolle Hypothese stützt sich offenbar auf den Ruf, den Makedonien als holzproduzierendes Land im Altertum genoß, muß aber durch neue und präzisere Angaben bestätigt werden. Über den Wert dieser Spende, wissen wir so gut wie nichts, denn einerseits fehlen uns m. W. Informationen bezüglich der Preis des Bauholzes im 2./3. Jh. n. Chr., andererseits sind die jüngere Preise des diokletianichen Preisedikts (s. R. Meiggs, Trees and Timber in the Ancient Mediterranean World [Oxford 1982] 365) zu unserem Thema von keiner Bedeutung. 8. Diesen Gentilnamen trägt noch nur ein gewißer Veteran namens M. Geminius Priscus Maco (?) (s. IGX 2,1, 661,2./3. Jh. n. Chr.), der allerdings u. W. keine Beziehung zu der Familie von Geminiihax. Derselbe Gentilname wird auch in Beroeabezeugt s. dazu A.
