In p. 196 he gives a marginal gloss on the Epistle to the Hebre\
V, 12, quibus lacté opus sit non solido cibo, in this strange fashior
brothchdn as[ec]oir duibni biad sonairt. This is, if he will allow me to u
an expression of his own, 'reiner Galimathias'. The true reading |
obviously [is] brothchdn as [c]ôir duib, ni biad sonairt 'it is brothchdn th'
is meet for you, not solid food' (brothchdn, gen. brothchain LB. 21
seems to mean a hot mess, LB. 11 3 b, 49, but hère 'milk-porridge'
some such soft food).
Again, in his 'textus restitutus' of the Cambray homily, we find t
foUowing wonderful forms :

At p. 277 he quotes a note from the Franciscan copy of the Lib
Hymnorum, and translates the passage bersiu lat e dotigernu, by 'i
tu eam domino'. He does not see that dotigernu, with its uninfected
stands for dot-tigernu and should be rendered by 'domino tuo'.
Having thus got, from his other récent works, some idea of Pr(
Zimmer's claims to criticise contemptu ac displicientiâ, a meritorio
scholar like Windisch, let us now look at his pamphlet.
P. 13. Hère he quotes, as from the Franciscan copy of the Lib
Hymnorum, the passage arslicht Neill nanngialaigh finit. For 'nanngi
laigh' (which he will excuse me for saying again is mère Galimathia
the ms. must hâve naoigiallaigh or nôigiallaigh , gen. sg. of nôigialla
'having-nine-hostages', the title of the famous King Niall, who reigm
from A.D. 384 to A.D. 41 1.
P. 15. He cites from the same ms. the préface to the Nicean cre»;
which States, according to Prof. Zimmer, that this creed was composfj
« ar dichor eirr Airr. » Is it not, to use his favourite expression, lu]
clarior, that for eirr the ms. must hâve erse or eirse and that this pa
sage means 'for casting out the heresy of Arius' ? Prof. Zimmer seeri
unable to copy accurately even from an easily read ms. like the Bec
