48 EXPLORATIONDU SAHARA*tout, <strong>au</strong> lieu <strong>de</strong> constituer l'Oued Igharghar venant du sud,coulerait <strong>au</strong> contraire, s'il y avait <strong>de</strong> l'e<strong>au</strong>, du nord <strong>au</strong>sud pour aller vers la sebkha, c'est-à-dire l'élargissement<strong>de</strong> Matmat, où aboutirait <strong>de</strong> son côté l'Oued Igharghar ouOued si OudLUn nivellement précis pourrait seul donner<strong>de</strong>s preuves pour ou contre. Ce qui paraît démontré, c'estqu'en somme, il n'y a pas <strong>de</strong> lit proprement dit et que lapente générale est insignifiante.«C'est un système analogue à celui <strong>de</strong> l'Oued Ghir, où,malgré le mot oued, qui signifié littéralement rivière; il n'ya qu'une succession <strong>de</strong> chotts ou lacs. Ici, les chotts sontréduits à l'état <strong>de</strong> dayas, c'est-à-dire <strong>de</strong> cuvettes <strong>de</strong> peud'étendue, et les seuils ou dunes, fort enchevêtrés, occupentles cinq sixièmes <strong>de</strong> l'oued. »Cette observation, qui rectifie une erreur admise jusqu'àce jour, semble avoir frappé les yeux <strong>de</strong>s membres <strong>de</strong>làmission, dès leurs premiers pas dans la région <strong>de</strong>s dunes.Le 20, le bivouac fut transporté d'Aïn BouSemah à Matmat,à 18 kilomètres <strong>au</strong> sud-est. « L'Oued Sidi Bou Hania,dit lé colonel, arrive par l'est, dans la daya; à l'ouest,son lit, qui semble continuer, <strong>de</strong>vient l'Oued Igharghar.Le tout offre une pente peu appréciable, sans nivellementprécis.»Nos voyageurs rencontrèrent, à Matmat, une leoubà Vvénérée,sorte <strong>de</strong> m<strong>au</strong>solée élevé par les Chambâs* à la mémoired'une femme marabout, <strong>de</strong>vonue célèbre sous le nom<strong>de</strong> Lalla Meurdhia.C'est <strong>au</strong>ssi sur ce point qu'ils furent rejoints par quatrembkhftznis Chambâs, envoyés d'Ouarglâpour remplacer lesspahis <strong>de</strong> Tougourt et <strong>de</strong>stinés à suivre l'exploration danslé sud. Ils apportaient <strong>de</strong>s lettres du commandant supérieurdu cercle <strong>de</strong> Laghouat et <strong>de</strong> l'agha d'Ouarglâ, annonçant1. Kouba,clmpollo,2. L'un d'eux, ancienne connaissance du colonel,l'assura <strong>de</strong> son dévouement et <strong>de</strong> celui <strong>de</strong> tous lesChambâs.Le24, la mission se rendit à Hassi ould Miloud, marchantainsi dans le lit <strong>de</strong> l'Oued Igharghar, dont la configurationsemble frapper encore l'attention <strong>de</strong> son chef. « Ce lit, ditil,est <strong>de</strong> plus en plus indéterminé; c'est Une ban<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>dunes et <strong>de</strong> dayas, dont la largeur semblé varier <strong>de</strong> 2 à10 kilomètres et où l'on a <strong>de</strong> la peine à se figurer un thalwegquelconque. Elle fait tant <strong>de</strong> méandres vaguement<strong>de</strong>ssinés, que s'il y avait <strong>de</strong> l'e<strong>au</strong>, on <strong>au</strong>rait en somme unimmense lac allongé, où les contreforts <strong>de</strong> séparation <strong>de</strong>sdétours, émergeraient en forme d'îlots <strong>de</strong> sablel... Autantdire, comme il a été remarqué déjà, que <strong>de</strong>puis El Goug,il n'y a' pas, à proprement parler, <strong>de</strong> lit <strong>de</strong> l'Oued Igharghar.» Toutefois, à h<strong>au</strong>teur <strong>de</strong> Hassi oUld Miloud, le long <strong>de</strong> ladune, il y a apparence d'un lit ou cuvette allongée <strong>de</strong> 5 à6 kilomètres; mais cela ne change rien, en somme, à l'appréciationgénérale. On n'est môme pas d'accord dans lepays, pour savoir dans quel sens coulerait l'e<strong>au</strong>, s'il y enavait; mais l'e<strong>au</strong>, dans l'Oued Igharghar, c'est le domaine<strong>de</strong> la légen<strong>de</strong> arabe, On a vu couler l'Oued Mzab," l'OuedMia, etc. ; et là, il n'y a pas <strong>de</strong> doute ; mais personne, ni <strong>de</strong>la génération actuelle, ni <strong>de</strong> la génération précé<strong>de</strong>nte, n'ajamais vu couler l'Oued Igharghar.» Pour celui qui n'est pas prévenu, il n'y a là ni rivière,ni trace <strong>de</strong> rivière. Cependant, pour tous les indigènes, c'estbien un oued, dans lo lit duquel on chemine plus ou moins.Par «oued » il f<strong>au</strong>t entendre ici une sorte <strong>de</strong> dépression,plus ou moins interrompue çà et là, dans le genre <strong>de</strong> cequ'on est convenu d'appeler l'Oued Ghir : mais les chottsétant réduits par les dunes et par les niouvomonts duterrain,
