Is it possible to debunk hoaxes and urban legends which<br />
– on the press or on television, via social media, word<br />
of mouth or other daily communication channels, but<br />
aboveallontheweb–periodicallycausedamagetoaluminium’simage,leveraging,aboveall,onthehumanbeing’s<br />
most ancestral fears, such as those linked to food and<br />
health?<br />
Forthelightmetalindustrytheanswerisnotdevoidofimportance<br />
if we consider that, over time, aluminium was repeatedly<br />
the target of unjustified attacks. How could we<br />
forget, for instance, among the most widespread unfoundednewsitemsthatcirculatedmainlyontheweb,theone<br />
stating that “high doses of aluminium in the body are associatedtotheonsetofosteoporosisandAlzheimer’sdisease”,or“thisishowtoremovealuminiumfromyourbrain<br />
before it unleashes Alzheimer’s disease”.<br />
Thehypothesisthatthismetalcouldbethecauseofsuch<br />
a feared and disabling disease surfaced for the first time<br />
in 1965 and since then it periodically reappeared in spite<br />
of repeated and qualified refutations. Often this assertion<br />
is based on pseudo-research and statements by so-called<br />
experts and it is therefore necessary to challenge it imme-<br />
