Abstract
The goal of the thesis is to design a vegetation cutting module to be attached to a
humanitarian demining robot, currently under studying at the PMAR lab, specifically
designed to work in the Vanni region in Sri Lanka.
The robot is adapted from a power tiller and it is designed to be economic, robust and easy
to repair. The vegetation cutter has to cut light and medium vegetation, constituted by
grass and bushes, as well as heavy vegetation constituted by palm leaves (the Sri Lankan
law forbids to cut palm trees). The vegetation cutting module has also to cut tripwires
activating fragmentation anti personnel landmines.
The module designed is composed by three cutting bars supported by a frame attached to
the power take off of the power tiller. Two of the three bars are hold vertically for cutting
palm leaves and bushes on the side, one is hold by the frame horizontally for cutting grass.
Each bar is actuated by a double effect oil cylinder: cylinders are connected in series.
A double effect cylinder moved by an eccentric wheel connected to the power take off
provides pressure to three actuators.
A navigation software for the robot has also been created.
