IL MANTELLO
(2003)
Tutti i lavori presentati alla
Biennale da Francesca
Tancini, realizzati tra il 2001
e il 2005, affrontano il tema
della passione come
sentimento totalizzante e non
controllabile. Pur nella diversità
del trattamento stilistico
e narrativo, questi quattro
fumetti sono tutti ispirati
a testi letterari (Calvino,
Buzzati, Petrarca, McEwan)
e fanno riferimento a documenti
figurativi e iconografici tipici
dell'epoca in cui sono
ambientati: dialogano con la
pittura coeva per i costumi e le
ambientazioni, con l'architettura
per la costruzione delle tavole
e la loro scansione in vignette.
NEVICATA (2003)
IL MANTELLO (2003)
All the selected works,
realised between 2001 and
2005, deal with the topic of
passion as an absolutizing
and uncontrollable feeling.
Even though graphically and
narratively different, all of the
four works are inspired by
literature (Calvino, Buzzati,
Petrarca, McEwan); they find
visual references in those
iconographical elements
typical of the period in which
the story takes place:
paintings for costumes and
environments, architecture
for page's grid and structure.
THANATOS
(2004)
Thanatos è il “fratello”
oscuro di Eros, la forza
distruttiva che alberga
nell’uomo, l’estratto di ogni
pulsione omicida. Il video
Thanatos esplora questo
scuro labirinto dell’essere
umano, i più bui istinti
dell’energia sessuale. Illustra
parti del corpo femminile
nella loro bellezza sensuale,
mettendole a contrasto con
l’atto del crimine più
mostruoso perpetrabile
contro la donna – la violenza
sessuale. Il video è un
tentativo di sublimare l’atroce
sofferenza della vittima
attraverso bellezza ed
erotismo.
Durante l’aggressione alla
Bosnia Erzegovina le violenze
sessuali venivano perpetrate
sistematicamente, in una
strategia di guerra volta a
distruggere le donne, radici
della nazione. La donna
violata è ridotta al silenzio dal
senso di vergogna
internazionalizzato e dalla
paura della stigmatizzazione.
Come artiste che hanno
vissuto la guerra e come
donne, le due autrici hanno
voluto modellare la brutalità
in atto artistico e squarciare il
velo di silenzio.
TITLE: THANATOS
(2004)
Thanatos is Eros' dark
"brother", the destructive
force inside man, it is the
extract of all murderous
urges. The video piece
"Thanatos" explores this
darkest labyrinth of the
human being, the darkest
instincts of sexual energy.
It shows parts of the
woman's body in all its
sensual beauty, contrasting it
to the act of the most
monstrous crime against a
woman – rape.
The piece is an attempt to
sublimate the victim's
dreadful suffering through
beauty and eroticism.
During the aggression against
Bosnia and Herzegovina,
rapes were carried out
systematically, as part of a
war strategy to destroy
women, the roots of a nation.
She, the violated woman, has
been silenced by the
internationalized sense of
shame, the fear of stigma.
As female artists who have
experienced war, but above
all as women, we felt the
need to shape brutality into
an artistic act and thus, at
least for a moment, break the
veil of silence.
(2004-2005)
Il progetto consiste nella
ideazione di un manuale per
autorganizzarsi in una citta'
strutturato in schede
tematiche. Il gruppo, detto
"La squadra mobile", propone
delle lezioni che si terranno
negli spazi pubblici della città
e alle quali i cittadini sono
inviatati a partecipare e a
correggere le schede stesse.
Il progetto ha l'obiettivo di
trattare problematiche reali
giocando sul limite tra l'ironia
e la serietà. La squadra
mobile si mette in gioco
dialogando con gli abitanti di
una città come Napoli, famosi
per la loro capacità di
risolvere i problemi con la
creatività. Le artiste, vestite
con delle divise, per
raggiungere i luoghi scelti si
muovono con un mezzo
proprio, un risciò attrezzato
per l'occasione con lo scopo
di attirare l'attenzione della
gente sulle lezioni. Nella sede
espositiva, il giorno
dell'inaugurazione verrà
tenuta una delle lezioni del
manuale; verranno poi
appese le schede corrette dai
cittadini, un video di
documentazione e una
spiegazione di tutto il
progetto.
AUTORGANIZZATO. IDEE E
PROPOSTE CREATIVE
(2004-2005)
The project consists in the
creation of a manual for selforganizing
inside the city. It is
conceived as a series of
index cards which catalogue
different areas of everyday
life (living, economy, politics,
transportation.) The group
called "La squadra mobile"
proposes a series of lessons
in the public space in the city
of Naples and the citizens are
invited to partecipate rather
than to correct the index
cards or to create new
instructions for self
organizing. The project has
the objective to deal with real
issues of everyday life,
playing with the limit
between an ironic and a
serious approach. La squadra
mobile confronts the
habitants of the city, being
famous for their creativity in
problem solving. The artists
move around in a vehicle, a
riscio modified for the
occasion and container of self
organized examples captured
during their travels around
the streets of Naples. In the
protected space, the index
cards modified together with
the citizens will be shown,
and a lesson on selforganization
will be
performed.
Nella terminologia
informatica, la parola “glitch”
indica l’inatteso o l’errore
prodotto da un calcolatore
dopo un errore di calcolo o un
errore di sistema. “Glitch”
design è però anche una
tecnica creativa che mira a
recuperare questi errori e a
sfruttarli in quanto tali, ossia
come l’espressione più pura
di una sensibilità digitale. I
file di dati letti dagli applicativi
audio per produrre rumori
caotici transcodificati, “bugs”
salvati, iperutilizzazione di
funzioni “aleatorie”,
saturazione della memoria
per ottenere errori delle
schede grafiche,
riappropriazione di applicativi
o di tecniche obsolete e
instabili, ecc. Qualsiasi mezzo
è buono per indurre
l’elaboratore a produrre delle
situazioni di destabilizzazione
logica, trasformando così un
inoffensivo strumento per
l’ufficio o per la casa in un
vettore di decostruzione /
ricostruzione post cut-up, che
suddivide il codice in
brandelli, mutila le
applicazioni, bascula da uno
stato a un altro, produce
casualmente un significato
senza determinarne una
forma o un destinatario
precisi.
The word 'glitch', in
computer terminology, refers
to the unexpected or to the
error that the computer
makes when there is a
mistake in a calculation or a
system failure. But ‘glitch'
also describes a creative
technique that sets out to
recuperate these errors and
to exploit them as they are,
in other words, as the purest
expression of digital
sensitivity. Files of data read
by audio programs to
produce transcoded chaotic
sound, saved viruses, the
excessive use of ‘random'
functions, video card failure
through memory saturation,
the reuse of obsolete,
unstable software and
technics, and so on. Anything
goes as long as it logically
destabilizes the computer,
and in doing so, transforms
this inoffensive tool for the
office or home into a vector
for post cut-up
deconstruction/reconstruction
which breaks code apart,
mutilates applications,
swings from one state to
produces meaning that has
no predetermined form or
MAKING THE FEATHERS FLY
(2004)
La realizzazione brutale dei
pezzi di Nicolas Tourre,
sottoposti così come sono a
rudimentali e improbabili
manipolazioni tecniche, fanno
del quadro uno spazio
grottesco e ostinato in
l’artista moltiplica in maniera
irrefrenabile gesti di sacrificio.
Piume, pietre, spari: diversi
elementi associati
eterogeneamente alla
flessibilità della pittura, in cui
il pittore non formula più la
superficie pittorica in un
qualsiasi stretto rapporto con
l’immagine. Vestito di effetti
derisori, tagliato e intagliato o
colpito da pallottole, il quadro
sembra opporsi
ferventemente al piano liscio.
Quasi oggetti-forme, il quadro
tenta di dar vita a
un’incarnazione, agitando la
superficie, anche se ciò
dovesse significare far volare
le piume.
MAKING THE FEATHERS FLY
(2004)
The brutal crafting of Nicolas
Tourre’s pieces, submitted as
they are to rudimentary and
improbable technical
manipulations, makes the
painting a grotesque and
obstinate space in which the
artist compulsively multiplies
gestures of sacrifice.
Feathers, stones, gunshots:
several heterogeneous
elements associated with the
suppleness of paint, where
the painter no longer
formulize the pictorial surface
in any strict relation to the
image. Dressed up in
derisory effects, cut and
carved up or hit by bullets,
the painting seems fervently
opposed to the flat plane.
Formed rather as an object, it
attempts to give rise to an
incarnation, with the ruffling
of the surface, even if that
means making the feathers fly.
fuoriescono, alla sua
apertura, come sangue
traboccante. Oltre il limite
della carnalità e della pura
forma estetica, si celano le
passioni primordiali ovvero gli
archetipi dei nostri sensi che
accompagnano l’uomo sin
dall'infanzia. Intimità ormai
violate dall’incombente
divenire del tempo: le
passioni, nell'immaginario
collettivo, sfuggono ormai
dominate dal mondo
razionale. Nel mio lavoro il
senso del ricordo (trattenuto
dalla rete rossa effetto degli
intrecci del filo) esplode
come uno squarcio temporale
che, nell’atto d’aggredire
l’individuo e nel furore del
gesto, contestualmente,
lascia traccia indelebile nella
memoria della sua forza
devastante.
Passioni frenetiche entrano
nelle stanze dei ricordi e
furtive svaniscono lasciando
una traccia che spesso si
manifesta dunque in tutta la
sua violenza.
BROKEN PASSIONS
(2004)
Time and space are gleaming
tears like cold tables of a
surgery room.
Broken Passions like
dissecting a body full of
hopes and memories pouring
out and overflowing such as
blood when it’s made a rent.
Exceeding the limit of
carnality and aesthetic sense,
there are primordial passions,
the archetypal of our
sensations coming on with
man from the origins.
Violated privacy by becoming
time: Passions - in general
imaginary – get away just
submitted to the world of
reason.
In my work sensation of
remembering (closed by the
red network of wires)
explodes such as a temporal
tear that, attacking fellow,
leaves an indelible and
devastating sign.
Frantic passions enter
memorial rooms and they
creep out leaving a sign that
often reveals with all its
violence.
THE MAGIC OF SEDUCTION
(2003)
La magia della seduzione
incarna le preoccupazioni
dell'artista per le operazioni
belliche senza fine degli Stati
Uniti e per la recente guerra
contro il terrorismo
internazionale o l’estremismo
islamico guidato da Al-Qaeda.
L’arroganza degli Stati Uniti
come forza politica
dominante crea rabbia
crescente nei gruppi
musulmani integralisti.
Gli americani incitano conflitti
nei quali loro stessi si
attribuiscono poi il ruolo di
salvatori. Dall’altro lato vi è il
fenomeno dell’estremismo
nel nome dell’Islam – e la
tenacia del suo scopo.
Appassionatamente sedotti
dagli ideali, i seguaci
irriducibili giungono al
sacrificio della loro stessa vita
senza esitazione.
Questo concetto di sacrificio
personale e di appassionata
determinazione suscita più
timore e fascino di qualsiasi
altra arma tecnologica
superiore. Il genere umano
non ha imparato la lezione
della lunga storia di sangue.
Le conquiste della civiltà
umana sembrano fragili come
mai in precedenza.
Le tentazioni pericolose sono
ancora qui, perfino dopo
migliaia e migliaia di anni di
evoluzione.
THE MAGIC OF SEDUCTION
(2003)
The Magic of Seduction
embodies my concerns about
the never-ending war
operations of the U.S., and
the latest war against
International terrorism or the
Islamic extremism led
by Al-Qaeda.
The arrogance of the U.S. as
a dominant political force
creates growing anger within
radical Muslim groups.
Americans incite conflicts in
which later they appoint
themselves as saviors.
On the opposite side, there is
the phenomenon of
extremism in the name of
Islam – and the tenacity of its
purpose. Passionately
seduced by the ideals,
unwavering followers even
sacrifice their own lives
without hesitation… this
concept of self-sacrifice and
passionate determination is
more scary and fascinating
than any other superior
technological weapon.
The human kind has not
learnt the lessons from the
long bloody history.
The achievements of the
human civilization seem
fragile like never before.
Dangerous temptations are
still here, even after
thousands and thousands
SAINTS
(2005)
Un’installazione di quadri
pendenti. I quadri esposti alla
luce diretta cambiano
aspetto. L’installazione è
composta dalla distribuzione
di grandi quadri che non sono
appesi al muro ma che
dividono e costruiscono lo
spazio dal pavimento al
soffitto, da muro a muro.
L’installazione crea uno
spazio di presenza spirituale
immediata. Non riguarda il
sentire religioso, quanto
piuttosto l’alienazione dal lato
spirituale della società
contemporanea. Questa
installazione ci porta più vicini
al mondo abitato dagli essere
soprannaturali, gli arcangeli e
i santi. Vuk Mitevski mira a
ricreare, non per mimesi, la
calma dei templi religiosi, la
minuscola presenza umana e
la grandezza del mondo
spirituale. Molti atei e
agnostici hanno riconosciuto
le qualità tranquillizzanti dei
luoghi spirituali e molte
persone religiose hanno
avvertito la spiritualità dei
templi dedicati a un Dio
diverso da quello che
pregano. Questa installazione
porta lo spirituale nello spazio
secolare e secolarizza gli
spazi spirituali. Come le arti
hanno sempre fatto e sempre
faranno.
SAINTS
The installation of hanging
pictures. The pictures
exposed to directed light
change their appearance.
The installation is made by
distribution of large pictures
that are not hanging on the
walls but divide and build the
space from the floor to the
ceiling, wall to wall.
The installation creates space
of immediate spiritual
presence. It is not about
religious feeling, but rather
about the alienation from
the spiritual side of the
contemporary society.
This installation brings us
closer to the world inhabited
by supernatural beings,
archangels and saints.
Vuk Mitevski aims at
recreating, not by mimesis,
the calmness of religious
temples, the miniscule
human presence and
greatness of spiritual world.
Many atheists and agnostics
acknowledged the
tranquilizing qualities of
spiritual places and many
religious persons felt the
spirituality of temples
devoted to a God who is not
the one they worship. This
installation brings spiritual
into secular space and
secularises the spiritual
spaces. As the arts always
did and will always do.
I WANT MY STAR
(VOGLIO LA MIA STELLA)
(2003-2004)
Nel progetto I want my star
(Voglio la mia stella) l’artista
ha tentato di amalgamare in
maniera intuitiva l’innocenza
infantile, il mito e l’attualità
politica. Ogni bambino,
quando alza la testa verso il
cielo, sceglie la sua stella del
destino. Un antico mito
balcanico, e perfino
universale, dice che quando
una persona muore nel cielo
scompare una stella. A
questo proposito Rudina
Xhaferi
pensa di affermare l’archetipo
dell’uguaglianza, in cui tutti
hanno il diritto di avere la loro
stella.
Oggi gli albanesi chiedono
anche loro questo antico
diritto: di avere la loro stella
nella galassia europea.
I WANT MY STAR
(VOGLIO LA MIA STELLA)
(2003-2004)
In the project I want my star I
tried in the intuitive manner
to complement childish
innocence, the myth and
political actuality. Every child
when he raises his head up
to the sky, he chooses his
own star of destiny. An
ancient Balkanic myth, and
even universal, says that
when one person dies a star
in the sky disappears as well.
In this respect Rudina Xhaferi
thinks of affirming the
archetype of equality where
all the people have the right
to have their own star.
Albanians at present demand
as well this ancient right: to
have their own star in the
European galaxy.
WAHID
(PERFORMANCE E VIDEO)
(2003)
MAQBARA
(INSTALLATION)
(2005)
La performance Wahid ha
luogo durante l’inaugurazione
della mostra: l’artista si siede
al centro dello spazio su un
tessuto nero in direzione
della Mecca (est). Indossa
una djellaba nera che lo copre
scoprendo solo le mani e nel
silenzio recita, con voce
media, 99 volte e per 99
secondi, la parola "Wahid”.
Il video Wahid è un film in
bianco e nero che ripropone
la performance; è una traccia
della presenza dell’artista
durante l’esposizione.
Sarà proiettato sulla parte
bassa di un muro orientato
a est. "Wahid" significa uno,
il solo e l’unico. Per l’autore,
musulmano, significa anche
Allah (Dio). Nell’Islam Dio ha
99 nomi. La performance e il
video simbolizzano l’apertura
ad altre culture e religioni
del mondo.
Maqbara (cimitero) è un
insieme di 99 coni in tessuto
bianco illuminati da ampolle
installate al loro interno. Ogni
33 coni disegnano una foglia
sul suolo, e le tre foglie sono
orientate alla Mecca. Questa
installazione si ispira alla
danza religiosa dei dervisci
rotanti ed è un omaggio alle
vittime del recente tsunami
asiatico.
WAHID
(PERFORMANCE E VIDEO)
(2003)
MAQBARA
(INSTALLATION)
(2005)
The Wahid performance
takes place during the
opening of the exhibition: the
artist sits on a black fabric at
the centre of the space,
facing towards the Mecca
(eastwards). He is wearing a
black djellaba that covers him
completely, leaving out only
the hands. Amidst the silence,
he repeats the word “Wahid”
99 times in 99 seconds, with
an average voice.
The Wahid video is a B&W
movie which revives the
performance: it is an evidence of
the artist’s presence during the
exhibition. The video will be
projected on the lower part
of a wall facing eastwards.
“Wahid” means one, the
sole and the only. To the
author, a Muslim, it also
means Allah (God). In Islam,
God has 99 names. Both the
performance and the video
symbolize the opening to
other cultures and religions of
the world. Maqbara (graveyard)
is a set of 99 cones in white
fabric lit by internal cruets.
Each 33 cones trace a leaf on
the floor and all three leaves
point at the Mecca.
This installation draws
inspiration from the religious
dances of the whirling
dervishes and is a tribute to
the victims of the recent
Asiatic tsunami.
La lunghezza della mia opera
è molto maggiore che non la
sua larghezza perché voglio
che, per via della prospettiva,
gli spettatori vedano i disegni
piccoli quando si avvicinano
invece di percepire l’intera
composizione. Questo è il
punto di vista di chi ha
provato la passione. Quando
ti allontani dalla
composizione, cominci a
percepire la rosa formata dai
disegni più piccoli. Il punto di
vista dal quale si può
osservare la rosa è il punto di
vista di una persona che
riesce a guardare al desiderio
proprio o di un’altra persona
dall’esterno. Per mostrare
questo dilemma dei punti di
vista delle persone,
rappresentato dai molti
disegni interni alla
composizione e dalla
complessità del quadro in sé,
ho usato la rosa, che è
associata all’amore e alla
passione. Il risultato è che
alla fine ho semplicemente
riprodotto una rosa,
nonostante tutti i miei sforzi
per essere originale.
UNTITLED
My work is much longer than
larger because I want the
viewers to see small
drawings due to the
perspective when they look
closer to it instead of
perceiving the entire
composition. This is the
viewpoint of the one who felt
the passion. When you step
away from the composition,
you will start to perceive the
rose formed by the small
drawings. The standpoint
where the rose can be seen
is the viewpoint of a person
who can manages look at the
desire of another person who
or himself/herself from
outside. In order to show this
dilemma of people's
viewpoints, as opposed to
the many drawings within the
composition as well as the
complexity of the picture
itself. I have used the rose,
which is associated with love
and passion, and as a result,
what I have made is only the
picture of a rose, despite all
my efforts for being original.
L’amore è una passione tanto
grande da dare al cacciatore
gli si parano innanzi nella sua
battuta. Tuttavia, per quanto
possa essere grande la sua
passione, essa evapora
quando viene pronunciata
una semplice frase, un
incantesimo antico che
sembra essere ripetuto
dall’inizio dei tempi! La forma
di questo fumetto prende in
prestito alcuni elementi dal
noto gioco da tavolo (quello
del titolo, NdT) per mostrare
la natura gioconda
dell’amore. Trae inoltre
But however great this
passion is, it evaporates
when a simple phrase is
uttered,
an ancient spell which seems
to be repeated from the
beginning of time! The comic
form borrows elements from
the well-known tabletop
game to show the playful
nature of love. It is also
inspired by the lonely quests
of George Perec and Chris
la guerra dei kamikaze, dei
e dai contenuti delle notizie,
l’approvazione ideologica alle
azioni militari. Per un divertente
il giornalista nel cartone è
vittima di un estremo sentimento
e come un vero kamikaze si
non per egoismo ma per
paura di essere incompreso e
anche, forse, perché le sto
preservando per meglio
attribuire loro un valore.
È per questo che nella mia
opera non ho fatto apparire
che alcune parti del volto,
preferendo celare il resto,
perché l’occhio dell’osservatore
si focalizzi esclusivamente
su quello che voglio ben
illustrare. Nella mia opera ho
utilizzato il ritratto del volto
perché il volto è la parte del
corpo più espressiva.
SANS TITRE
(2005)
There are a number of
emotions in me that I am not
yet ready to unveil... not out
of selfishness but rather for
fear of being misunderstood,
and also, maybe, because
I am preserving them in order
to better attaching a value to
them. For this very reason in
my work I only featured
some parts of the face, while
hiding the rest, so that the
viewer’s eye can focus solely
on that which I want to
illustrate well. In my work
I used the portrait of a face
because the face is the most
expressive part of the body.
CASQUE MANDARIN
(2003)
Elmo mandarino è una
stupefacente installazione in
due parti: una testa modellata
in fusione e un elmo
meccanico autonomo.
Quest’ultimo possiede due
braccia articolate, ciascuna
delle quali tiene una siringa
pronta ad iniettare un siero
per normalizzare il
comportamento. Xu Zhe ha
proiettato la sua stessa
immagine nella testa... una
satira graffiante nella quale la
gente accetta senza colpo
ferire il mondo che viene loro
proposto.
MESSAGE PLASTIQUE
(2005)
Nella mia pittura proseguo
una discussione intavolata più
di 7000 anni fa. Per me è un
modo di perpetuare un modo
di vivere e di pensare
ancestrale. Nel mio intimo vi
è un bene prezioso,
un’eredità dei miei antenati
che divulgo attraverso forme
realizzate con un grafismo
personale fatto di delicatezza
e purezza di tratto e di colori
caldi, allo scopo di restituire i
miti antichi costantemente
rinnovati.
MESSAGE PLASTIQUE
(2005)
In my paintings I further a
discussion laid upon the table
more than 7000 years ago. It
is a way for me to perpetuate
an ancestral way of life and
of thought. In my intimate
self there is a valuable good,
an inheritance from my
predecessors that I
disseminate by means of the
forms created with a
personal graphics made of
delicacy and purity of stroke
and warm colours, with a
view to rendering the ancient
myths under a constantly
renewed form.
