News Developments FRANK MILLER LUMBER SUPPLIES QUARTERSAWN HARDWOOD FOR AWARD-WINNING FLOORING Acme Floor Company, Lenexa, Kansas, has won the “Best Commercial Wood Flooring” award for its installation of the flooring in Helzberg Hall, the 1,600-seat concert venue at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, and the current home of the renowned Kansas City Symphony. Supplied by Frank Miller Lumber, the flooring in Helzberg Hall was constructed and installed from more than 20,000 square feet of 3-inch Red Oak and features a floor-to-ceiling aesthetic showcasing a variety of North American Hardwoods. Helzberg Hall was designed by internationally renowned architecture firm Sadie Architects, which collaborated with Acme Floor Co. to create a space that showcases the delicate acoustics of solo concerts, chamber music and even full orchestras. “We feel privileged that Frank Miller was chosen by Acme Floor Co. to supply the Hardwood used in the architecturally significant Kauffman Center,” said Dan Hackett, president and CEO of Frank Miller. News about North American industrial Hardwood consumers and overseas updates, including mergers, plant expansions, association activities and personnel APPALACHIAN HARDWOOD MANUFACTURERS PROMOTES VERIFIED SUSTAINABLE Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers Inc. (AHMI), based in High Point, N.C., recently participated in domestic and international trade shows to promote verified sustainable Hardwoods. According to AHMI their mission continues to gain interest and attention from Hardwood consumers around the world. An exhibitor at the sixth Dubai Wood Show, the Appalachian Hardwood Verified Sustainable booth was located in the American Hardwood Pavilion along with 15 U.S. Hardwood exporting companies and four associations. “There was a strong interest in Appalachian Walnut, Appalachian Ash and Poplar,” AHMI president Tom Inman said. NWFA ANNOUNCES 2012 DEGREE RECIPIENTS The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) announced its 2012 Degree recipients during its Wood Flooring Expo in Orlando, Fla. The Degrees were presented during an awards luncheon held recently. A total of 51 members earned NWFA degrees in 2012, bringing the total since the program began to 781. Master Craftsman Degrees are awarded to individuals who have achieved the craftsman degree, who have attended or served as an instructor at an NWFA advanced or expert school and/or has received an NWFA Floor of the Year Award, and who has earned 25 credits, of which 15 are for achievement. This year’s master craftsman degree recipients are as follows: Rob Zehnder, CBA Sports Floors, Norcross, Ga. This year’s advanced master degree recipients are as follows: Reed Maddray, Maddray Flooring, Charleston, S.C., and Craig McIntosh, DuraSeal, Upper Saddle River, N.J. The ambassador degree is awarded to individuals who have received the Vanguard Degree and who have earned 25 service credits. This year’s ambassador degree recipients are as follows: Mark Elwell, Bamboo Flooring, Hawaii, LLC, Honolulu, Hawaii; Jeff Fairbanks, Palo Duro Hardwoods, Inc., Denver, Colo.; and Jon Namba, Namba Services Inc., Salt Lake City, Utah.
