Nicolas Vanier a consacré une grande partie
de sa vie à suivre les traces des chercheurs
d’or d’Alaska.
À Dawson, la ville née de la ruée vers
l’or au confluent du fleuve Yukon et
de la rivière Klondike, Nicolas et ses
compagnons ont construit un radeau
fidèle à ceux qu’utilisèrent Jack London
et autres prospecteurs. Avec ce
radeau, Nicolas a descendu le fleuve
Yukon au cours de l’été 1986 comme
le firent des milliers d’aventuriers un
siècle plus tôt.
La Yukon Quest, l’une des plus grandes
et des plus difficiles courses de
traîneaux à chiens, reprend depuis
Whitehorse jusqu’à Dawson la piste
créée dans les montagnes à la fin du
XIXème siècle. Nicolas a participé deux
fois à cette course de 1 600 km et a
également suivi cet itinéraire au cours
de son expédition d’un an avec sa
femme et sa petite fille, alors âgée de
dix-huit mois (L’Enfant des Neiges).
Depuis plus de vingt ans, Nicolas a
accumulé les expériences dans le territoire
du Yukon et en Alaska, théâtre
de cet incroyable ruée vers l’or. Au total,
il a vécu plus de six ans dans ces
régions, pour le tournage du Dernier
Trappeur, pour l’entraînement de ses
chiens pour les grandes courses ou
pour ses expéditions à cheval, en radeau
ou en canoë.
Au cours de toutes ces années, Nicolas
a rassemblé des centaines de photos
d’époque et recueilli de nombreux
témoignages qui lui ont permis d’écrire
ce roman dont toute la première
partie est fidèle à l’Histoire.
Ce film est le fruit de cette expérience,
celle d’un aventurier devenu réalisateur.
Following in Jack
London's footsteps
Nicolas Vanier has spent much of his life
following in the footsteps of the Alaskan
gold miners.
In Dawson, the town founded during
the Gold Rush at the confluence of
the Yukon and the Klondike, Nicolas
and his team built a raft like the ones
Jack London and other prospectors
used. In 1986, Nicolas took that raft
down the Yukon, just as thousands of
adventurers had done a century before
him.
The Yukon Quest is one of the longest
and most difficult dogsled races
in the world. It runs from Whitehorse
to Dawson, following the trail blazed
through the mountains at the end of
the 19th century. Nicolas has participated
in the 1,600 kilometer race
twice. It was also part of his itinerary
in 1994-1995, during the year-long expedition
he made with his wife and
then eighteen-month old daughter for
his book and subsequent film L’Enfant
des Neiges (The Child of the Snow).
Over the past twenty years, Nicolas
has had many experiences in the
Yukon territory and Alaska, where the
incredible Klondike Gold Rush took
place. He has lived in the region for
a combined total of over six years:

shooting his film The Last Trapper;
training his dogs and racing them; and
leading expeditions on horseback, raft
and canoe.
Throughout these years, Nicolas has
collected hundreds of period photos
and personal accounts to help him
write his novel, the first part of which
is historically accurate.
The film Gold Below the Snow is the
result of his experience as an adventurer
turned filmmaker.
