The project has been led by New Media BC in partnership with its counterpart industry<br />

associations in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and PEI. Corporate partners<br />

have injected funding and technical resources into the project. As well, multiple aca<strong>de</strong>mic<br />

partners will lend their research capacity and knowledge to the initiative. This<br />

col<strong>la</strong>borative approach will ensure that the Interactive Canada investment benefits all<br />

provinces and makes good use of government funding by avoiding duplication of services<br />

and programs.<br />

Vision<br />

Our vision is to establish Canada as the best p<strong>la</strong>ce in the world to create and<br />

commercialize digital media applications. The problem we seek to address is how to<br />

boost capacity and accelerate competitiveness in Canadian digital media companies so<br />

that innovation can be more effectively captured and commercialized for the benefit of<br />

our country.<br />

Context<br />

Digital media, often called new media, is interactive digital content and services. It’s the<br />

stock forecast on your b<strong>la</strong>ckberry, the photo sharing application on your computer, the<br />

3D imaging software used for medical mo<strong>de</strong>ling and the simu<strong>la</strong>tion tools used for<br />

environmental analyses. Digital media inclu<strong>de</strong>s mobile content, e-learning, interactive<br />

<strong>de</strong>sign, Web 2.0, digital film and animation, digital entertainment and groundbreaking<br />

products for medical simu<strong>la</strong>tion, <strong>de</strong>fense applications and lifelong learning. Digital media<br />

content and services are pervasive and impact the lives of Canadians every single day. It<br />

is also one of the fastest growing, most profitably promising sectors in the world.<br />

There are over 3,200 companies in Canada that employ more than 52,000 people and<br />

generate annual revenues of more than $5.1 billion dol<strong>la</strong>rs to the Canadian economy4.<br />

Many major international digital media companies have chosen Canada for their<br />

operations, such as, Electronic Arts, Bioware, Disney, Ubisoft, THQ, Microsoft and<br />

Vivendi Universal Group. However, most Canadian-owned companies in this sector are<br />
