What
place does photography have at La Maison Particulière, the
exhibition space you have opened in Brussels?
Maison Particulière is an art
centre organising hangings around a theme thanks to loans from four
collectors and an invited artist. It is therefore these five people who
choose the works they want to see presented of their own volition.
Photography is currently a medium that has asserted itself with
many contemporary art collectors. At each hanging since our opening
photographic works have played a significant part in the exhibition.
Faîtes-vous une différence entre art contemporain
et photographie ? Do you see a difference between
contemporary art and photography?
Since its
invention, photography has been one of the media used by artists.
In our view, there are great photographers, as well as artists who
use photography as a medium for their artistic creation. It is not
always the same thing.
Who was the first photographer whose work you bought?
David LaChapelle. David LaChapelle.
Does the quality of the prints matter to you and do you look
for limited edition or original prints?
l’artiste. Yes, not only do we attach importance to the quality of
the prints but we insist that they are numbered and issued in the
smallest edition possible. This is one of the reasons we don’t collect
old photographs. On the other hand, it is obviously important to
know if the prints have been done under the authority of the artist.
What is your
latest passion in photography?
Angelo Musco.
Angelo Musco. He’s an Italian artist living
ayez acquise ? What was the first photograph you
bought?
Our
collection currently revolves around contemporary art
in various forms, particularly video, but not yet really
photography. But we possess a very beautiful photogram
by Pierre Savatier, called Organza, plis # 2.
Faites-vous une différence entre art contemporain
et photographie ? Do you see a difference between
contemporary art and photography?
Yes, of course. It isn’t a qualitative difference because
we place the two at the same level. Peter Downsbrough,
who we consider to be a very important artist, offers
works in space, sometimes close to architecture, as well
as videos and photographs. To our knowledge he doesn’t
hierarchize his different pieces, and everything expresses
a great coherence. It’s more about a difference in
approach, linked to our status as beginners in the world
of photography. We are at the same time more open to
discoveries and more hesitant in making choices: faced
with a photograph, without the necessary references,
we are afraid of making a mistake and regretting our
choice, either in an absolute way in that we’ll rapidly get
tired of the work, or in a relative way in coming to the
conclusion that, despite its qualities, it doesn’t fit with
the rest of our collection and our overall intention.
photographie ? As collectors, what do you get from
fairs that specialize in photography?
It’s a unique chance to discover a lot of
photographers in a single place and thus make unexpected
discoveries. It also benefits us as beginner enthusiasts.
Our taste is still being honed and we are not yet at the
stage with photography of looking for what we know
we like, which is, alas, perhaps already the case with
contemporary art. But we are always fighting against this
temptation to take the easy option!
Etes-vous particulièrement sensible aux tirages :
nombre, époque… ? Do you particularly care about
the number of prints, their era…?
Oui.
question.
Yes. Collectors all have this
fault of wanting to possess a unique work or at least a
limited edition. They don’t like the idea of production
in large quantities. As for the era, we haven’t yet had
the occasion to really ask ourselves the question. What
seems important to us is certainty of origin and the
authenticity of the print, its conformity with the wishes
of the artist, more than to know the date of the print.
What is your most recent passion in photography?
du photographe hongrois Tamas Dezso, « Here,
Summer of photography.
We were very
moved by an exhibition by the Hungarian photographer
Tamas Dezso, ’Here, Anywhere’, at Bozar Brussels as
part of the Summer of Photography. This exhibition
shows places abandoned after the end of the Communist
regime. These photos are both magnificent and chilling,
surreal, almost dream-like and sordid.
Quel artiste conseilleriez-vous de regarder à de
jeunes collectionneurs ? What artist would you
recommend young collectors to take a look at?
