BolzanoBozenMAGAZINE 16 bm Nr. 3•2012 The Christmas spirit never fails to captivate Traditional arts and crafts, the candles, the scent of cinnamon and almonds, the mulled wine, the Christ- mas carols – these are the essential ingredients of Christmas in Bolzano, with some novelties added to make for a really magical Christmas atmosphere.
the 29 th november will see the lights go on, ushering in what is probably the most beautiful Christmas market south of the Alps. A whole range of attractions in the supporting programme await the visitor, ensuring that the market keeps its fascination for young and old alike. arts anD crafts LivE Special attention is being paid this year to South Tyrolean arts and crafts, with a dedicated stall where visitors can watch various craftsmen and craftswomen as they work. Every Saturday afternoon groups of musicians from various parts of South Tyrol will perform traditional Christmas music on their wind instruments from the balcony of the Merchants’ building. In addition, the whole town centre will host a series of Advent concerts over the weekends. Any event which attracts thousands of visitors has to ensure that the impact on the environment is kept to a minimum. This is why differentiated litter bins are placed all around the market, inviting visitors to separate their litter. ProgrammE for chiLDrEn anD thE minicLub Naturally, children are the focus of attention at the Christmas market, with toys, games and all manner of edible delicacies. Each exhibitor offers a child-friendly activity and at weekends the ‘miniclub’ shows children how to make Christmas decorations. thE Way of thE christmas cribs Bolzano’s Christmas market is not confined to the historical town centre. The way of the cribs leads from the centre over the Talfer bridge and along Corso Libertà to the district of Gries and the crib museum in the Benedictine abbey. This can easily be reached on foot but a shuttle bus service is also available. tEn yEars of christmas anD soLiDarity Christmas and social commitment should go hand in hand. The tenth anniversary of the ‘solidarity market’ on the Kornplatz will be celebrated by the exhibitors together with the various charities, offering arts and crafts from all over the world in support of various social projects. Who’s afraiD of thE ‘KramPus’? Santa Claus and his naughty counterpart, the ‘Krampus’ are important traditional figures of Alpine Christmas lore. Historical masks of these characters are on display throughout Advent in the Dominikanerplatz square and in the civic museum.
