mot du PRÉSIDENTPRESIDENT’S messageDear colleagues,Since I took my first steps in the golf industry, I havegot to know this very unique world by participatingin as many QGSA events as possible and by takingit upon myself to take as many courses as myagenda and budget would permit. I am convincedthat the steps I have taken have made me a goodsuperintendent, but I am keenly aware that I stillhave a great deal to learn. One of those steps, becominga member of the QGSA Board of Directors, has been very rewarding for me, in several ways.First, I met people who were passionate about theirwork and had a desire to advance our profession.I had the pleasure and privilege of working withRobert Côté, Eric Ward and Christian Pilon, threePresidents with very different personalities but whohave one thing in common: they all share a genuineinterest in the superintendent’s profession andwere always generous with their time whenever theQGSA needed them.Communication is essential to every success, andI firmly intend to make the most of it to advanceour Association’s interests. We have the good fortuneof having modern technology at our disposalto help us get information out rapidly, and there areno good excuses for not being up on what’s goingon in our field.I therefore invite you to play an active role, to visitour website and to take part in the chat room to expressyour points of view. The more comments youmake, the more we’ll be in tune with your needs. For my part, I promise to continue working with thesame energy that I have demonstrated since I firstjoined the Board of Directors. I am sure that withour team in place and the cooperation of Gestias,Jacques LessardPrésidentwe will be able to make headway on the Association’smajor dossiers. In closing, I would like to say a brief word about thelast day of the first Tradeshow of the Quebec GolfIndustry. Many people expressed their opinionsabout the future of our industry, and a number ofcourses of action were proposed. No matter whathappens, we will always be important participantsin the solutions put in place. To that end, we mustmanage change, and not simply submit to it.I wish you all a promising start to the season, anexcellent year of golf and players who are happywith the magnificent courses you provide.Jacques Lessard, ASGQ PresidentBecoming a director also allowed me to see howmuch work goes into the events organized for ourmembers. Each one is a real team effort, and everyonehas a role to play. One instructor once said:“A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” Thatsentence has stayed with me, and whenever I haveto rally my team, it’s one of my favourite sentencesfor motivating members to work towards our commongoal: success.I have also had the chance to work with fellow directorswho face completely different challengesbut who are able, despite all kinds of constraints, todeliver top-shape golf courses at the same time asthey work diligently to advance the Association’sprojects. There are many other positive points, but one thingis sure: being a member of the Association’s Boardof Directors helps us grow, not only as superintendentsbut also as individuals.Today, it is my turn to step into the President’sshoes and continue the work of my predecessors.I am very honoured to be the new President and Iam aware how much pressure goes with the position.Pressure is an everyday part of our profession, and I know that I can handle it as long as I have thesupport of my colleagues.I have every confidence in the team around me.I can be the team’s conductor, but I cannot be aone-man band.Printemps 2011 7
