Prophylaxis for VTE in Hospitalized<br />
Me<strong>di</strong>cal Patients<br />
• Anticoagulant prophylaxis with UFH or LMWH has been<br />
described as an efficacious, safe, and cost-effective<br />
intervention to prevent DVT in me<strong>di</strong>cal patients.<br />
• Furthermore, the American College of Chest Physicians<br />
Guidelines on Antithrombotic Therapy gives anticoagulant<br />
prophylaxis in me<strong>di</strong>cal patients a grade 1A recommendation.<br />
• Despite these considerations, anticoagulant prophylaxis in atrisk<br />
hospitalized me<strong>di</strong>cal patients is administered to only<br />
16% to 33% of such patients , whereas up to 90% of at-risk<br />
surgical patients receive prophylaxis.<br />
