From 2010 where Geoff Gaskin started
building his own portable demo jump
ramps and started his company hiring
riders and booking shows in Quebec
(Canada) to now, where he did numerous
shows (mainly with Wideopencrew-WOC
here or with US FMX riders in cities
such as Detroit in front of 50 000 people,
St-Louis 40 000, Syracuse NY 40 000); he
never stopped to fully dedicate himself on
wanting to learn bigger and better tricks,
spending lot of time training at his ride
spot and deciding to move to Georgia for
months in the winter to persue practicing
all year round. Geoff’s goals are to keep
upping his skills on the bike especially to
learn bigger flip variations (Fliptricks) that
will allow him to enter into the world’s
renowned competitions and show events.
Geoff is a passionated and hard worker
and there is no doubt that his
determination will bring him to his goals.
Let’s have a chat with him...
GMX: ONCE UPON A TIME?
GG: The first dirt bike I ever rode was a little 1990 Suzuki DS 80 that I had found down a trail near
my parents house in Ile-Bizard, QC. in the west island of Montreal. It was pretty beaten up, someone
had stolen it and left it there, I fixed it up and rode it for a week, till the owner heard I had it and
came knocking at my door to have it back, so I had to let it go... I was a sad 12 years old boy that day
(laughs)... Two years after that, my dad bought me a 1982 Suzuki RM 125 off of one of my buddies,
man I loved that bike even if it was old and clapped out. I painted it all black with spray cans and put
stickers on it. I really tought it was awesome (laughs)! I started hitting jumps with that bike until I
got a little too good for it and it wouldn’t hold up anymore. Then I got a 1998 Yamaha YZ 125 and a
pick-up truck when I was 16years old. About a month later, I bought a FMX ramp. Then, me and one
of my riding buddies at the time, tore down the local track we had in the woods and pushed it into a big pile of dirt that was going to be our landing.
Got hurt bad shortly after that so only ended up hitting my ramp a year later at an other riding spot we built in Pierrefonds, MTL. That’s where the FMX
jumping really all started for me... Unlike a lot of Fmx riders from my generation, I have never raced before being a jumper. Coming from a BMX background,
I just loved catching air... It’s been hard growing up riding where I’m from because of being so close to the city and very little riding spots but I
managed to make it happen and I take lot of pride in that.
GMX: YOUR BIKE A 2 STROKE OR 4 STROKE?
GG: I ride a Yamaha YZ 250 two stroke... I grew up on two strokes jumping freestyle and never had the interest of going to a four stroke for FMX... The
only four stroke I ever owned is my track bike a Yamaha YZ 250f.
GMX: RAMPS TO FLY?
GG: A usual take-off ramp is about 8,5 feet tall and 22 feet long and the landing ramp is 13 feet tall and 35 feet long.
The gap between the two ramps varies from 72’ to 80’ feet in distance.
GMX: HARDEST TRICKS?
GG: In terms of balls (laughs), it is a triple flip and from the technical aspect it is a bike flip off a quarter pipe.
