Caritas Tanzania embarks
on SDGs Operationalization
Caritas Tanzania conducted a
training on sustainable development
goals (SDGs) for its
diocesan Caritas directors and Gender
and Development coordinators during
its annual general meeting in January
2016; its aim was to let such stakeholders
‘hit the ground running’ when
it comes to implementing the SDGs.
Hitherto, unfortunately, during this
consultative period and even in the
previous processes involving the
millennium development goals and
their implementation there was very
little or no participation by members
of the general public.
awareness creation (all goals); advocacy
work on national policies (all goals);
policy dialogue (all goals); and,
monitoring implementation (all goals).
qué; briefing church leadership; developing
operational plans; developing project
proposal on priority SDGs; and,
lastly disseminating SDGs into different
levels: diocesan level, parish levels, etc.
Overall they appreciated the efforts
done hitherto by Caritas fraternity and
thanked Zan for having taken them
The training facilitated by Samuel Zan
Akologo, the national director of
social development at the Ghana
national catholic secretariat of was
interactive. Specifically, it ran thus: a
list of expectations was drawn from
the participants’ response to the three
questions advanced to them and
thereafter that one of gap and expectations
was referred from the concept
application document and the two
were tallied against each other. After
a discussion on the history of SDGs
and their making, their contents were
discussed upon in detail in light of the
Laudato Si teaching.
Participants were then asked to set out
criteria for the prioritization of the goals.
These are criteria agreed upon, that such
a goal to address: poverty, ignorance,
disease, hunger, gender, environmental
protection, both diocesan and national
development priorities and church
teaching. From all these, the following
five goals, in order of priority, were
considered important: goals 5,1,2,4 and
3. And again specific actions on priority
SDGs were listed thus: strengthening
available facilities (goal 4); raising
proposal for funding (all goals);
Zan Akologo facilitating training and group work.
The participants then agreed upon the
following steps to be taken: reporting
on the workshop; issuing a communi-
through the process. They looked
forward to implementation of related
projects and in future.
